Efficacy of Wheat Insecticide Seed Treatments on Bird Cherry-Oat Aphids

Bird Cherry-Oat Aphids, Rhopalosiphumpadi (Linnaeus), (BCOA) are a major agricultural pest for wheat due to their ability to transferBarley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV), which can stunt growth when introduced to seedlings (Wegulo, 2013). These aphids, which will remain infective throughout their lives, are capable of asexual reproduction thus populations can grow exponentially and BYDV can spread rapidly throughout a field (Whitworth & Ahmad, 2008) ”). However, seed treatments, the application of pesticides to “seeds or vegetative propagation materials,” are an effective way to defend crops from pests like BCOA during their most vulnerable life cycle stages. (Paulsrudet al, 2001). Chemical companies are always seeking to develop ever more effective treatments. This research compared the effectiveness of an experimental treatment to that of Poncho®, a proven aphid pesticide. The results showed that the BCOA populations on the plants treated with the experimental pesticide did not decline. In fact, they increased at a faster rate than the untreated control. This indicates that the experimental treatment is not suitable for the control of aphids

Research relative to angular distribution of snow reflectance/snow cover characterization and microwave emission

Remote sensing has been applied in recent years to monitoring snow cover properties for applications in hydrologic and energy balance modeling. In addition, snow cover has been recently shown to exert a considerable local influence on weather variables. Of particular importance is the potential of sensors to provide data on the physical properties of snow with high spatial and temporal resolution. Visible and near-infrared measurements of upwelling radiance can be used to infer near-surface properties through the calculation of albedo. Microwave signals usually come from deeper within the snow pack and thus provide depth-integrated information, which can be measured through clouds and does not relay on solar illumination.Fundamental studies examining the influence of snow properties on signals from various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum continue in part because of the promise of new remote sensors with higher spectral and spatial accuracy. Information in the visible and near-infrared parts of the spectrum comprise nearly all available data with high spatial resolution. Current passive microwave sensors have poor spatial resolution and the data are problematic where the scenes consist of mixed landscape features, but they offer timely observations that are independent of cloud cover and solar illumination

Policies, Procedures, and Devices Used by U.S. Hospitals for HiPAA Privacy and Security Compliance

The purpose of the study was to identify the policies and procedures required in U.S. hospitals to meet the requirements of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). A major aspect of the study focused on the degree of change required to meet the security standards and on the types of security devices used by the hospitals. Findings from a survey of 286 U.S. hospitals found the greatest amount of change needed to meet HIPAA security compliance were changes resulting in increased Information Systems (IS) budget requirements, changes to network monitoring, and additional hiring in the IS department

Efficacy of Selected Insecticide Seed Treatments on Bird Cherry-Oat Aphids in Wheat

Bird Cherry-Oat Aphids, Rhopalosiphumpadi (Linnaeus) (BCOA) are common in Kansas wheat fields and may vector Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus, causing awidevariety of problems including stunted and non-reproductive wheat (Whitworth and Ahmad, 2008). This experiment consisted of an experimental seed treatment and compared it to a control and a seed treatment already commercially available.Results showed that although the experimental treatment didn't provide control; seeds with CruiserMaxx® seed treatment were protected until 22 days after planting.The results indicate that the aphids these common seed treatments are fighting against were not as effective as previously determined
