    A content analysis of social media posts among recreational cyclists: A gender perspective

    Recreational cyclists are pertinent but rarely studied leisure and tourism segment. Recreational cycling has traditionally been considered as a ā€˜masculine stereotypedā€™ sport. The purpose of the research is to better understand a gendered consumer view of recreational cycling and to possibly promote recreational cycling to women and men in countries like South Africa with keen interests of recreational cycling in the form of sport tourism. This research employs a content analysis of social media posts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as a research method. Specifically, the gendered nature of recreational cycling is focused upon. In total, 2,504 posts from 1,598 unique authors from South Africa are analysed. As a result, this research shows that in the South African context male cyclists tend to like to attend the specialised event and race for their health and fitness while female cyclists seem to find more enjoyable and family-friendly (children focused) cycling. The results also confirm the paradox that women are generally presented in more family oriented roles, while men are typically shown as more independent in the media. Managerial implications and future research are also presented

    Student Engagement and Satisfaction with Online Learning: Comparative Eastern and Western Perspectives

    This study investigated the antecedents of student engagement in online learning and the consequent impact on higher education studentsā€™ satisfaction with online learning. More specifically, a structural model was proposed to examine studentsā€™ perceptions of adaptability, interactivity, computer/ Internet self-efficacy and psychological safety as key factors impacting their engagement with online learning tools and satisfaction with the online learning experience. A self-administered online survey was conducted with 539 undergraduate students in China, Australia, and South Korea. Structural equation modelling and multigroup analysis were used to test the studyā€™s hypotheses. The findings indicated that the proposed four antecedents significantly impacted their engagement with online learning tools, influencing their overall satisfaction with the online learning experience. In addition, this study found significant differences between the relationships of the four antecedents of engagement with online learning tools among students in China, Australia, and South Korea, influencing their satisfaction with the online learning experience. The study concludes with theoretical and practical implications informing future institutional practices

    Application of Game Theory and Uncertainty Theory in Port Competition between Hong Kong Port and Shenzhen Port

    AbstractThis paper unveils the strong competition in container cargo between Hong Kong Port which has been emerging as an international maritime center since the 1970s and Shenzhen Port which has recently gained remarkable achievements in the Pearl River Delta region. Among various competing strategies, the study focuses on the long-term one in which two ports will decide to compete by investing in capacity. The purpose of this research is to examine their decision making process and to suggest future strategic actions in the current situation. Within its scope, only economic profit brought back from the investment is considered. For this reason, an uncertain payoff two-person game model is developed where an uncertain factor of demand is involved. In applying Uncertainty theory (Liu, 2013), the two methods to solve the game are introduced, including uncertain statistics and the expected Nash Equilibrium strategy. The results obtained from this research generate meaningful suggestions for future competition plan for the two selected ports, which conclude that Shenzhen is the dominant port in this long-term strategy. Compared to existing works on the same topic, the paper shows its distinctiveness by studying the latest competitive situation with regard to the uncertain demand in the game model

    Living Ī²-selective cyclopolymerization using Ru dithiolate catalysts

    Cyclopolymerization (CP) of 1,6-heptadiyne derivatives is a powerful method for synthesizing conjugated polyenes containing five- or six-membered rings via Ī±- or Ī²-addition, respectively. Fifteen years of studies on CP have revealed that user-friendly Ru-based catalysts promoted only Ī±-addition; however, we recently achieved Ī²-selective regiocontrol to produce polyenes containing six-membered-rings, using a dithiolate-chelated Ru-based catalyst. Unfortunately, slow initiation and relatively low catalyst stability inevitably led to uncontrolled polymerization. Nevertheless, this investigation gave us some clues to how successful living polymerization could be achieved. Herein, we report living Ī²-selective CP by rational engineering of the steric factor on monomer or catalyst structures. As a result, the molecular weight of the conjugated polymers from various monomers could be controlled with narrow dispersities, according to the catalyst loading. A mechanistic investigation by in situ kinetic studies using ^1H NMR spectroscopy revealed that with appropriate pyridine additives, imposing a steric demand on either the monomer or the catalyst significantly improved the stability of the propagating carbene as well as the relative rates of initiation over propagation, thereby achieving living polymerization. Furthermore, we successfully prepared diblock and even triblock copolymers with a broad monomer scope

    Effects of Residentsā€™ Empowerment on Citizenship Behavior and Support for Convention Development: Moderation of Innovativeness

    This study investigated how residentsā€™ empowerment influences their engagement in the sustainability of the convention industry in their community, specifically, their citizenship behavior (CB) toward convention visitors and support for convention development in their community. Additionally, the current study examined the moderator of a convention centerā€™s innovativeness. The sample used for data analysis was 415 residents from Seoul and Busan, South Korea. The results of structural equation modeling revealed that residentsā€™ empowerment enhances their participation in CB toward visitors and support. The multi-group comparison analysis suggested that a convention centerā€™s innovativeness moderates the effect of residentsā€™ empowerment on their CB toward visitors but not on convention development support. These results highlight the important role of empowering residents in convention host communities in psychological, sociological, and political ways in promoting community engagement and support for convention development. Local authorities and convention center management should ensure that residents have sufficient knowledge about the benefits of convention development and involve them in decision-making processes

    Mapping the research trends on social media in the hospitality sector from 2010 to 2020

    Purpose - This study undertakes a systematic review of the literature to gain insight into existing studies on hospitality in social media and provide an update on current trends and themes in scholarship. Design - This study employs the systematic literature review to identify, evaluate, and synthesize the existing literature. Methodology - A total of 165 papers published between 2010ā€“2020 were examined using content analysis and Leximancer. Approach - This review uses a hybrid review structure that incorporates structured reviews and narrative elements supported by Leximancer analysis. Findings - The review highlights the theories and methods used, research fields and perspectives, and key research topics in the hospitality industry, showing a lack of engagement with theories, the use of a dominant theoretical approach (eWOM), and the use of quantitative research methods primarily to analyze content data. Changes in research trends are evident to keep pace with increasing social media data and respond to the needs of different industries. Originality - This study contributes by also identifying several research gaps and provide future scholarly endeavors

    Corrosion-Assisted Self-Growth of Au-Decorated ZnO Corn Silks and Their Photoelectrochemical Enhancement

    Modem nanotechnology generates more stringent requirements for the design and synthetic strategy of nanostructural materials. In this work, we demonstrate a novel strategy for the synthesis of "corn silk"-like ZnO hierarchical nanostructures, simplified as ZnO corn silk: silk-like ZnO nanotubes (NTs) with a large length-to-diameter ratio are grown on the top tip of corn-shaped ZnO nanorods (NRs). The synthetic method is unique in that when the ZnO NRs are dipped into the aqueous solution of NaBH4, the release of Zn2+ and OH- caused by the corrosion of ZnO NRs, as well as the subsequent growth of, ZnO NTs, could allow the process to run step-by-step in self-assembly mode. This process is directed and driven by the change in concentrations of hydrogen anion H(s)(-) induced by NaBH4, as well as hydroxyl ions (OH-) induced by the H- formation and hydrolysis of dissociative Zn atoms. The prepared ZnO corn silks exhibit highly enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) efficiency after decoration with Au nanoparticles (NPs). ZnO silks act as pathways to facilitate efficient charge transfer, and the Au NP decoration induces the plasmonic effect, causing the hot electrons to inject into ZnO under visible illumination. At the same time, the formation of a Schottky barrier at the Au/ZnO interface can retard the electron-hole recombination. Overall, Au-decorated ZnO corn silk with an increased PEC efficiency represents a promising photoanode material, and the synthesis route developed in the current study is applicable to building hierarchical nanostructures of other materials.1112sciescopu
