    Comparison of resident and tourist preferences for public beach access

    As coastal destinations continue to grow, due to tourism and residential expansion, the demand for public beach access and related amenities will also increase. As a resultagencies that provide beach access and related amenities face challenges when considering both residents and visitors use beaches and likely possess different needs, as well as different preferences for management decisions. Being a resident of a coastal county provides more opportunity to use local beaches, but coastal tourism is an important and growing economic engine in coastal communities (Kriesel, Landry, & Keeler, 2005; Pogue & Lee, 1999). Therefore, providing agencies with a comprehensive assessment of the differences between these two groups will increase the likelihood of effective management programs and policies for the provision of public beach access and related amenities.     Resolution of Overlapping Ultrasonic Echoes using Consistent Frequency Domain Amplitude-Phase Relationships

    The ability to identify overlapping echoes is crucial to the enhancement of temporal resolution in ultrasonic testing. The majority of the techniques currently being investigated for separation of overlapping ultrasonic echoes are based on deconvolution. However, single reference deconvolution techniques are sensitive to the choice of the reference waveform and dictionary based deconvolution techniques require the enforcement of sparsity conditions. We propose a new post-processing algorithm that exploits the consistent frequency domain amplitude and phase relationships of two overlapping echoes. The frequency amplitude profiles are used as inputs and the corresponding set of phase values are calculated as the outputs. An example of the time profile and phase difference between two overlapping echoes are shown in Figure 1. The suitability of the output phase responses are then used as a metric to determine the accuracy of the trial amplitude inputs. Compared to dictionary based deconvolution approaches, the proposed method has a reduced search space in the optimization problem as the phases are now by-products of the algorithm.     Band Electronic Structure of One- and Two-Dimensional Pentacene Molecular Crystals

    We report EHT calculations of the band electronic structure of substituted pentacene derivatives and the polymorphs of the parent compound. The results show that there are wide disparities among the bandwidths and electronic dimensionalities of these compounds. The parent pentacene polymorphs are 2-dimensional in their band electronic structure with moderate dispersions; the bandwidths in the 14.1 Ă… d-spacing polymorph are noticeably larger than for the 14.5 Ă… d-spacing polymorph, reported by Campbell. Whereas the parent pentacene polymorphs adopt the well-known herringbone packing, the new, substituted pentacenes are noticeably different in their solid state structures and this is reflected in the band electronic structures. TMS adopts a highly 1-dimensional structure that leads to a large bandwidth along the stacking direction; TIPS also adopts a stacked structure, but because the molecules are laterally interleaved in the fashion of bricks in a wall, this compound is strongly 2-dimensional.

    Dynamic modelling of hepatitis C virus transmission among people who inject drugs: a methodological review

    Equipment sharing among people who inject drugs (PWID) is a key risk factor in infection by hepatitis C virus (HCV). Both the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing HCV transmission in this population (such as opioid substitution therapy, needle exchange programs or improved treatment) are difficult to evaluate using field surveys. Ethical issues and complicated access to the PWID population make it difficult to gather epidemiological data. In this context, mathematical modelling of HCV transmission is a useful alternative for comparing the cost and effectiveness of various interventions. Several models have been developed in the past few years. They are often based on strong hypotheses concerning the population structure. This review presents compartmental and individual-based models in order to underline their strengths and limits in the context of HCV infection among PWID.     Impact of a treatment as prevention strategy on hepatitis C virus transmission and on morbidity in people who inject drugs

    Background: Highly effective direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimens (90% efficacy) are becoming available for hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment. This therapeutic revolution leads us to consider possibility of eradicating the virus. However, for this, an effective cascade of care is required. Methods: In the context of the incoming DAAs, we used a dynamic individual-based model including a model of the people who inject drugs (PWID) social network to simulate the impact of improved testing, linkage to care, and adherence to treatment, and of modified treatment recommendation on the transmission and on the morbidity of HCV in PWID in France. Results: Under the current incidence and cascade of care, with treatment initiated at fibrosis stage ≥\geF2, the HCV prevalence decreased from 42.8% to 24.9% [95% confidence interval 24.8%--24.9%] after 10 years. Changing treatment initiation criteria to treat from F0 was the only intervention leading to a substantial additional decrease in the prevalence, which fell to 11.6% [11.6%--11.7%] at 10 years. Combining this change with improved testing, linkage to care, and adherence to treatment decreased HCV prevalence to 7% [7%--7.1%] at 10 years and avoided 15.3% [14.0%-16.6%] and 29.0% [27.9%--30.1%] of cirrhosis complications over 10 and 40 years respectively. Conclusion: A high decrease in viral transmission occurs only when treatment is initiated before liver disease progresses to severe stages, suggesting that systematic treatment in PWID, where incidence remains high, would be beneficial. However, eradication will be difficult to achieve

    Efficient scheduling algorithms for quality-of-service guarantees in the Internet

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2000.Includes bibliographical references (p. 167-172).The unifying theme of this thesis is the design of packet schedulers to provide quality-of- service (QoS) guarantees for various networking problem settings. There is a dual emphasis on both theoretical justification and simulation evaluation. We have worked on several widely different problem settings - optical networks, input-queued crossbar switches, and CDMA wireless networks - and we found that the same set of scheduling techniques can be applied successfully in all these cases to provide per-flow bandwidth, delay and max-min fairness guarantees. We formulated the abstract scheduling problems as a sum of two aspects. First, the particular problem setting imposes constraints which dictate what kinds of transmission patterns are allowed by the physical hardware resources, i.e., what are the feasible solutions. Second, the users require some form of QoS guarantees, which translate into optimality criteria judging the feasible solutions. The abstract problem is how to design an algorithm that finds an optimal (or near-optimal) solution among the feasible ones. Our schedulers are based on a credit scheme. Specifically, flows receive credits at their guaranteed rate, and the arrival stream is compared to the credit stream acting as a reference. From this comparison, we derive various parameters such as the amount of unspent credits of a flow and the waiting time of a packet since its corresponding credit arrived. We then design algorithms which prioritize flows based on these parameters. We demonstrate, both by rigorous theoretical proofs and by simulations, that these parameters can be bounded.
