Changes in glass consumption in Pergamon (Turkey) from Hellenistic to late Byzantine and Islamic times
We present compositional data for nearly 100 glass samples from Pergamon, western Turkey, spanning 1500 years from the Hellenistic to Late Byzantine and Islamic periods. The data shows the use of already-known Roman glass groups during the first half of the time frame, for imported vessels as well as locally worked glass. No compositional change is seen related to the introduction of glass blowing for either of the glass groups in use during this time. During the first half of the 1st millennium AD, two previously little-known boron- and alumina-rich compositional groups emerge. These glass groups, thought to be regionally produced, dominate glass compositions in Pergamon during the mid-to late Byzantine and Islamic periods, indicating a major shift in glass supply and a fragmentation of the economy into more regional units. Plant-ash glass, from the 9th century AD replacing mineral natron glass in the Levant, plays only a minor role in Byzantine and Islamic Pergamon
Computer program for analysis of coupled-cavity traveling wave tubes
A flexible, accurate, large signal computer program was developed for the design of coupled cavity traveling wave tubes. The program is written in FORTRAN IV for an IBM 360/67 time sharing system. The beam is described by a disk model and the slow wave structure by a sequence of cavities, or cells. The computational approach is arranged so that each cavity may have geometrical or electrical parameters different from those of its neighbors. This allows the program user to simulate a tube of almost arbitrary complexity. Input and output couplers, severs, complicated velocity tapers, and other features peculiar to one or a few cavities may be modeled by a correct choice of input data. The beam-wave interaction is handled by an approach in which the radio frequency fields are expanded in solutions to the transverse magnetic wave equation. All significant space harmonics are retained. The program was used to perform a design study of the traveling-wave tube developed for the Communications Technology Satellite. Good agreement was obtained between the predictions of the program and the measured performance of the flight tube
Long Term Wind-Driven X-Ray Spectral Variability of NGC 1365 with Swift
We present long-term (months-years) X-ray spectral variability of the Seyfert
1.8 galaxy NGC 1365 as observed by Swift, which provides well sampled
observations over a much longer timescale (6 years) and a much larger flux
range than is afforded by other observatories. At very low luminosities the
spectrum is very soft, becoming rapidly harder as the luminosity increases and
then, above a particular luminosity, softening again. At a given flux level,
the scatter in hardness ratio is not very large, meaning that the spectral
shape is largely determined by the luminosity. The spectra were therefore
summed in luminosity bins and fitted with a variety of models. The best fitting
model consists of two power laws, one unabsorbed and another, more luminous,
which is absorbed. In this model, we find a range of intrinsic 0.5-10.0 keV
luminosities of approximately 1.1-3.5 ergs/s, and a very large range of
absorbing columns, of approximately 10^22 - 10^24 cm^-2. Interestingly, we find
that the absorbing column decreases with increasing luminosity, but that this
result is not due to changes in ionisation. We suggest that these observations
might be interpreted in terms of a wind model in which the launch radius varies
as a function of ionising flux and disc temperature and therefore moves out
with increasing accretion rate, i.e. increasing X-ray luminosity. Thus,
depending on the inclination angle of the disc relative to the observer, the
absorbing column may decrease as the accretion rate goes up. The weaker,

Evidence on the Economics of Equity Return Volatility Clustering
The underlying economic sources of volatility clustering in asset returns remain a puzzle in financial economics. Using daily equity returns, we study variation in the volatility relation between the conditional variance of individual firm returns and yesterday's market return shock. We find a number of regularities in this market-to-firm volatility relation. (1) It decreases following macroeconomic news announcements; (2) it does not change systematically during the high-news months when firms announce quarterly earnings; and (3) it increases substantially with our measures of dispersion-in-beliefs across traders about the market's common-factor signal. Our evidence suggests that volatility-clustering is a natural result of a price formation process with heterogeneous beliefs across traders, and that volatility clustering is not attributable to an autocorrelated news-generation process around public information such as macroeconomic news releases or firms' earnings releases. We find consistent results in our sample of large-capitalization firms in Japan and the U.K., which suggests a generality of our results and bolsters our economic interpretation.
Long-Term X-ray Spectral Variability of Seyfert Galaxies with Swift
We present analysis of the long-term X-ray spectral variability of Seyfert
galaxies as observed by Swift, which provides well-sampled observations over a
much larger flux range and a much longer timescale than any other X-ray
observatory. We examine long-term variability of three AGN: NGC 1365 (see
Connolly et al. 2014), Mkn 335 and NGC 5548. At high fluxes, the 0.5-10 keV
spectra soften with increasing flux, as seen previously within the 2-10 keV
band. However, at very low fluxes the sources also become very soft. We have
fitted a number of models to the data and find that both intrinsic luminosity
variability and variable absorption are required to explain the observations.
In some systems, e.g. NGC 1365, the best explanation is a two-component wind
model in which one component represents direct emission absorbed by a disc wind
wind, with the absorbing column inversely proportional to the intrinsic
luminosity, and the second component represents unabsorbed emission reflected

Nitrous Oxide Emissions
End of project reportNitrous oxide (N2O) is one of the three most important greenhouse gases (GHG). Nitrous oxide emissions currently account for approximately one third of GHG emissions from agriculture in Ireland. Emissions of N2O arise naturally from soil sources and from the application of nitrogen (N) in the form of N fertilizers and N in dung and urine deposition by grazing animals at pasture.
Nitrous oxide emission measurements were conducted at three different scales. Firstly, a large-scale field experiment was undertaken to compare emission rates from a pasture receiving three different rates of N fertilizer application and to identify the effects of controlling variables over a two-year period. Variation in emission rates was large both within and between years.
Two contrasting climatic years were identified. The cooler and wetter conditions in year 1 gave rise to considerably lower emission levels than the warmer and drier year 2. However, in both years, peak emissions were associated with fertilizer N applications coincident with rainfall events in the summer months.
A small-plot study was conducted to identify the individual and combined effects of fertilizer, dung and urine applications to grassland. Treatment effects were however, difficult to obtain due to the overriding effects of environmental variables.
Thirdly, through the use of a small-scale mini-lysimeter study, the diurnal nature of N2O emission rates was identified for two distinct periods during the year. The occurrence of a diurnal pattern has important implications for the identification of a measurement period during the day which is representative of the true daily flux.
The research presented aims to identify the nature and magnitude of N2O emissions and the factors which affect emission rates from a grassland in Ireland. Further work is required to integrate the effects of different soil types and contrasting climatic regimes across soil types on N2O emissions.Environmental Protection Agenc
Monitoring of nitrogen leaching on a dairy farm during four drainage seasons
peer-reviewedThe authors acknowledge funding from the Environmental Protection Agency and Teagasc under the 2000–2006 RTDI programme.The effect of four commonly used dairy farm management systems (treatments), on nitrogen leaching to 1 m was studied over a 4-year period from October 2001 to April 2005. The treatments were (i) grazed plots receiving dirty water, (ii) 2-cut silage plots receiving slurry, (iii) grazed plots and (iv) 1-cut silage plots receiving slurry. All plots had fertiliser N applied; the soil was free-draining overlying fissured limestone. Mean 4-year N input (kg/ha) was 319 and mean annual stocking density was ~2.38 LU/ha. The annual average and weekly NO3-N and NH4-N concentrations in drainage water were analysed for all years, using a repeated measures analysis. For the annual NO3-N data, there was an interaction between treatment and year (P < 0.001). There were significant differences (P < 0.05) in NO3-N concentrations between the treatments in all years except the third. For the NH4-N data there was no interaction between treatment and year or main effect of treatment but there were differences between years (P < 0.01). Mean weekly concentrations were analysed separately for each year. For NO3-N, in all years but the third, there was an interaction between treatment and week (P < 0.001); this occurred with NH4-N, in all 4 years. Dirty water was significantly higher than grazed-fertiliser only and 1-cut silage in NO3-N concentrations in 2001–02; in 2002–03, dirty water and 2-cut silage were significantly higher than the other treatments; while in 2004–05, dirty water and grazed-fertiliser only were significantly higher than the other two treatments. The overall 4-year mean NO3-N and NH4-N concentrations were 8.2 and 0.297 mg/L, respectively.Environmental Protection Agenc
