    Completing the Li\'enard-Wiechert potentials: The origin of the delta function fields for a charged particle in hyperbolic motion

    Calculating the electromagnetic field of a uniformly accelerated charged particle is a surprisingly subtle problem that has been long discussed in the literature. While the correct field has been obtained many times and through various means, it remains somewhat unclear why the (supposedly general) field expression derived from the Li\'enard-Wiechert potentials misses some terms. We present new derivations of the missing field and potential terms by considering only pure hyperbolic motion, and we amend the offending step in the standard Li\'enard-Wiechert construction.Comment: 4 pages, no figure

    Activated recombinative desorption: A potential component in mechanisms of spacecraft glow

    The concept of activated recombination of atomic species on surfaces can explain the production of vibrationally and translationally excited desorbed molecular species. Equilibrium statistical mechanics predicts that the molecular quantum state distributions of desorbing molecules is a function of surface temperature only when the adsorption probability is unity and independent of initial collision conditions. In most cases, the adsorption probability is dependent upon initial conditions such as collision energy or internal quantum state distribution of impinging molecules. From detailed balance, such dynamical behavior is reflected in the internal quantum state distribution of the desorbing molecule. This concept, activated recombinative desorption, may offer a common thread in proposed mechanisms of spacecraft glow. Using molecular beam techniques and equipment available at Los Alamos, which includes a high translational energy 0-atom beam source, mass spectrometric detection of desorbed species, chemiluminescence/laser induced fluorescence detection of electronic and vibrationally excited reaction products, and Auger detection of surface adsorbed reaction products, a fundamental study of the gas surface chemistry underlying the glow process is proposed

    Domain Coarsening in Systems Far from Equilibrium

    The growth of domains of stripes evolving from random initial conditions is studied in numerical simulations of models of systems far from equilibrium such as Rayleigh-Benard convection. The scaling of the size of the domains deduced from the inverse width of the Fourier spectrum is studied for both potential and nonpotential models.     An evaluation of the C-Card Scheme in Bradford District

    NHS Bradford & Airedale Provider Services (formerly Bradford & Airedale Community Health Service) have established a district-wide C-Card (condom card) scheme to provide improved accessed to condoms and sexual health advice for young people. An existing condom distribution scheme currently distributes over 400,000 condoms per year through GP surgeries and other agencies in contact with young people. The C-Card scheme is initially being piloted over an 18 month period, alongside the existing scheme, to assess its feasibility. Prior to the C-Card pilot project a condom distribution scheme existed across the Bradford and Airedale district sexual health service. This condom distribution scheme was evaluated and, through this process, the staff involved in this scheme indicated that there needed to be a more rigorous system in place to keep track of what had taken place with young people. At the end of January 2010 funds became available to support a pilot project of the C-Card scheme, intended to eventually replace the old ‘ad hoc’ system of distributing condoms to young people

    Of all the organic food sectors in the UK, top fruit production is one of the least developed. Despite strong consumer demand and high prices for organic fruit, UK production remains small and 90% of supplies are imported. Current methods of production are unsatisfactory with low yields and erratic quality, with resulting variable economic performance. Pest and disease problems are one of the main reasons for this poor performance, with current varieties being unable to provide sufficient resistance. New varieties and an improved pest and disease management programme, identified as part of a HORTLINK project, offer new hope to the sector. There are now opportunities for the sector to grow and provide greater UK supplies of top fruit, in addition to widening the proven benefits to biodiversity of organic orchards

    Scaling laws for rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection

    Numerical simulations of large aspect ratio, three-dimensional rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection for no-slip boundary conditions have been performed in both cylinders and periodic boxes. We have focused near the threshold for the supercritical bifurcation from the conducting state to a convecting state exhibiting domain chaos. A detailed analysis of these simulations has been carried out and is compared with experimental results, as well as predictions from multiple scale perturbation theory. We find that the time scaling law agrees with the theoretical prediction, which is in contradiction to experimental results. We also have looked at the scaling of defect lengths and defect glide velocities. We find a separation of scales in defect diameters perpendicular and parallel to the rolls as expected, but the scaling laws for the two different lengths are in contradiction to theory. The defect velocity scaling law agrees with our theoretical prediction from multiple scale perturbation theory

    Lyapunov exponents for small aspect ratio Rayleigh-Bénard convection

    Leading order Lyapunov exponents and their corresponding eigenvectors have been computed numerically for small aspect ratio, three-dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection cells with no-slip boundary conditions. The parameters are the same as those used by Ahlers and Behringer [Phys. Rev. Lett. 40, 712 (1978)] and Gollub and Benson [J. Fluid Mech. 100, 449 (1980)] in their work on a periodic time dependence in Rayleigh-Benard convection cells. Our work confirms that the dynamics in these cells truly are chaotic as defined by a positive Lyapunov exponent. The time evolution of the leading order Lyapunov eigenvector in the chaotic regime will also be discussed. In addition we study the contributions to the leading order Lyapunov exponent for both time periodic and aperiodic states and find that while repeated dynamical events such as dislocation creation/annihilation and roll compression do contribute to the short time Lyapunov exponent dynamics, they do not contribute to the long time Lyapunov exponent. We find instead that nonrepeated events provide the most significant contribution to the long time leading order Lyapunov exponent

    An assessment of apple varieties for their suitability in organic production systems

    Twenty seven varieties of apple were assessed for their susceptibility to apple scab, mildew and rosy apple aphid in a replicated experiment at East Malling Research. The varieties most affected by mildew were Goldrush, DL11, Liberty, Bohemia and Pinova. Ceeval, Discovery, Edward VII, Howgate Wonder, Rajka, Rebella and Topaz had the lowest incidences of mildew. The highest incidence of scab occurred on Pilot and Pinova, but infestation was low throughout the assessment period. In 2006 when aphid populations were high, Liberty, Goldrush and Delorina had no aphid infestations, and low infestations were seen on Edward VII, Resi and Santana
