Participation And performance In 8.02x Electricity And Magnetism: The First Physics MOOC From MITx
Massive Open Online Courses are an exciting new avenue for instruction and
research, yet they are full of unknowns. In the Spring of 2013, MITx released
its first introductory physics MOOC through the edX platform, generating a
total enrollment of 43,000 students from around the world. We describe the
population of participants in terms of their age, gender, level of education,
and country of origin, highlighting both the diversity of 8.02x enrollees as
well as gender gap and retention. Using three midterm exams and the final as
waypoints, we highlight performance by different demographic subpopulations and
their retention rates. Our work is generally aimed at making a bridge between
available MOOC data and topics associated with the Physics Education Research

Therapeutic Effect of Targeting Branched-Chain Amino Acid Catabolic Flux in Pressure-Overload Induced Heart Failure.
Background Branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolic defect is an emerging metabolic hallmark in failing hearts in human and animal models. The therapeutic impact of targeting BCAA catabolic flux under pathological conditions remains understudied. Methods and Results BT2 (3,6-dichlorobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid), a small-molecule inhibitor of branched-chain ketoacid dehydrogenase kinase, was used to enhance BCAA catabolism. After 2Â weeks of transaortic constriction, mice with significant cardiac dysfunctions were treated with vehicle or BT2. Serial echocardiograms showed continuing pathological deterioration in left ventricle of the vehicle-treated mice, whereas the BT2-treated mice showed significantly preserved cardiac function and structure. Moreover, BT2 treatment improved systolic contractility and diastolic mechanics. These therapeutic benefits appeared to be independent of impacts on left ventricle hypertrophy but associated with increased gene expression involved in fatty acid utilization. The BT2 administration showed no signs of apparent toxicity. Conclusions Our data provide the first proof-of-concept evidence for the therapeutic efficacy of restoring BCAA catabolic flux in hearts with preexisting dysfunctions. An Expanded Conformation of Single-Ring GroEL-GroES Complex Encapsulates an 86 kDa Substrate
SummaryElectron cryomicroscopy reveals an unprecedented conformation of the single-ring mutant of GroEL (SR398) bound to GroES in the presence of Mg-ATP. This conformation exhibits a considerable expansion of the folding cavity, with ∼80% more volume than the X-ray structure of the equivalent cis cavity in the GroEL-GroES-(ADP)7 complex. This expanded conformation can encapsulate an 86 kDa heterodimeric (αβ) assembly intermediate of mitochondrial branched-chain α-ketoacid dehydrogenase, the largest substrate ever observed to be cis encapsulated. The SR398-GroES-Mg-ATP complex is found to exist as a mixture of standard and expanded conformations, regardless of the absence or presence of the substrate. However, the presence of even a small substrate causes a pronounced bias toward the expanded conformation. Encapsulation of the large assembly intermediate is supported by a series of electron cryomicroscopy studies as well as the protection of both α and β subunits of the substrate from tryptic digestion
Evidence for Duality of Conifold from Fundamental String
We study the spectrum of BPS D5-D3-F1 states in type IIB theory, which are
proposed to be dual to D4-D2-D0 states on the resolved conifold in type IIA
theory. We evaluate the BPS partition functions for all values of the moduli
parameter in the type IIB side, and find them completely agree with the results
in the type IIA side which was obtained by using Kontsevich-Soibelman's
wall-crossing formula. Our result is a quite strong evidence for string

Prenatal transplantation of human amniotic fluid stem cell could improve clinical outcome of type III spinal muscular atrophy in mice
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a single gene disorder affecting motor function in uterus. Amniotic fluid is an alternative source of stem cell to ameliorate SMA. Therefore, this study aims to examine the therapeutic potential of Human amniotic fluid stem cell (hAFSC) for SMA. Our SMA model mice were generated by deletion of exon 7 of Smn gene and knock-in of human SMN2. A total of 16 SMA model mice were injected with 1 × 105 hAFSC in uterus, and the other 16 mice served as the negative control. Motor function was analyzed by three behavioral tests. Engraftment of hAFSC in organs were assessed by flow cytometry and RNA scope. Frequency of myocytes, neurons and innervated receptors were estimated by staining. With hAFSC transplantation, 15 fetuses survived (93.75% survival) and showed better performance in all motor function tests. Higher engraftment frequency were observed in muscle and liver. Besides, the muscle with hAFSC transplantation expressed much laminin α and PAX-7. Significantly higher frequency of myocytes, neurons and innervated receptors were observed. In our study, hAFSC engrafted on neuromuscular organs and improved cellular and behavioral outcomes of SMA model mice. This fetal therapy could preserve the time window and treat in the uterus
Wall-crossing of D4-D2-D0 and flop of the conifold
We discuss the wall-crossing of the BPS bound states of a non-compact
holomorphic D4-brane with D2 and D0-branes on the conifold. We use the
Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing formula and analyze the BPS degeneracy in
various chambers. In particular we obtain a relation between BPS degeneracies
in two limiting attractor chambers related by a flop transition. Our result is

Multiple D4-D2-D0 on the Conifold and Wall-crossing with the Flop
We study the wall-crossing phenomena of D4-D2-D0 bound states with two units
of D4-brane charge on the resolved conifold. We identify the walls of marginal
stability and evaluate the discrete changes of the BPS indices by using the
Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing formula. In particular, we find that the
field theories on D4-branes in two large radius limits are properly connected
by the wall-crossings involving the flop transition of the conifold. We also
find that in one of the large radius limits there are stable bound states of

Oxygen impurities in NiAl: Relaxation effects
We have used a full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method to calculate
the effects of oxygen impurities on the electronic structure of NiAl. Using the
supercell method with a 16-atom supercell we have investigated the cases where
an oxygen atom is substitutionally placed at either a nickel or an aluminum
site. Full relaxation of the atoms within the supercell was allowed. We found
that oxygen prefers to occupy a nickel site over an aluminum site with a site
selection energy of 138 mRy (21,370 K). An oxygen atom placed at an aluminum
site is found to cause a substantial relaxation of its nickel neighbors away
from it. In contrast, this steric repulsion is hardly present when the oxygen
atom occupies the nickel site and is surrounded by aluminum neighbors. We
comment on the possible relation of this effect to the pesting degradation
phenomenon (essentially spontaneous disintegration in air) in nickel

Quantum mechanics of lattice gas automata. I. One particle plane waves and potentials
Classical lattice gas automata effectively simulate physical processes such
as diffusion and fluid flow (in certain parameter regimes) despite their
simplicity at the microscale. Motivated by current interest in quantum
computation we recently defined quantum lattice gas automata; in this paper we
initiate a project to analyze which physical processes these models can
effectively simulate. Studying the single particle sector of a one dimensional
quantum lattice gas we find discrete analogues of plane waves and wave packets,
and then investigate their behaviour in the presence of inhomogeneous

Negative Quasi-Probability as a Resource for Quantum Computation
A central problem in quantum information is to determine the minimal physical
resources that are required for quantum computational speedup and, in
particular, for fault-tolerant quantum computation. We establish a remarkable
connection between the potential for quantum speed-up and the onset of negative
values in a distinguished quasi-probability representation, a discrete analog
of the Wigner function for quantum systems of odd dimension. This connection
allows us to resolve an open question on the existence of bound states for
magic-state distillation: we prove that there exist mixed states outside the
convex hull of stabilizer states that cannot be distilled to non-stabilizer
target states using stabilizer operations. We also provide an efficient
simulation protocol for Clifford circuits that extends to a large class of
