IMMEDIATE EFFECTS OF WARM UP BY OVERWEIGHED BAT IMPLEMENT ON BAT SWING VELOCITY
The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of warming up by overweighed bat implement on bat swing velocity. Five softball players worked in this experiment and processed the following steps: swing official bat with and without overweight warm-ups (5 and 10 times). The maximal velocity of official bat swing was recorded by a 3-D cinematograph. IMPLEMENT AN EXTENSION CORD POWER SOCKET WITH EMERGENCY LIGHTING AND VOICE CONTROL LIGHTING FUNCTIONS
Conventional power sockets are equipped with an extension cord. Even with anti-overload devices, incidents of accidental discharge or damage to electrical appliances may still incur due to external factors. To address this problem, this study integrated the voice control and lighting functions to the design of the power socket with an extension cord. The proposed design is space-efficient and versatile, and can be used in living rooms, bedrooms, and other places having electrical appliances. The proposed design also integrated emergency lighting and flashlight functions, so as to expand the practicality and safety of the power socket
Adversarially Robust Submodular Maximization under Knapsack Constraints
We propose the first adversarially robust algorithm for monotone submodular
maximization under single and multiple knapsack constraints with scalable
implementations in distributed and streaming settings. For a single knapsack
constraint, our algorithm outputs a robust summary of almost optimal (up to
polylogarithmic factors) size, from which a constant-factor approximation to
the optimal solution can be constructed. For multiple knapsack constraints, our
approximation is within a constant-factor of the best known non-robust
solution.
We evaluate the performance of our algorithms by comparison to natural
robustifications of existing non-robust algorithms under two objectives: 1)
dominating set for large social network graphs from Facebook and Twitter
collected by the Stanford Network Analysis Project (SNAP), 2) movie
recommendations on a dataset from MovieLens. Experimental results show that our
algorithms give the best objective for a majority of the inputs and show strong
performance even compared to offline algorithms that are given the set of

A Comparison of Food-grade Folium mori Extract and 1-Deoxynojirimycin for Glycemic Control and Renal Function in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats
ABSTRACTFolium mori (桑葉 Sāng Yè, leaf of Morus alba L.; FM) is known to possess hypoglycemic effects, and 1-deoxynojirimycin (1-DNJ) has been proposed as an important functional compound in FM. However, the hypoglycemic activity of purified 1-DNJ has been rarely studied. It is also not known how FM and 1-DNJ affect the development of DM nephropathy. This study compared the antidiabetic effect of a commercial FM product with that of purified 1-DNJ in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Seven days after induction, the diabetic rats were gavaged with FM (1, 3, 10, and 30mg/kg/day), 1-DNJ (30mg/kg/day), or vehicle (distilled deionized water; 2ml/kg/day) for 7days. All doses of FM ameliorated fasting and post-prandial blood glucose concomitantly with an increase in peripheral and pancreatic levels of insulin and improved homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) in diabetic rats in a dose-dependent manner. Increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and nitrate/nitrite levels in the kidney, liver, and muscle of diabetic rats were reversed by all doses of FM. The renal function of the diabetic rats was normalized by all doses of FM, while blood pressure changes were reversed by FM at doses of 3mg/kg and above. Moreover, most of the above-mentioned parameters were improved by FM at doses of 3mg/kg and above to a similar extent as that of 1-DNJ. The results showed superior antidiabetic potential of the commercial FM product for glycemic control and protection against the development of diabetic nephropathy

Efficacy of the visual cognitive assessment test for mild cognitive impairment/mild dementia diagnosis: a meta-analysis
BackgroundMild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate stage between normal ageing and dementia. The early identification of MCI is important for timely intervention. The visual cognitive assessment test (VCAT) is a brief language-neutral screening tool for detecting MCI/mild dementia. This meta-analysis evaluated the diagnostic efficacy of the VCAT for MCI/mild dementia.MethodsMedline, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library were searched from their inception until August 2023 to identify studies using VCAT to diagnose MCI/mild dementia. The primary outcome was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of the VCAT for detecting MCI/mild dementia through area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AU-ROC) analysis. The secondary outcome was to explore the correlation between VCAT scores and MCI/mild dementia presence by comparing scores among patients with and without MCI/mild dementia. Pooled sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) were calculated.ResultsFive studies with 1,446 older adults (mean age 64–68.3 years) were included. The percentage of participants with MCI/mild dementia versus controls ranged from 16.5% to 87% across studies. All studies were conducted in Asian populations, mostly Chinese, in Singapore and Malaysia. The pooled sensitivity was 80% [95% confidence interval (CI) 68%–88%] and the specificity was 75% (95% CI 68%–80%). The AU-ROCC was 0.77 (95% CI 0.73–0.81). Patients with MCI/mild dementia had lower VCAT scores than the controls (mean difference −6.85 points, p < 0.00001).ConclusionVCAT demonstrated acceptable diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing MCI/mild dementia in cognitively normal older adults. As a language-neutral and culturally unbiased tool, the VCAT shows promise in detecting MCI/mild dementia. Feasibility Analysis of Improving the Accessibility and Security of Nano-Labs via Kinect
Abstract. This paper aims to probe into the feasibility of using Kinect to improve the accessibility and security of Nano labs, and characteristic analysis of the integrated system, i.e. Kinect, laptop, and IP Power, has been therefore carried out to interpret the feasibility in question. The finding is that the integrated system can improve the interaction between participants and labs, and the aforementioned interaction includes accessibility and security of both teachers and learners while using Nano labs. It is expected that following its future development, the use of Kinect on automatic switches of electronic equipment and devices, and the condition for commercializing the use on security maintenance and safety warnings of labs will mature in the future
The role of autologous bone graft in surgical treatment of hypertrophic nonunion of midshaft clavicle fractures
AbstractBackgroundThis study was conducted to evaluate the results of treating hypertrophic nonunion of mid-shaft clavicle fracture with a limited contact dynamic compression plate (LC-DCP) without autologous cancellous bone graft.MethodsFrom 1995 to 2008, 51 cases of hypertrophic nonunion of mid-shaft clavicle fracture were managed with open reduction and internal fixation by LC-DCP without bone graft involvement. Of these 51 cases, 30 had nonunion after failure of initial surgical treatment (Group 1), and 21 had nonunion after failure of conservative treatment (Group 2). Preoperative and postoperative case management were the same for both groups, with the average follow-up period being 20.4 months (range 18–36). Our study evaluated the radiographic results and functional outcomes of these cases according to the quick disability of arm, shoulder, and hand score.ResultsAll 51 cases resulted in uneventful unions. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding patient demography, cause of injury, preoperative and postoperative functional scores, length of operation, union time, and duration of hospitalization (p>0.05).ConclusionLC-DCP fixation is an effective method for treating hypertrophic nonunion of mid-shaft clavicle fracture. Local bone graft is sufficient to achieve necessary union, and autologous bone graft from other sites of the body appears unnecessary

Shear stress regulation of miR-93 and miR-484 maturation through nucleolin.
Pulsatile shear (PS) and oscillatory shear (OS) elicit distinct mechanotransduction signals that maintain endothelial homeostasis or induce endothelial dysfunction, respectively. A subset of microRNAs (miRs) in vascular endothelial cells (ECs) are differentially regulated by PS and OS, but the regulation of the miR processing and its implications in EC biology by shear stress are poorly understood. From a systematic in silico analysis for RNA binding proteins that regulate miR processing, we found that nucleolin (NCL) is a major regulator of miR processing in response to OS and essential for the maturation of miR-93 and miR-484 that target mRNAs encoding Krüppel-like factor 2 (KLF2) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). Additionally, anti-miR-93 and anti-miR-484 restore KLF2 and eNOS expression and NO bioavailability in ECs under OS. Analysis of posttranslational modifications of NCL identified that serine 328 (S328) phosphorylation by AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) was a major PS-activated event. AMPK phosphorylation of NCL sequesters it in the nucleus, thereby inhibiting miR-93 and miR-484 processing and their subsequent targeting of KLF2 and eNOS mRNA. Elevated levels of miR-93 and miR-484 were found in sera collected from individuals afflicted with coronary artery disease in two cohorts. These findings provide translational relevance of the AMPK-NCL-miR-93/miR-484 axis in miRNA processing in EC health and coronary artery disease
Computational analysis of a novel mutation in ETFDH gene highlights its long-range effects on the FAD-binding motif
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Multiple acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by the defects in the mitochondrial electron transfer system and the metabolism of fatty acids. Recently, mutations in electron transfer flavoprotein dehydrogenase (<it>ETFDH</it>) gene, encoding electron transfer flavoprotein:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (ETF:QO) have been reported to be the major causes of riboflavin-responsive MADD. To date, no studies have been performed to explore the functional impact of these mutations or their mechanism of disrupting enzyme activity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>High resolution melting (HRM) analysis and sequencing of the entire <it>ETFDH </it>gene revealed a novel mutation (p.Phe128Ser) and the hotspot mutation (p.Ala84Thr) from a patient with MADD. According to the predicted 3D structure of ETF:QO, the two mutations are located within the flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) binding domain; however, the two residues do not have direct interactions with the FAD ligand. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and normal mode analysis (NMA), we found that the p.Ala84Thr and p.Phe128Ser mutations are most likely to alter the protein structure near the FAD binding site as well as disrupt the stability of the FAD binding required for the activation of ETF:QO. Intriguingly, NMA revealed that several reported disease-causing mutations in the ETF:QO protein show highly correlated motions with the FAD-binding site.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Based on the present findings, we conclude that the changes made to the amino acids in ETF:QO are likely to influence the FAD-binding stability.</p
