    Using Public Schools as Community-Development Tools: Strategies for Community-Based Developers

    This paper explores the use of public schools as tools for community and economic development. As major place-based infrastructure and an integral part of the community fabric, public schools can have a profound impact on the social, economic and physical character of a neighborhood. Addressing public schools, therefore, is a good point of entry for community-based developers to place their work in a comprehensive community-development context. The paper examines ways in which community-based developers can learn from, as well as contribute to, current community-based efforts, particularly in disinvested urban areas, to reinforce the link between public schools and neighborhoods. Furthermore, the paper considers the policy implications of including public schools in comprehensive development strategies, and argues that reinforcing the link between public schools and neighborhoods is not only good education policy, but also good community-development policy and practice

    Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans: Surgical excision versus Mohs surgery

    The purpose of this project was to compare the recurrence rates of dermatofibrsarcoma protuberans (DFSP) treated with surgical excision (SE) and Mohs surgery (MS) at Yale. Patients were identified through the dermatopathology laboratory database and stratified by treatment. The following information was collected: age at onset, sex, disease state (primary presentation versus recurrence), tumor site, preoperative tumor size, postoperative defect size, excisional margin, duration of follow-up, and recurrence after treatment. Of the 30 patients, 14 were in the SE group, and 16 were in the MS group. There were no recurrences in the SE group, and there was 1 recurrence (6%) in the MS group, which occurred 37 months post-operatively. The average area of the tumors were 12.1 cm2 ± 16.1 (SE) and 5.3 cm2 ± 5.9 (MS), and the mean excisional margins were 3.8 cm ± 1.6 (SE) and 1.4 cm± 0.5 (MS). The mean duration of follow-up in the SE group was 33 months ± 41 (range: 1-116 months), and the mean duration of follow-up in the MS group was 26 months ± 25 (range: 2 to 69 months.) Although the MS group had a higher recurrence rate than the SE group, using the recurrence rates to make meaningful conclusions about the efficacy of the two treatment modalities is limited by the small n, lack of randomization to either procedure, and duration of follow-up. Once these issues are addressed, recurrence rates must also be adjusted for patient and tumor characteristics, that are associated with higher recurrence rates

By applying the lessons of 20th-century industrial complexes, or "technopoles," to a new conception of production in the 21st century, city builders, planners, and business developers tackle the new role of fitting the commercial creative sector into Castells's 'networks' and this creative city discourse, in order to generate innovation in the creative city. The thesis aims to closely examine the role that for-profit creative production now plays in the 21st century urban economic engine and the ways in which synergy may be created by and among many individual creative firms in the city. The thesis uses the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City, as a case and example of how to go about supporting new kinds of urban creative clusters. The thesis proposes principles, guidelines, and an approach to cluster development, not as a universal solution for currently uncoordinated clustering, but as a place-based example for applying the principles of this thesis. I will review the evolution of 21st-century production and the emergence of the creative economy, including the case for locating creative production centers in metropolitan locales, in order to illustrate the shape of the new production landscape in the creative city.(cont.) I next present a framework for organizing and developing a 21st-century creative cluster, and outline fourteen key ingredients to their development. Finally, I apply this framework to a creative-cluster development strategy in Brooklyn, identifying three possible areas of intervention where creative firms already operate, and propose a public-private management entity structure to provide the necessary synergistic 'glue.'by Connie Jean Chung.M.C.P

    Proximate Composition of Larvae, Prepupae and Adult in Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens)

    The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens L.) is an insect species and able to convert low-value substrates is highly nutrient feed. Most of the aquaculture industry uses fish meal as a protein source in the diet of fish however fish meal was high in demand, price, and limited hence as an alternative the supplement protein should possess certain content to meet the role of fish meal in aquafeed products. Besides, a lack of research and studies on using BSF as a substitute in fish feed was noticed. This project aims to analyze the proximate composition in larvae, prepupae and adults were freeze-dried at -20°C, ground, and analyzed for proximate composition such as crude protein, crude lipid, ash, crude fiber, and moisture. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA to identify the significant difference in proximate composition in the three stages of BSF which are larvae, prepupae, and adult. As a result, the proximate composition revealed that BSF larvae possessed 32.3% crude protein, 26.7% crude lipid, 9.0% ash, 10.1% crude fiber, and 6.9% moisture while BSF prepupae contain 27.0% crude protein, 4.2% crude lipid, 10.6% ash, 8.6% crude fiber and 37.4% moisture also BSF adult have 52.6% crude protein, 15.6% crude lipid, 7.5% ash, 13.2% crude fiber and 25.6% moisture. BSF adult shows the highest crude protein content thus data was able to contribute more information on the nutritional value that potentially can be replaced in the diet of fish feed

    Efficacy of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) Larvae Meal as Feed on Growth Performance for Juvenile Javan Mahseer (Tor tambra)

    Fish meal (FM) is a well known protein source for fish feed and its heavy utilization has contributed to overfishing that lead to increase price of formulated feed due to scarcity of fish resources for fish meal. Several studies were done to identify the best substitution of FM including Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae as a potential candidate for FM replacement. This study was done to investigate the proximate composition of Black Soldier Fly Larvae Meal (BSFLM) and to determine its efficacy as feed on growth performance of Javan Mahseer (Tor tambra). Three types of treatment were used namely F0 or control (0% BSFLM and 100% FM), F50 (50% BSFLM and 50% FM) and F100 (100% BSFLM and 0% FM). Each treatment was fed twice daily for 20 days to 10 Javan Mahseer with the average initial weight of 0.1g respectively. Analyses conducted was proximate composition and growth performance like specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, survival rate and body weight gain. Data was analysed using One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) SPSS Windows 27. Results show that crude protein in F0, F50 and F100 were 37.52%, 30.36% and 27.52%; while F50 indicated best BWG (66.71%) and lowest FCR (3.16) respectively. It can be concluded that treatment 50% inclusion of BSF is the best ratio for good growth performances of Javan Mahseer

    A functional Notch–survivin gene signature in basal breast cancer

    INTRODUCTION: Basal-type, or triple-negative, breast cancer (lacking estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 expression) is a high-risk disease for which no molecular therapies are currently available. We studied genetic signatures of basal breast cancer potentially suitable for therapeutic intervention. METHODS: We analyzed protein expression of the Notch-1 intracellular domain and survivin by immunohistochemistry in a series of basal breast cancer patients. A hierarchical clustering and overall survival analysis was carried out on a microarray mRNA database of 232 breast cancer patients. Fifteen published mRNA datasets containing estrogen receptor-negative or estrogen receptor-positive samples were subjected to meta-analysis for co-segregated gene expression. Experiments of plasmid transfection and gene silencing were carried out in estrogen receptor-negative MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. RESULTS: The developmental signaling regulator Notch-1 was highly expressed in breast cancer, compared with normal tissue, and was segregated with basal disease. Higher Notch-1 levels correlated with progressively abbreviated overall survival, and with increased expression of survivin, a tumor-associated cell death and mitotic regulator implicated in stem cell viability. Analysis of Pearson\u27s correlation coefficient indicated that Notch-1 and survivin co-segregated in basal breast cancer. Notch-1 stimulation in MDA-MB-231 cells increased survivin expression, whereas silencing Notch reduced survivin levels. CONCLUSIONS: A Notch-1-survivin functional gene signature is a hallmark of basal breast cancer, and may contribute to disease pathogenesis. Antagonists of Notch and survivin currently in the clinic may be tested as novel molecular therapy for these recurrence-prone patients
