Research has indicated that CALL is effective for language learning, that it caters for individual learning needs and that it promotes independent learning. By providing structured learning, students can study in their own time without a teacher. Whilst it is now commonly accepted that CALL material must be carefully integrated into the curriculum for it to be effective, there is a move in CALL research away from just evaluation of software to a greater focus on the learner. It is maintained that understanding different learning styles and learner preferences is essential in the creation of CALL packages, and that packages are sufficiently flexible to cater for learners of different ability to manage their own learning. However, while an attraction of CALL is that it fosters independent learning, it is not clear what learners do when they are in the process of becoming independent learners, what CALL environments will foster the development of independent learning skills, and the type of learner who will benefit. This thesis examines the in-house development and trialling of kanji software at the Auckland University of Technology, taking into account the direction of current research into CALL. It provides an initial evaluation of the software design and use, within the framework of research into second language acquisition, learner differences and independent learning. Findings from this initial study will be used to modify the software where necessary and to provide the basis for further research into CALL and language learning

    Residential property auction prices

Large movements in house prices over the past three years have re-emphasised the challenge of analysing their movements. This article presents data on properties sold at auction that may offer insights into short-term dynamics in the housing market.

NGC7538 IRS1 - an ionized jet powered by accretion

Analysis of high spatial resolution VLA images shows that the free-free emission from NGC7538 IRS1 is dominated by a collimated ionized wind. We have re-analyzed high angular resolution VLA archive data from 6 cm to 7 mm, and measured separately the flux density from the compact bipolar core and the extended (1.5" - 3") lobes. We find that the flux density of the core is proportional to the frequency to the power of alpha, with alpha being about 0.7. The frequency dependence of the total flux density is slightly steeper with alpha = 0.8. A massive optically thick hypercompact core with a steep density gradient can explain this frequency dependence, but it cannot explain the extremely broad recombination line velocities observed in this source. Neither can it explain why the core is bipolar rather than spherical, nor the observed decrease of 4% in the flux density in less than 10 years. An ionized wind modulated by accretion is expected to vary, because the accretion flow from the surrounding cloud will vary over time. BIMA and CARMA continuum observations at 3 mm show that the free-free emission still dominates at 3 mm. HCO+ J = 1 - 0 observations combined with FCRAO single dish data show a clear inverse P Cygni profile towards IRS1. These observations confirm that IRS1 is heavily accreting with an accretion rate of about 2 times 10(-4) solar masses per year.Comment: Accepted for Astrophysical Journal Letter

Observations of a high-mass protostar in NGC 7538S

We present high angular resolution continuum observations of the high-mass protostar NGC 7538S with BIMA and CARMA at 3 and 1.4 mm, VLA observations at 1.3, 2, 3.5 and 6 cm, and archive IRAC observations from the Spitzer Space Observatory, which detect the star at 4.5, 5.8, and 8 μ\mum. The star looks rather unremarkable in the mid-IR. The excellent positional agreement of the IRAC source with the VLA free-free emission, the OH, CH3_3OH, H2_2O masers, and the dust continuum confirms that this is the most luminous object in the NGC 7538S core. The continuum emission at millimeter wavelengths is dominated by dust emission from the dense cold cloud core surrounding the protostar. Including all array configurations, the emission is dominated by an elliptical source with a size of ~ 8" x 3". If we filter out the extended emission we find three compact mm-sources inside the elliptical core. The strongest one, SAS_A, coincides with the VLA/IRAC source and resolves into a double source at 1.4 mm, where we have sub-arcsecond resolution. The measured spectral index, α\alpha, between 3 and 1.4 mm is ~ 2.3, and steeper at longer wavelengths, suggesting a low dust emissivity or that the dust is optically thick. We argue that the dust in these accretion disks is optically thick and estimate a mass of an accretion disk or infalling envelope surrounding SA_A to be ~ 60 solar masses.Comment: ApJ Accepted 2012, 13 pages, 9 figure

    A century worth celebrating

It is understandable that no great fuss has been made of the hundredth anniversary of the establishment of South Africa as a nation state within its current borders (through the South Africa Act 9 Edw VII, ch 9). The Act of Union, after all, while it represented a triumph for those arguing for the formal reconciliation of ‘Boer and Brit’, marked much more negatively the exclusion of the majority of the new country’s population from any effective say in the institutions of government. Not only were the proponents of federalism, which might have allowed the less conservative leadership in the Cape Colony to retain a degree of autonomy through which to pursue government based on individual worth, soundly defeated, but the elements of non-racial government preserved in the Cape franchise arrangements (and to a lesser extent, those of Natal) were seen as provisions to be protected as a dying species, rather than as bridgeheads for their expansion more widely within the Unio

Getting the picture : iconicity does not affect representation-referent confusion

    Get PDF
Three experiments examined 3- to 5-year-olds' (N = 428) understanding of the relationship between pictorial iconicity (photograph, colored drawing, schematic drawing) and the real world referent. Experiments 1 and 2 explored pictorial iconicity in picture-referent confusion after the picture-object relationship has been established. Pictorial iconicity had no effect on referential confusion when the referent changed after the picture had been taken/drawn (Experiment 1) and when the referent and the picture were different from the outset (Experiment 2). Experiment 3 investigated whether children are sensitive to iconicity to begin with. Children deemed photographs from a choice of varying iconicity representations as best representations for object reference. Together, findings suggest that iconicity plays a role in establishing a picture-object relation per se but is irrelevant once children have accepted that a picture represents an object. The latter finding may reflect domain general representational abilities
