RT-SLAM: A Generic and Real-Time Visual SLAM Implementation
This article presents a new open-source C++ implementation to solve the SLAM
problem, which is focused on genericity, versatility and high execution speed.
It is based on an original object oriented architecture, that allows the
combination of numerous sensors and landmark types, and the integration of
various approaches proposed in the literature. The system capacities are
illustrated by the presentation of an inertial/vision SLAM approach, for which
several improvements over existing methods have been introduced, and that copes
with very high dynamic motions. Results with a hand-held camera are presented.Comment: 10 page
Perception system and functions for autonomous navigation in a natural environment
This paper presents the approach, algorithms, and processes we developed for the perception system of a cross-country autonomous robot. After a presentation of the tele-programming context we favor for intervention robots, we introduce an adaptive navigation approach, well suited for the characteristics of complex natural environments. This approach lead us to develop a heterogeneous perception system that manages several different terrain representatives. The perception functionalities required during navigation are listed, along with the corresponding representations we consider. The main perception processes we developed are presented. They are integrated within an on-board control architecture we developed. First results of an ambitious experiment currently underway at LAAS are then presented
Localisation par vision multi-spectrale (Application aux systèmes embarqués)
La problématique SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) est un thème largement étudié au LAAS depuis plusieurs années. L'application visée concerne le développement d'un système d'aide au roulage sur aéroport des avions de ligne, ce système devant être opérationnel quelques soient les conditions météorologiques et de luminosité (projet SART financé par la DGE en partenariat avec principalement FLIR Systems, Latécoère et Thales).Lors de conditions de visibilité difficile (faible luminosité, brouillard, pluie...), une seule caméra traditionnelle n'est pas suffisante pour assurer la fonction de localisation. Dans un premier temps, on se propose d'étudier l'apport d'une caméra infrarouge thermique.Dans un deuxième temps, on s'intéressera à l'utilisation d'une centrale inertielle et d'un GPS dans l'algorithme de SLAM, la centrale aidant à la prédiction du mouvement, et le GPS à la correction des divergences éventuelles. Enfin, on intègrera dans ce même SLAM des pseudo-observations issues de l'appariement entre des segments extraits des images, et ces mêmes segments contenus dans une cartographie stockée dans une base de données. L'ensemble des observations et pseudo-observations a pour but de localiser le porteur à un mètre près.Les algorithmes devant être portés sur un FPGA muni d'un processeur de faible puissance par rapport aux PC standard (400 MHz), un co-design devra donc être effectué entre les éléments logiques du FPGA réalisant le traitement d'images à la volée et le processeur embarquant le filtre de Kalman étendu (EKF) pour le SLAM, de manière à garantir une application temps-réel à 30 Hz. Ces algorithmes spécialement développés pour le co-design et les systèmes embarqués avioniques seront testés sur la plate-forme robotique du LAAS, puis portés sur différentes cartes de développement (Virtex 5, Raspberry, PandaBoard...) en vue de l'évaluation des performancesThe SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) problematic is widely studied from years at LAAS. The aimed application is the development of a helping rolling system for planes on airports. This system has to work under any visibility and weather conditions ("SART" project, funding by DGE, with FLIR Systems, Thalès and Latecoère).During some weather conditions (fog, rain, darkness), one only visible camera is not enough to complete this task of SLAM. Firstly, in this thesis, we will study what an infrared camera can bring to SLAM problematic, compared to a visible camera, particularly during hard visible conditions.Secondly, we will focus on using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and GPS into SLAM algorithm, IMU helping on movement prediction, and GPS helping on SLAM correction step. Finally, we will fit in this SLAM algorithm pseudo-observations coming from matching between points retrieved from images, and lines coming from map database. The main objective of the whole system is to localize the vehicle at one meter.These algorithms aimed to work on a FPGA with a low-power processor (400MHz), a co-design between the hardware (processing images on the fly) and the software (embedding an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) for the SLAM), has to be realized in order to guarantee a real-time application at 30 Hz. Induction of Endothelial Cell Apoptosis by Solid Tumor Cells
The mechanisms by which tumor cells extravasate to form metastasis remain controversial. Previous studies performed in vivo and in vitro demonstrate that the contact between tumor cells and the vascular wall impairs endothelium integrity. Here, we investigated the effect of breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells on the apoptosis of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). TUNEL labeling, nuclear morphology, and DNA electrophoresis indicated that MCF-7 cells induced a two- to fourfold increase in HUVEC apoptosis. Caspase-3 activity was significantly enhanced. Neither normal cells tested (mammary epithelial cells, fibroblasts, leukocytes) nor transformed hematopoietic cells tested (HL60, Jurkat) induced HUVEC apoptosis. On the contrary, cells derived from solid tumors (breast adenocarcinoma, MDA-MB-231 and T47D; fibrosarcoma, HT 1080) had an effect similar to that of MCF-7 cells. The induction of apoptosis requires cell-to-cell contact, since it could not be reproduced by media conditioned by MCF-7 cells cultured alone or cocultured with HUVEC. Our results suggest that cells derived from solid tumors may alter the endothelium integrity by inducing endothelial cell apoptosis. On the contrary, normal or malignant leukocytes appear to extravasate by distinct mechanisms and do not damage the endothelium. Our data may lead to a better understanding of the steps involved in tumor cell extravasation
Matrix and serine protease expression during leukemic cell differentiation induced by aclacinomycin and all-trans-retinoic acid
In myeloid leukemia, immature leukemic cells are able to egress into peripheral blood to infiltrate extra-medullary organs. We therefore analyzed the migrating and invasive potential of human HL-60 and NB4 cell lines, representative of acute myelogenous leukemia, their ability to express matrix metalloproteases (MMPs), tissue inhibitors of metalloproteases (TIMPs) and urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) in response to differentiating agents. Granulocytic differentiation by all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) and aclacinomycin (ACLA) strongly increased HL-60 and NB4 cell migration and invasion. At mRNA and protein levels, these cell lines produced significant amounts of MMP-9 (HL-60 < NB4). Granulocytic differentiation by ACLA increased both pro and active forms of MMP-9 whereas ATRA decreased them and stimulated uPA mRNAs. TIMP-1, the physiological MMP inhibitor, increased during granulocytic differentiation whereas TIMP-2 did not significantly vary. Use of Batimastat and aprotinin suggests that ATRA was active by modulating the uPA system while ACLA interfered with MMP expression. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that HL-60 and NB4 cells express MMPs and uPA which are differentially regulated by the differentiating agents ATRA and ACLA and suggest the clinical usefulness of MMPs and serine protease inhibitors in the prophylaxis and treatment of the ATRA syndrome. Down-Regulation of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor by Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-2: Effect on in Vivo Mammary Tumor Growth and Angiogenesis
The tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2) has at least two independent functions, i.e., regulation of matrix metalloproteinases and growth promoting activity. We investigated the effects of TIMP-2 overexpression, induced by retroviral mediated gene transfer, on the in vivo development of mammary tumors in syngeneic mice inoculated with EF43.fgf-4 cells. The EF43.fgf-4 cells established by stably infecting the normal mouse mammary EF43 cells with a retroviral expression vector for the fgf-4 oncogene, are highly tumorigenic and overproduce vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Despite a promotion of the in vitro growth rate of EF43.fgf-4 cells overexpressing timp-2, the in vivo tumor growth was delayed. At day 17 post-cell injection, the volume of tumor derived from TIMP-2-overexpressing cells was reduced by 80% as compared with that obtained with control cells. Overexpression of TIMP-2 was associated with a down-regulation of VEGF expression in vitro and in vivo, a reduction of vessel size, density, and blood supply in the induced tumors. In addition, TIMP-2 completely inhibited the angiogenic activity of EF43.fgf-4 cell-conditioned medium in vitro using a rat aortic ring model. Our findings suggest that overexpression of TIMP-2 delays growth and angiogenesis of mammary carcinoma in vivo and that down-regulation of VEGF expression may play an important role in this TIMP-2-mediated antitumoral and antiangiogenic effects. Finally the in vivo delivery of TIMP-2, as assessed by i.v. injection of recombinant adenoviruses vectors, significantly reduced the growth of the EF43.fgf-4-induced tumors. This effect of TIMP-2 was shown to be equally comparable with that of angiostatin, a known potent inhibitor of angiogenesis
Mouse Aortic Ring Assay: A New Approach of the Molecular Genetics of Angiogenesis
Angiogenesis, a key step in many physiological and pathological processes, involves proteolysis of the extracellular matrix. To study the role of two enzymatic families, serine-proteases and matrix metalloproteases in angiogenesis, we have adapted to the mouse, the aortic ring assay initially developed in the rat. The use of deficient mice allowed us to demonstrate that PAI-1 is essential for angiogenesis while the absence of an MMP, MMP-11, did not affect vessel sprouting. We report here that this model is attractive to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis, to identify, characterise or screen "pro- or anti-angiogenic agents that could be used for the treatment of angiogenesis-dependent diseases.
