Technological Change and Innovation in Consumer Magazine Publishing: a UK-Based Study
This paper presents the results of research undertaken between 2002 and 2004 into the impact of technological change on the UK consumer magazine industry. The findings highlight patterns of innovation, both in the range of products (most notably monthly magazine titles) and the structure of organisations and work practices, which have tended to elude much of the contemporary debate within the “cultural industries” approach adopted in the media studies discipline. Instead, our analysis makes use of insights from the innovation literature to highlight the impact of technological discontinuities on the capabilities of both incumbent firms and new entrants. It also highlights the important and growing role that is being played in innovation-led industries through the adoption of organisational practices that find their origins in the traditions of project-based firms
Consumer-driven innovation networks and e-business management systems
This paper examines the use of consumer-driven innovation networks within the UK food-retailing industry using qualitative interview-based research analysed within an economic framework. This perspective revealed that, by exploiting information gathered directly from their customers at point-of-sale and data mining, supermarkets are able to identify consumer preferences and co-ordinate new product development via innovation networks. This has been made possible through their information control of the supply-chain established through the use of transparent inventory management systems. As a result, supermarkets’ e-business systems have established new competitive processes in the UK food-processing and retailing industry and are an example of consumer-driven innovation networks. The informant-based qualitative approach also revealed that trust-based transacting relationships operated differently from those previously described in the literature
New Product Development and Product Supply Within a Network Setting: The Case of the Chilled Ready-Meal Industry in the UK
This paper analyses inter-organizational networks that link together firms operating in the food processing and distribution industry in the UK. In doing so, the paper draws on insights recently developed by Mark Casson that treat inter-firm networks as an institutional response to the changing costs and opportunities of information management. Detailed analysis of product innovation and supply chain management issues within the industry, exemplified by the growth of chilled ready-meals, leads to the identification of two distinct but complementary inter-firm networks: a network of control and a network of innovation. In each case, the study finds that the critical information is derived from the retailers’ interface with consumers and thus that these information-based networks are effectively controlled by the leading supermarket chains. The study’s conclusions are considered in relation to the recent findings of the Competition Commission following its investigation into grocery retailing in the UK
Low-temperature thermochronology and thermokinematic modeling of deformation, exhumation, and development of topography in the central Southern Alps, New Zealand
Apatite and zircon (U-Th)/He and fission track ages were obtained from ridge transects across the central Southern Alps, New Zealand. Interpretation of local profiles is difficult because relationships between ages and topography or local faults are complex and the data contain large uncertainties, with poor reproducibility between sample duplicates. Data do form regional patterns, however, consistent with theoretical systematics and corroborating previous observations: young Neogene ages occur immediately southeast of the Alpine Fault (the main plate boundary structure on which rocks are exhumed); partially reset ages occur in the central Southern Alps; and older Mesozoic ages occur further toward the southeast. Zircon apparent ages are older than apatite apparent ages for the equivalent method. Three-dimensional thermokinematic modeling of plate convergence incorporates advection of the upper Pacific plate along a low-angle detachment then up an Alpine Fault ramp, adopting a generally accepted tectonic scenario for the Southern Alps. The modeling incorporates heat flow, evolving topography, and the detailed kinetics of different thermochronometric systems and explains both complex local variations and regional patterns. Inclusion of the effects of radiation damage on He diffusion in detrital apatite is shown to have dramatic effects on results. Geometric and velocity parameters are tuned to fit model ages to observed data. Best fit is achieved at 9 mm a−1 plate convergence, with Pacific plate delamination on a gentle 10°SE dipping detachment and more rapid uplift on a 45–60° dipping Alpine Fault ramp from 15 km depth. Thermokinematic modeling suggests dip-slip motion on reverse faults within the Southern Alps should be highest ∼22 km from the Alpine Fault and much lower toward the southeast
The Semantic Web as a Semantic Soup
The Semantic Web is currently best known for adding metadata to web pages to allow computers to 'understand' what they contain. This idea has been applied to people by the Friend of a Friend project which builds up a network of who people know through their descriptions placed on web pages in RDF. It is here proposed to use RDF to describe a person and to have their RDF document follow them around the Internet. The proposed technique, dubbed Semantic Cookies, will be implemented by storing a user's RDF in a cookie on their own computer through the browser. Linked Data and Spatial Data Infrastructures
Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) such as AuScope Grid and INSPIRE are being planned and built using discovery, access and processing components based on a services model. While the principle of distribution and delegation using the internet is a major step forward from traditional data warehouses and private collections, the query-oriented interaction paradigm is merely evolutionary, compared with traditional access systems designed for expert users.
In contrast, the success and scalability of the world wide web has been based on hypertext, in which browsing is the key mode of interaction, supported by Universal Resource Identifiers (URIs). Linked Data has been proposed as the bridge from the browseable web to the deep web of technical data. Linked Data is still based on web-pages (usually HTML) for user interactions, but supported by Resource Description Framework (RDF) for richer link semantics. Links can resolve to datasets in legacy file formats which thus serve as leaf-nodes, but can also be part of the web of resources.
Key standards used in SDI were designed on Linked Data principles, even before the name was coined. For instance, Geography Markup Language (GML) is essentially an RDF/XML application. Thus, in principle, SDIs should integrate seamlessly into the web of linked data. There are, however, a number of issues to consider or resolve in order to bring this about. These include: the definition of 'resource' in the context of databases that are accessed as projected subsets by query, accessed through web-service interfaces; multiple representations of the same feature from different services to support different applications; semantics embedded in structured representations expressed in non-RDF XML forms; standard vocabulary and identifier services.JRC.H.6-Digital Earth and Reference Dat
