You Tube if you want to – a Web 2.0 approach to staff development in web conferencing
How can we identify and make best use of potential resources in a staff development programme promoting web conferencing? What are the resources we should use? This paper regards web conferencing as a potentially powerful tool at the disposal of an institution intent on exploring new models of blended and online learning appropriate to the changing needs of 21st-century learners. It presents web conferencing in the user-centric context of Web 2.0 – the social web technologies whose educational impact is to empower online communication, collaboration, participation and sharing of resources. Based on findings from an 18-month period of evaluation and initial implementation at Leeds Met, it outlines practical staff development approaches in the related areas of user-created content and community involvement that could promote a more efficient and focused dissemination of the insights and experiences of a local, national and world-wide user group

Design for manufacture and sustainability in new product development
Design for manufacture is well recognised by industry and is about optimising design to aid production. Today there is a significant and growing trend of recognising what happens to a product once its user phase has finished. Post-consumer processes are now an important consideration during the ab-initio stages of design. Rather than a focus limited to design for manufacture or (more recently) design for assembly now the pressure is on for post consumer design. Companies need to do this because legislative pressures are increasing and consumers are becoming ever more aware of, and concerned about, environmental issues. End-of-life processing and design for the environment are therefore areas of growing of interest. This conference paper investigates with industry practitioners their experiences regarding for both the environmental and economic advantages of product life-cycle planning. Legislative pressures and consumer awareness are driving businesses to develop sustainable product design strategies (Jones et al, 2001 p. 27). Changes within the law, to protect our environment, cause companies to pay attention as they begin to affect profitability. The first British Standard to address design for end-of-life processing, and therefore support industry, is BS 8887-1. Over 60 UK manufacturing and design companies that had bought BS 8887-1 contributed to this by being interviewed or providing a written response. The research investigated multiple aspects of sustainable design in practice however, in this conference paper the focus is its application within the design process
A Lie Algebra Method for Rational Parametrization of Severi-Brauer Surfaces
It is well-known that a Severi-Brauer surface has a rational point if and
only if it is isomorphic to the projective plane. Given a Severi-Brauer
surface, we study the problem to decide whether such an isomorphism to the
projective plane, or such a rational point, does exist; and to construct such
an isomorphism or such a point in the affirmative case. We give an algorithm
using Lie algebra techniques. The algorithm has been implemented in Magma.Comment: 16 pages some minor revision
Tri-Bimaximal Neutrino Mixing, A4 and the Modular Symmetry
We formulate and discuss a 4-dimensional SUSY version of an A4 model for
tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing which is completely natural. We also study the
next-to-the-leading corrections and show that they are small, once the ratios
of A4 breaking VEVs to the cutoff are fixed in a specified interval. We also
point out an interesting way of presenting the A4 group starting from the
modular group. In this approach, which could be interesting in itself as an
indication on a possible origin of A4, the lagrangian basis where the symmetry
is formulated coincides with the basis where the charged leptons are diagonal.
If the same classification structure in A4 is extended from leptons to quarks,
the CKM matrix coincides with the unit matrix in leading order and a study of
non leading corrections shows that the departures from unity of the CKM matrix

A linear acoustic model for multi-cylinder IC engine intake manifolds including the effects of the intake throttle
This paper presents a linear acoustic model of a multi-cylinder intake manifold that can be used as part of a hybrid time/frequency domain method to calculate the intake wave dynamics of practical naturally aspirated engines.
The method allows the user to construct a model of almost any manifold of complex geometry. The model is constructed as an assemblage of sub-models:
(i) A model for a straight pipe with both ends open and through-flow.
(ii) A model for an expansion chamber consisting of three lengths of pipe laid end-to-end: a narrow bore pipe expanding into a wide bore pipe contracting into a narrower bore pipe once more.
(iii) A model of a side-branch, which includes a model for a straight pipe with one end closed and a model for the three way junction that joins the side-branch to a length of flow pipe.
(iv) A model for an expansion with two (or more) side-branches, which combines the sub-models (i, ii, iii) into a multi-way (n-way) junction model.
(v) A model for an intake throttle.
Good agreement with measurement has been found for each sub-model when bench-tested in isolation and encouraging agreement has been found when many sub-models are used together to model a complex intake manifold on a running engine
Explaining enhanced logical consistency during decision making in autism
The emotional responses elicited by the way options are framed often results in lack of logical consistency in human decision making. In this study, we investigated subjects with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using a financial task in which the monetary prospects were presented as either loss or gain. We report both behavioral evidence that ASD subjects show a reduced susceptibility to the framing effect and psycho-physiological evidence that they fail to incorporate emotional context into the decision-making process. On this basis, we suggest that this insensitivity to contextual frame, although enhancing choice consistency in ASD, may also underpin core deficits in this disorder. These data highlight both benefits and costs arising from multiple decision processes in human cognition
