    Opacity of P(MMA-MAA)-PMMA Composite Latex System with Varying MAA Concentration

    Polymer composites of core-shell morphology are commonly used in the paint industry as opacity enhancer. These are usually made of block copolymer systems wherein the core is formed from a polymer that swells in the presence of a solvent and surrounded by a high glass transition polymeric shell. Thus, upon drying, the swollen regions turn into voids while leaving a hard shell. Here, composites based on poly(methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) [P(MMA-BuA)] (seed stage), poly(methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid) [P(MMA-MAA)] (second stage), and poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA] (third stage) were synthesized through a multistage sequential emulsion polymerization and their opacity was investigated. The second stage formulation of P(MMA-MAA) system was varied by changing the methyl methacrylate (MMA): methacrylic acid (MAA) mole composition, and the dried films of these composite latexes were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images and ammonium hydroxide (NH4 OH) swelling studies confirmed the successful incorporation of the seed (first) stage with the second and third stage polymerization with PMMA. The differences in PMAA concentrations among the second stage polymer compositions were determined from the IR spectra and glass transition temperature (Tg ) data. Investigations on the opacity and hiding power of these polymer composites were done using optical densitometry. The results show increasing absorbance, indicating increasing opacity, with increasing polymethacrylic acid (PMAA) concentration in the second stage composition

    Nonlinear optical properties of the substituted fullerenes C59X (X=B,N)

    Using the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the sum-over-state method, we have calculated the third-order nonlinear polarizability γ and its dispersion spectra for single substituted fullerenes C59X (X=B or N atoms). Obtained results indicate that the substitute doping increases rather heavily the γ value, both the static and the dynamical response peak values. For C59N, the highest peak value of γ (at 3ω∼0.96 eV) is found to be about 30 times larger than that for pure C60, which may be important for its practical use. © 1995 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

    Inclusive production of a pair of hadrons separated by a large interval of rapidity in proton collisions

    We consider within QCD collinear factorization the inclusive process p+p→h1+h2+Xp+p\to h_1+h_2+X, where the pair of identified hadrons, h1,h2h_1,h_2, having large transverse momenta is produced in high-energy proton-proton collisions. In particular, we concentrate on the kinematics where the two identified hadrons in the final state are separated by a large interval of rapidity Δy\Delta y. In this case the (calculable) hard part of the reaction receives large higher order corrections ∼αsnΔyn\sim \alpha^n_s \Delta y^n. We provide a theoretical input for the resummation of such contributions with next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy (NLA) in the BFKL approach. Specifically, we calculate in NLA the vertex (impact-factor) for the inclusive production of the identified hadron. This process has much in common with the widely discussed Mueller-Navelet jets production and can be also used to access the BFKL dynamics at proton colliders.     QueryForm: A Simple Zero-shot Form Entity Query Framework

    Zero-shot transfer learning for document understanding is a crucial yet under-investigated scenario to help reduce the high cost involved in annotating document entities. We present a novel query-based framework, QueryForm, that extracts entity values from form-like documents in a zero-shot fashion. QueryForm contains a dual prompting mechanism that composes both the document schema and a specific entity type into a query, which is used to prompt a Transformer model to perform a single entity extraction task. Furthermore, we propose to leverage large-scale query-entity pairs generated from form-like webpages with weak HTML annotations to pre-train QueryForm. By unifying pre-training and fine-tuning into the same query-based framework, QueryForm enables models to learn from structured documents containing various entities and layouts, leading to better generalization to target document types without the need for target-specific training data. QueryForm sets new state-of-the-art average F1 score on both the XFUND (+4.6%~10.1%) and the Payment (+3.2%~9.5%) zero-shot benchmark, with a smaller model size and no additional image input.Comment: Accepted to Findings of ACL 202

    Mice lacking NF-κB1 exhibit marked DNA damage responses and more severe gastric pathology in response to intraperitoneal tamoxifen administration

    Tamoxifen (TAM) has recently been shown to cause acute gastric atrophy and metaplasia in mice. We have previously demonstrated that the outcome of Helicobacter felis infection, which induces similar gastric lesions in mice, is altered by deletion of specific NF-κB subunits. Nfkb1-/- mice developed more severe gastric atrophy than wild-type (WT) mice 6 weeks after H. felis infection. In contrast, Nfkb2-/- mice were protected from this pathology. We therefore hypothesized that gastric lesions induced by TAM may be similarly regulated by signaling via NF-κB subunits. Groups of five female C57BL/6 (WT), Nfkb1-/-, Nfkb2-/- and c-Rel-/- mice were administered 150 mg/kg TAM by IP injection. Seventy-two hours later, gastric corpus tissues were taken for quantitative histological assessment. In addition, groups of six female WT and Nfkb1-/- mice were exposed to 12 Gy γ-irradiation. Gastric epithelial apoptosis was quantified 6 and 48 h after irradiation. TAM induced gastric epithelial lesions in all strains of mice, but this was more severe in Nfkb1-/- mice than in WT mice. Nfkb1-/- mice exhibited more severe parietal cell loss than WT mice, had increased gastric epithelial expression of Ki67 and had an exaggerated gastric epithelial DNA damage response as quantified by γH2AX. To investigate whether the difference in gastric epithelial DNA damage response of Nfkb1-/- mice was unique to TAM-induced DNA damage or a generic consequence of DNA damage, we also assessed gastric epithelial apoptosis following γ-irradiation. Six hours after γ-irradiation, gastric epithelial apoptosis was increased in the gastric corpus and antrum of Nfkb1-/- mice. NF-κB1-mediated signaling regulates the development of gastric mucosal pathology following TAM administration. This is associated with an exaggerated gastric epithelial DNA damage response. This aberrant response appears to reflect a more generic sensitization of the gastric mucosa of Nfkb1-/- mice to DNA damage

    Analytical study of non-linear transport across a semiconductor-metal junction

    In this paper we study analytically a one-dimensional model for a semiconductor-metal junction. We study the formation of Tamm states and how they evolve when the semi-infinite semiconductor and metal are coupled together. The non-linear current, as a function of the bias voltage, is studied using the non-equilibrium Green's function method and the density matrix of the interface is given. The electronic occupation of the sites defining the interface has strong non-linearities as function of the bias voltage due to strong resonances present in the Green's functions of the junction sites. The surface Green's function is computed analytically by solving a quadratic matrix equation, which does not require adding a small imaginary constant to the energy. The wave function for the surface states is given

    Template Synthesis of Three-Dimensional Cubic Ordered Mesoporous Carbon With Tunable Pore Sizes

    Three-dimensional cubic ordered mesoporous carbons with tunable pore sizes have been synthesized by using cubic Ia3d mesoporous KIT-6 silica as the hard template and boric acid as the pore expanding agent. The prepared ordered mesoporous carbons were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis. The results show that the pore sizes of the prepared ordered mesoporous carbons with three-dimensional cubic structure can be regulated in the range of 3.9–9.4 nm. A simplified model was proposed to analyze the tailored pore sizes of the prepared ordered mesoporous carbons on the basis of the structural parameters of the silica template

    Determination of acid sites in porous aluminosilicate solid catalysts for aqueous phase reactions using potentiometric titration method

    A potentiometric acid base titration method was developed to characterize the acid base properties of H-Beta-25, H-Beta-300, H-Ferrierite-20 and Si-MCM-48 zeolites in aqueous solutions. The method is based on linearization of the titration curve. The zeolite powders were dispersed in a sodium nitrate solution which was then titrated with a standard solution of sodium hydroxide. Various acid sites were found in the studied zeolites, and both the protonation constants and the concentrations of these acid sites were determined. The chemical composition (aluminum and silicon), distribution of the aluminum sites, crystallinity as well as the acidic properties of the titrated zeolites were compared with those of the pristine zeolites by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Al-27 NMR spectroscopy and the commonly used gas phase Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of pyridine adsorption method.
