Solving simultaneously Dirac and Ricatti equations
We analyse the behaviour of the Dirac equation in with Lorentz scalar
potential. As the system is known to provide a physical realization of
supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we take advantage of the factorization method
in order to enlarge the restricted class of solvable problems. To be precise,
it suffices to integrate a Ricatti equation to construct one-parameter families
of solvable potentials. To illustrate the procedure in a simple but relevant
context, we resort to a model which has proved useful in showing the phenomenon
of fermion number fractionalization
New Spirometry Indices for Detecting Mild Airflow Obstruction.
The diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) relies on demonstration of airflow obstruction. Traditional spirometric indices miss a number of subjects with respiratory symptoms or structural lung disease on imaging. We hypothesized that utilizing all data points on the expiratory spirometry curves to assess their shape will improve detection of mild airflow obstruction and structural lung disease. We analyzed spirometry data of 8307 participants enrolled in the COPDGene study, and derived metrics of airflow obstruction based on the shape on the volume-time (Parameter D), and flow-volume curves (Transition Point and Transition Distance). We tested associations of these parameters with CT measures of lung disease, respiratory morbidity, and mortality using regression analyses. There were significant correlations between FEV1/FVC with Parameter D (r = -0.83; p < 0.001), Transition Point (r = 0.69; p < 0.001), and Transition Distance (r = 0.50; p < 0.001). All metrics had significant associations with emphysema, small airway disease, dyspnea, and respiratory-quality of life (p < 0.001). The highest quartile for Parameter D was independently associated with all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 3.22,95% CI 2.42-4.27; p < 0.001) but a substantial number of participants in the highest quartile were categorized as GOLD 0 and 1 by traditional criteria (1.8% and 33.7%). Parameter D identified an additional 9.5% of participants with mild or non-recognized disease as abnormal with greater burden of structural lung disease compared with controls. The data points on the flow-volume and volume-time curves can be used to derive indices of airflow obstruction that identify additional subjects with disease who are deemed to be normal by traditional criteria
First observation of Li ground state
The ground state of neutron-rich unbound Li was observed for the first
time in a one-proton removal reaction from Be at a beam energy of 53.6
MeV/u. The Li ground state was reconstructed from Li and two
neutrons giving a resonance energy of 120 keV. All events
involving single and double neutron interactions in the Modular Neutron Array
(MoNA) were analyzed, simulated, and fitted self-consistently. The three-body
(Li+) correlations within Jacobi coordinates showed strong
dineutron characteristics. The decay energy spectrum of the intermediate
Li system (Li+) was described with an s-wave scattering length
of greater than -4 fm, which is a smaller absolute value than reported in a

The CRESST Experiment: Recent Results and Prospects
The CRESST experiment seeks hypothetical WIMP particles that could account
for the bulk of dark matter in the Universe. The detectors are cryogenic
calorimeters in which WIMPs would scatter elastically on nuclei, releasing
phonons. The first phase of the experiment has successfully deployed several
262 g sapphire devices in the Gran Sasso underground laboratories. A main
source of background has been identified as microscopic mechanical fracturing
of the crystals, and has been eliminated, improving the background rate by up
to three orders of magnitude at low energies, leaving a rate close to one count
per day per kg and per keV above 10 keV recoil energy. This background now
appears to be dominated by radioactivity, and future CRESST scintillating
calorimeters which simultaneously measure light and phonons will allow

In crystallo-screening for discovery of human norovirus 3C-like protease inhibitors.
Outbreaks of human epidemic nonbacterial gastroenteritis are mainly caused by noroviruses. Viral replication requires a 3C-like cysteine protease (3CLpro) which processes the 200 kDa viral polyprotein into six functional proteins. The 3CLpro has attracted much interest due to its potential as a target for antiviral drugs. A system for growing high-quality crystals of native Southampton norovirus 3CLpro (SV3CP) has been established, allowing the ligand-free crystal structure to be determined to 1.3 Å in a tetrameric state. This also allowed crystal-based fragment screening to be performed with various compound libraries, ultimately to guide drug discovery for SV3CP. A total of 19 fragments were found to bind to the protease out of the 844 which were screened. Two of the hits were located at the active site of SV3CP and showed good inhibitory activity in kinetic assays. Another 5 were found at the enzyme's putative RNA-binding site and a further 11 were located in the symmetric central cavity of the tetramer
Bessel Process and Conformal Quantum Mechanics
Different aspects of the connection between the Bessel process and the
conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) are discussed. The meaning of the possible
generalizations of both models is investigated with respect to the other model,
including self adjoint extension of the CQM. Some other generalizations such as
the Bessel process in the wide sense and radial Ornstein- Uhlenbeck process are

tests to probe the supersymmetry classification, in particular, correlations

Improved measurement of the K+->pi+nu(nu)over-bar branching ratio
An additional event near the upper kinematic limit for K+-->pi(+)nu(nu) over bar has been observed by experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Combining previously reported and new data, the branching ratio is B(K+-->pi(+)nu(nu) over bar)=(1.47(-0.89)(+1.30))x10(-10) based on three events observed in the pion momentum region 211<P<229 MeV/c. At the measured central value of the branching ratio, the additional event had a signal-to-background ratio of 0.9
