    The volume of the Texas-Oklahoma spot cotton market analyzed by the Daily Price Estimation System (DPES) for the 2001/02 marketing year increased from 222,283 bales the previous year to 364,267 bales this year. The average price received by producers during the 2001/02 marketing year was 26.8 cents/lb, which is considerably less than the previous year. The 2001 crop was generally of good quality. The average micronaire level was higher in 2001 at 4.41, and the average number of bales having level 1 bark was up in comparison to the 2000 crop. With the exception of strength, price discounts for the 2001 crop decreased for all quality attributes, coupled with a decrease in premiums. In regard to strength, producers did not appear to receive a premium for higher levels of strength while lower levels of strength were discounted more severely than the previous year.Crop Production/Industries,

    Enhanced molybdate conversion coatings

    The replacement of chromate conversion coatings for zinc coated components has been necessitated by the materials finishing industries due to the inherent toxicity issues with Cr(VI) and the legislative enforcement of WEEE and ELV Directives by the European Union. Current replacements are based on non-chromate , Cr(III) systems, these may be perceived by some to be problematic as they still contain chromium . Molybdate based conversion coatings have long been viewed by many researchers to be a viable non-chromium alternative due to their low toxicity. An extensive literature review of the research carried out in the last 20 years was carried out, highlighting areas of interest for improving the corrosion resistance of the coatings studied. These were, primarily, the synergesis that exists with molybdate and phosphate compounds for corrosion resistance and the incorporation of nanoparticle silica into treatment solution. Also discovered was the importance of the acid used to adjust treatment solution pH, immersion time, oxidising agent additions and the incorporation of rare earth metal species. Silicate sealant layers were also highlighted as a post treatment. Molybdate-based coatings were formed on commercial electrodeposited acid zinc surfaces. Many treatment conditions were investigated, and initially performance analysed using DC Linear Polarisation Resistance (LPR) trials. Subsequently, the highest performing coatings were subjected to the more aggressive, industry standard, ASTM B 117 Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) corrosion test. The highest performing molybdate coatings were found to have an average LPR of ~ 9 000 Ω. cm2, in contrast to ~ 12 000 Ω. cm2 for the Cr(VI) based reference. NSS results were amongst the highest performing for molybdate based coatings documented, at 24 h until 5% white rust, however remained inferior to Cr(VI) coatings, which lasted 120 h. The highest performing coatings were characterised using FEG-SEM, Cryofracture EDXA and site specific AES. These techniques revealed that the enhanced molybdate coatings had a columnar structure that was around 300 nm thick, with pores that appeared to expose the substrate. AES showed this type of coating to have a mixed Mo, P and Zn oxide surface. Corrosion initiation was also studied; this can be thought of as an investigation to determine the point(s) of weakness or the mechanism that causes coating failure. Coatings were immersed in 5 % wt/ vol NaCl(aq) until they showed any surface change. Initial signs of corrosion were deemed to be any appearance of pitting or discolouration of the film, not a voluminous corrosion product. Untreated Zn, Cr(VI) and simple molybdate coatings were studied as well as enhanced molybdate coatings. There were clear differences in the way the coatings behaved at the onset of corrosion. Cr(VI) coatings delaminated, leaving an area of decreased Cr concentration. The enhanced molybdate coatings failed by the appearance of localised pores of ~ 70 µm in diameter. Substrate exposure was indisputably the reason for coating failure in chloride environments. In light of the work carried out in the present thesis the outlook for the use of molybdate as a potential replacement for chromate for the conversion coating of electrodeposited zinc surfaces is a positive one

The average price received by producers during the 2002/03 marketing year was 41.98 cents/lb, which is about 16 cents/lb. higher than the previous year. The 2002 crop was generally of good quality. The average micronaire level was slightly lower in 2002 at 4.33, and the average number of bales having level 1 bark was up in comparison to the 2002 crop. With the exception of strength and micronaire, price discounts for the 2002 crop increased for all quality attributes. Premiums remained about the same for all quality attributes with the exception of leaf. The premiums for lower levels of leaf in the 2002-03 market year showed a relative increase. In regard to strength, the first digit of the color grade, and staple length, producers did not appear to receive much of a premium for better than base qualities.Crop Production/Industries,

    A quantitative screen for metabolic enzyme structures reveals patterns of assembly across the yeast metabolic network.

    Despite the proliferation of proteins that can form filaments or phase-separated condensates, it remains unclear how this behavior is distributed over biological networks. We have found that 60 of the 440 yeast metabolic enzymes robustly form structures, including 10 that assemble within mitochondria. Additionally, the ability to assemble is enriched at branch points on several metabolic pathways. The assembly of enzymes at the first branch point in de novo purine biosynthesis is coordinated, hierarchical, and based on their position within the pathway, while the enzymes at the second branch point are recruited to RNA stress granules. Consistent with distinct classes of structures being deployed at different control points in a pathway, we find that the first enzyme in the pathway, PRPP synthetase, forms evolutionarily conserved filaments that are sequestered in the nucleus in higher eukaryotes. These findings provide a roadmap for identifying additional conserved features of metabolic regulation by condensates/filaments

    Emergency Department Pain Management Following Implementation of a Geriatric Hip Fracture Program

    Introduction: Over 300,000 patients in the United States sustain low-trauma fragility hip fractures annually. Multidisciplinary geriatric fracture programs (GFP) including early, multimodal pain management reduce morbidity and mortality. Our overall goal was to determine the effects of a GFP on the emergency department (ED) pain management of geriatric fragility hip fractures. Methods: We performed a retrospective study including patients age ≥65 years with fragility hip fractures two years before and two years after the implementation of the GFP. Outcomes were time to (any) first analgesic, use of acetaminophen and fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) in the ED, and amount of opioid medication administered in the first 24 hours. We used permutation tests to evaluate differences in ED pain management following GFP implementation. Results: We studied 131 patients in the pre-GFP period and 177 patients in the post-GFP period. In the post-GFP period, more patients received FICB (6% vs. 60%; difference 54%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 45–63%; p<0.001) and acetaminophen (10% vs. 51%; difference 41%, 95% CI 32–51%; p<0.001) in the ED. Patients in the post-GFP period also had a shorter time to first analgesic (103 vs. 93 minutes; p=0.04) and received fewer morphine equivalents in the first 24 hours (15mg vs. 10mg, p<0.001) than patients in the pre-GFP period. Conclusion: Implementation of a GFP was associated with improved ED pain management for geriatric patients with fragility hip fractures. Future studies should evaluate the effects of these changes in pain management on longer-term outcomes

    Role of Multifidelity Data in Sequential Active Learning Materials Discovery Campaigns: Case Study of Electronic Bandgap

    Materials discovery and design typically proceeds through iterative evaluation (both experimental and computational) to obtain data, generally targeting improvement of one or more properties under one or more constraints (e.g., time or budget). However, there can be great variation in the quality and cost of different data, and when they are mixed together in what we here call multifidelity data the optimal approaches to their utilization are not established. It is therefore important to develop strategies to acquire and use multifidelity data to realize the most efficient iterative materials exploration. In this work, we assess the impact of using multifidelity data through mock demonstration of designing solar cell materials, using the electronic bandgap as the target property. We propose a new approach of using multifidelity data through leveraging machine learning models of both low- and high-fidelity data, where using predicted low-fidelity data as an input feature in the high-fidelity model can improve the impact of a multifidelity data approach. We show how tradeoffs of low- versus high-fidelity measurement cost and acquisition can impact the materials discovery process, and find that the use of multifidelity data has maximal impact on the materials discovery campaign when approximately five low-fidelity measurements per high-fidelity measurement are performed, and when the cost of low-fidelity measurements is approximately 5% or less than that of high-fidelity measurements. This work provides practical guidance and useful qualitative measures for improving materials discovery campaigns that involve multifidelity data
