Aeolian activity in a Urewera catchment
Analyses of sedimentary deposits on the Otapora flat and adjacent flood plain areas of Whakatane River demonstrate that aeolian activity is important even in a humid (BB'r) forested Catchment. The importance of relief and wind conditions are shown. A tentative assessment of potential feral pest damage and increased sheetwash from a forested Urewera catchment is advanced
Benthic habitat mapping in the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary: Classification of side scan sonar data from survey HMPR-108-2002-01: Version I
In September 2002, side scan sonar was used to image a portion of the sea floor in the northern OCNMS and was mosaiced at 1-meter pixel resolution using 100 kHz data
collected at 300-meter range scale. Video from a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV), bathymetry data, sedimentary samples, and sonar mapping have been integrated to
describe geological and biological aspects of habitat and polygon features have been created and attributed with a hierarchical deep-water marine benthic classification
scheme (Greene et al. 1999). The data can be used with geographic information system (GIS) software for display, query, and analysis. Textural analysis of the sonar images
provided a relatively automated method for delineating substrate into three broad classes representing soft, mixed sediment, and hard bottom. Microhabitat and presence of
certain biologic attributes were also populated into the polygon features, but strictly limited to areas where video groundtruthing occurred. Further groundtruthing work in
specific areas would improve confidence in the classified habitat map. (PDF contains 22 pages.
Conditional two mode squeezed vacuum teleportation
We show, by making conditional measurements on the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen
(EPR) squeezed vacuum, that one can improve the efficacy of teleportation for
both the position difference, momentum sum and number difference, phase sum
continuous variable teleportation protocols. We investigate the relative
abilities of the standard and conditional EPR states, and show that by
conditioning we can improve the fidelity of teleportation of coherent states

Teleportation using coupled oscillator states
We analyse the fidelity of teleportation protocols, as a function of resource
entanglement, for three kinds of two mode oscillator states: states with fixed
total photon number, number states entangled at a beam splitter, and the
two-mode squeezed vacuum state. We define corresponding teleportation protocols
for each case including phase noise to model degraded entanglement of each

Design Theory and the Australian Tula Adze
The tula adze is a distinctive composite tool that was used in the Australian arid zone during the late Holocene. In this paper we use design theory to investigate why this particular tool form was so pervasive across time and space. Design theory provides a rational means for classifying tool designs and for determining why particular tool design classes were employed over others. We draw upon ethnographic and archaeological evidence to characterize the design of the tula adze and conclude that it is consistently the product of a “reliable” design strategy. We further determine that the high cost of a reliable design was chosen because the tula adze was employed in situations where failure could not be tolerated. Specifically, we argue that an important role of the tula adze was to manufacture wooden goods for not only personal use but more significantly for trade. The quantity and quality of these goods had an extremely strong bearing on the economic sustainability of arid zone Aboriginal groups
