Fluctuating brane in a dilatonic bulk
We consider a cosmological brane moving in a static five-dimensional bulk
spacetime endowed with a scalar field whose potential is exponential. After
studying various cosmological behaviours for the homogeneous background, we
investigate the fluctuations of the brane that leave spacetime unaffected. A
single mode embodies these fluctuations and obeys a wave equation which we

The new IOC and IAAF policies on female eligibility: old Emperor, new clothes?
The Caster Semenya debacle touched off by the 2009 Berlin World Athletics Championships resulted finally in IOC and IAAF abandonment of sex testing, which gave way to procedures that make female competition eligibility dependent upon the level of serum testosterone, which must be below the male range or instrumentally countered by androgen resistance. We argue that the new policy is unsustainable because (i) the testosterone-performance connection it posits is uncompelling; (ii) testosterone-induced female advantage is not ipso facto unfair advantage; (iii) the new policy reflects the gender policing impulses endemic to sport as well as the broader cultural impulses to monstrify women and to doctor women who have nothing wrong with them; (iv) femaleâmale performance disparities are not the only reason for sex-segregated sport, but co-exist with respectable cultural and practical reasons, which (v) provide a powerful case for allowing athletes to compete in the sex category congruent with their gender identity
Challenging sex segregation: A philosophical evaluation of the football associationâs rules on mixed football
The Football Association (FA) has been under pressure to allow girls to play in mixed teams since 1978, following 12-year old Theresa Bennettâs application to play with boys in a local league. In 1991, over a decade after Bennettâs legal challenge, the FA agreed to remove its ban on mixed football and introduced Rule C4 in order to permit males and females to play together in competitive matches under the age of 11. More recently, following a campaign by parents, coaches, local Members of Parliament and the Womenâs Sport Foundation, the FA agreed to trial mixed football for the under-12 to under-15 age categories in order to establish, among other things, the risk of injury to players in sex-integrated competitions. A series of exponential changes ensued: between 2010 and 2014, the age at which mixed football was permitted increased from U11 to U16. In 2015, the FA announced the decision to raise the age limit on mixed football from U16 to U18 for the forthcoming 2015â2016 season. We critically examine the reasons given by the FA for enforcing segregated participation beyond the age of 18, namely that males have an unfair advantage and that females face an unacceptable risk of injury. We also discuss the argument that removing the ban might harm the womenâs game. In conclusion, we suggest that the FA ought to abandon the ban on mixed football over the age of 18
Stable, Time-Dependent, Exact Solutions for Brane Models with a Bulk Scalar Field
We derive two classes of brane-world solutions arising in the presence of a
bulk scalar field. For static field configurations, we adopt a time-dependent,
factorizable metric ansatz that allows for radion stabilization. The solutions
are characterized by a non-trivial warping along the extra dimension, even in
the case of a vanishing bulk cosmological constant, and lead to a variety of
inflationary, time-dependent solutions of the 3D scale factor on the brane. We
also derive the constraints necessary for the stability of these solutions
under time-dependent perturbations of the radion field, and we demonstrate the
existence of phenomenologically interesting, stable solutions with a positive

Four--dimensional Gravity from Singular Spaces
The modification to four--dimensional Einstein gravity at low energy in two
brane models is investigated within supergravity in singular spaces. Using
perturbation theory around a static BPS background, we study the effective
four--dimensional gravitational theory, a scalar--tensor theory, and derive the
Brans--Dicke parameter when matter is present on the positive tension brane
only. We show there is an attractor mechanism towards general relativity in the
matter dominated era. The dynamics of the interbrane distance are discussed.
Finally, when matter lives on both branes, we find that there is a violation of
the equivalence principle whose magnitude is governed by the warping of the

Cosmological Evolution of Brane World Moduli
We study cosmological consequences of non-constant brane world moduli in five
dimensional brane world models with bulk scalars and two boundary branes. We
focus on the case where the brane tension is an exponential function of the
bulk scalar field, . In the limit , the model reduces to the two-brane model of Randall-Sundrum, whereas larger
values of allow for a less warped bulk geometry. Using the moduli
space approximation, we derive the four-dimensional low-energy effective action
from a supergravity-inspired five-dimensional theory. For arbitrary values of
, the resulting theory has the form of a bi-scalar-tensor theory. We
show that, in order to be consistent with local gravitational observations,
has to be small (less than ) and the separation of the branes
must be large. We study the cosmological evolution of the interbrane distance
and the bulk scalar field for different matter contents on each branes. Our
findings indicate that attractor solutions exist which drive the moduli fields
towards values consistent with observations. The efficiency of the attractor
mechanism crucially depends on the matter content on each branes. In the
five-dimensional description, the attractors correspond to the motion of the
negative tension brane towards a bulk singularity, which signals the eventual
breakdown of the four-dimensional description and the necessity of a better

This contribution gives an overview about various applications of (sub)mm
interferometry in star formation research. The topics covered are molecular
outflows, accretion disks, fragmentation and chemical properties of low- and
high-mass star-forming regions. A short outlook on the capabilities of ALMA is
