This study explores the current trends and challenges for ECEC teachers through narrative stories told by four young teachers working in Aich and Mie prefectures where many of their students\u27 families are non-Japanese or mixed race. These teachers were asked to tell their stories about how they met; responded to; felt by being challenged; or interacted with their students and their non-Japanese/mixed race families. Their narrative stories illustrate that the teachers had more difficulty interacting with the parents rather than the children. In addition, they also had problems which they attributed to the children of non-Japanese/mixed-race families, which were actually related to being novice teachers. One teacher\u27s narrative shows that with systematic on-going support she had several opportunities to discuss issues related to her students with other professionals knowledgeable in understanding other cultures. From the analysis of the narratives, the author finally suggests desired changes in teacher education programs and professional development training for new teachers

This study analyzes the educational outcomes and challenges of the first-year foundation seminar in college of education, Kyoei University. This mandatory seminar is divided into three blocks. One of them is ‶Activity block," which aims to provide opportunities for new students to acquire necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in university education utilizing cooperative inquiry-based learning approach. This study analyzes the records of the Activity Block curriculum in 2013 and 2014 and the data collected through questionnaires in 2014. The results showed relationships between the quality of group interactions and the quality of individual learning. It is assumed that the faculty could consider more tactful interventions into interactions within and among groups. In addition, the students with less sense of belonging and less anxiety tended to dropout at early stages. Potentially this questionnaire can take a role to identify students having difficulty to adopt their new life

An Endoscopic Case Report of Jejunal Leiomyosarcoma and Review of the Japanese Literature

Jejunoscopy for a small intestinal leiomyosarcoma was performed on a 73-year-old male. The patient was admitted because of a palpable abdominal mass. A barium meal study, abdominal ultrasonography, computed tomography and angiography suggested a leiomyogenic tumor with a central cavity arising from the jejunal loop extraluminally. Enteroscopy with a pediatric colonofiberscope (PCF) enabled us to observe a mucosal ulcer and a part of the cavity of the tumor. Histology of the resected tumor revealed it to be a leiomyosarcoma with a large central hollow connected to the mucosal ulcer. The authors discussed the endoscopic findings of 17 previously reported Japanese cases of jejunal leiomyosarcoma and the present case

Isolation of alveolar epithelial type II progenitor cells from adult human lungs

Resident stem/progenitor cells in the lung are important for tissue homeostasis and repair. However, a progenitor population for alveolar type II (ATII) cells in adult human lungs has not been identified. The aim of this study is to isolate progenitor cells from adult human lungs with the ability to differentiate into ATII cells. We isolated colony-forming cells that had the capability for self-renewal and the potential to generate ATII cells in vitro. These undifferentiated progenitor cells expressed surface markers of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and surfactant proteins associated with ATII cells, such as CD90 and pro-surfactant protein-C (pro-SP-C), respectively. Microarray analyses indicated that transcripts associated with lung development were enriched in the pro-SP-C+/CD90+ cells compared with bone marrow-MSCs. Furthermore, pathological evaluation indicated that pro-SP-C and CD90 double-positive cells were present within alveolar walls in normal lungs, and significantly increased in ATII cell hyperplasias contributing to alveolar epithelial repair in damaged lungs. Our findings demonstrated that adult human lungs contain a progenitor population for ATII cells. This study is a first step toward better understanding of stem cell biology in adult human lung alveoli
