The Effects of Surface Disturbances on the Leaching of Heavy Metals

    Get PDF
The harmful effects of heavy metal contamination of surface waters impacted by gold mining activity are well documented. An examination was conducted on the effects of surface disturbances in Wade Creek on the concentrations of heavy metals in solution, and whether Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, a bacteria found in heavy metal contaminated drainages from placer mines, is found in the drainage. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was not detected in this particular setting. The effects of mining activity and relandscaping of stockpiled tailings showed in a short distance, a net increase of dissolved arsenic, copper, zinc, and iron. However, the long distance impact of dissolved metals was minimal. Generally, it seems that the dampening of the total suspended solids had a direct effect on the removal of metals dissolved in solution. The research on which the report is based was financed in part by the United States Department of the Interior, Geological Survey, through grant number 14-08-0001-61313 to the Water Research Center

    Who is For Immigration?

    Get PDF
A version of this undergraduate research paper was presented at the Political Economy Conference in New York, New York, February 24-26, 2017 Immigration has been fervently debated in recent history. This research investigates what effect certain economic and non-economic variables have on individuals’ likelihood to be pro-immigration. This is extended to individuals in the United States, Great Britain, and Turkey, analyzed with separate regressions. My research uses data from the 2013 International Social Survey Programme and logit regression methods to explore the relationship, mimicking research done by Anne Maria Mayda, as reported in the 2006 paper “Who Is Against Immigration? A Cross-Country Investigation of Individual Attitudes toward Immigrants”. This research updates Mayda’s by using the most recent data available and compares only the three previously specified countries. Key results of my research show that sex and age are not significant in the United States or Great Britain, while being male and being younger influences individuals in Turkey to be more pro-immigration. Additionally, more education led to more pro-immigration sentiments in the U.S. and the U.K., though not in Turkey. Moreover, I find that individuals in different countries are impacted by different variables, with no single variable being significant for all models in all three countries. The results of this research have application for those hoping to understand or to sway public opinion on immigration

    Preparticipation Cardiovascular Screenings in Athletics

    Get PDF
Preparticipation cardiovascular screenings are a key method of injury prevention utilized in athletic training and sports medicine. Much research is available to describe the key components of a cardiovascular screening, but not much research has been conducted regarding the current clinical practices of this idealized screening model. The primary purpose of this study was to describe the current cardiovascular screening practices of clinicians in high school, collegiate, and professional athletic settings. The secondary purpose was to evaluate whether or not current cardiovascular screening practices align with the current, evidence-based recommendations regarding cardiovascular screening practices. Surveys were sent to certified athletic trainers who perform cardiovascular screenings in a variety of settings. The survey contained questions regarding demographics and specific questions about the subject’s preparticipation cardiovascular screening. The survey closed after 8 days and the 17 respondents’ responses were analyzed. Three One-Way ANOVAs were conducted. The priori alpha level was set at p \u3c 0.05. Results found significant differences between job setting and last update to the clinician’s screening (p = 0.023) and between job setting and the 14 preparticipation screening questions/tests (for 2 of the questions/tests). The 2 questions/tests that had significant differences were inquiring about shortness of breath and fatigue with exercise (p = 0.046) and requiring parental verification of past medical and family history (p = 0.009). We concluded that the current clinical practices or preparticipation cardiovascular screenings in high school, collegiate, and professional athletic settings are not completely compliant with the current, evidence-based recommendations regarding cardiovascular screening practices. Mainly this noncompliance is due to the inconsistent performance of special testing during the physical examination portion of the preparticipation cardiovascular screening. Clinically, these results indicate that clinicians need to update their preparticipation cardiovascular screening to meet the current recommendations and follow their updated screening requirements without omitting steps

Emergent literacy and second language development : a case study of six English language learners in a Structured English Immersion kindergarten

    Get PDF
This case study attempts to examine the literacy development in English of six young English language learners over the course of one academic school year. Since the passage of Proposition 227, young children who enter school with little or no English and with no first language literacy are expected to become literate in their non-native language within one to two years. The purpose of this case study is thus to examine how young English language learners develop as emergent readers and writers in English and whether these students are indeed ready for the rigors of English only programs at the conclusion of the school year

Teaching Social Construction of Reality in the Basic Course: Opening Minds and Integrating Contexts

    Get PDF
After a brief review of social construction theory (SCT), this paper explores the introduction of SCT into the hybrid basic communication course. SCT offers a theoretical perspective that can open minds and integrate the contexts of our basic course. Specifically, this article offers a) an introduction to the theory; b) application of SCT to the areas of interpersonal communication, small group communication and public communication; and c) a description of a syllabus using the hybrid basic communication course (all of the SCT projects referred to can be found in the Appendix)

Associate Faculty: Directing a Rich Resource of the Basic Course

    Get PDF
This article offers ideas for Basic Course Director (BCD) about directing associate faculty. It is important that the BCD gives serious consideration to the processes of hiring, orienting, developing and evaluating associate faculty. Associate faculty offer many opportunities and challenges to the BCD. Because they are not traditional academics, they often bring a refreshingly different perspective to the classroom and the department. They may need mentoring to develop self-confidence, hone their teaching skills and begin to think of themselves as fully contributing members of the department. Their scheduling needs require the BCD to input different factors into the decision making process

A Preliminary Inquiry into the Use and Management of 3D Virtual Anatomy Tables within Libraries

    Get PDF
This preliminary study explored the use and management practices of 3D virtual anatomy tables (VATs) currently owned by libraries to support their learning communities. This study also examined how libraries have adapted their VAT services during the COVID-19 pandemic. We sent an IRB-approved 15-question survey to members of 46 library-focused email listservs to assess the use and management practices of VATs among libraries. We analyzed the survey results within Qualtrics\u27 default report feature to perform basic calculations and generate visualizations related to the survey data. We received 31 completed surveys, with 23% of those respondents reporting that they were from libraries that owned a virtual anatomy table at any point in time. Respondents from libraries with virtual anatomy tables shared insights into how their libraries offered VAT-related services for their users, how they offered VAT services before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, details regarding their VAT cleaning practices, and what notable challenges they faced while providing VAT services before and during the pandemic. This survey will provide libraries with initial data regarding how other libraries with virtual anatomy tables provide VAT services for their library users and help inform the authors\u27 future research on this topic
