Laser cleaning of the output window in a laser ignition system for gas turbines
Laser ignition (LI) of both liquid fuels and gaseous combustible mixtures in gas turbines offers the potential for reduced emissions and increased reliability. During the combustion process, carbon and other by-products accumulate on the walls of the combustion chamber. For laser based ignition systems, this could potentially reduce the transmissive properties of the output window required for transmission of the laser radiation into the combustion chamber. GENERATION OF FORESTS ON TERRAIN WITH DYNAMIC LIGHTING AND SHADOWING
The purpose of this research project is to exhibit an efficient method of creating dynamic lighting and shadowing for the generation of forests on terrain. In this research project, I use textures which contain images of trees from a bird’s eye view in order to create a high scale forest. Furthermore, by manipulating the transparency and color of the textures according to the algorithmic calculations of light and shadow on terrain, I provide the functionality of dynamic lighting and shadowing. Finally, by analyzing the OpenGL pipeline, I design my code in order to allow efficient rendering of the forest

The Fixed Point Property for Posets of Small Width
The fixed point property for finite posets of width 3 and 4 is studied in
terms of forbidden retracts. The ranked forbidden retracts for width 3 and 4
are determined explicitly. The ranked forbidden retracts for the width 3 case
that are linearly indecomposable are examined to see which are minimal
automorphic. Part of a problem of Niederle from 1989 is thus solved

Dissociation and pain perception : an experimental investigation
textDissociative symptoms and abnormalities in pain perception have been associated with a range of disorders. We tested whether experimentally induced increases in state dissociation would cause an analgesic response, and whether this effect would be moderated by participants' history of trauma and dissociative experiences. Participants (n=120) were classified based on their histories of traumatic and dissociative experiences: No trauma or dissociation (NN), trauma without dissociation (TN), or trauma with dissociation (TD). All participants were randomized to a dissociation induction condition via audiophotic stimulation or a credible control condition and were compared on prepost changes in subjective pain and pain tolerance in response to a standard cold-pressor test. Unexpectedly, dissociation induction did not lead to greater pain tolerance or reduced self-reported pain. However, increases in state dissociation significantly predicted increased immersion time and decreased subjective pain.Psycholog
Chain Decomposition Theorems for Ordered Sets (and Other Musings)
A brief introduction to the theory of ordered sets and lattice theory is
given. To illustrate proof techniques in the theory of ordered sets, a
generalization of a conjecture of Daykin and Daykin, concerning the structure
of posets that can be partitioned into chains in a ``strong'' way, is proved.
The result is motivated by a conjecture of Graham's concerning probability
correlation inequalities for linear extensions of finite posets

GIS in the cloud: implementing a web map service on Google App Engine
Many producers of geographic information are now disseminating their data using open web service protocols, notably those published by the Open Geospatial Consortium. There are many challenges inherent in running robust and reliable services at reasonable cost. Cloud computing provides a new kind of scalable infrastructure that could address many of these challenges. In this study we implement a Web Map Service for raster imagery within the Google App Engine environment. We discuss the challenges of developing GIS applications within this framework and the performance characteristics of the implementation. Results show that the application scales well to multiple simultaneous users and performance will be adequate for
many applications, although concerns remain over issues such as latency spikes. We discuss the feasibility of implementing services within the free usage quotas of Google App Engine and the possibility of extending the approaches in this paper to other GIS applications
