    Packet Transactions: High-level Programming for Line-Rate Switches

    Many algorithms for congestion control, scheduling, network measurement, active queue management, security, and load balancing require custom processing of packets as they traverse the data plane of a network switch. To run at line rate, these data-plane algorithms must be in hardware. With today's switch hardware, algorithms cannot be changed, nor new algorithms installed, after a switch has been built. This paper shows how to program data-plane algorithms in a high-level language and compile those programs into low-level microcode that can run on emerging programmable line-rate switching chipsets. The key challenge is that these algorithms create and modify algorithmic state. The key idea to achieve line-rate programmability for stateful algorithms is the notion of a packet transaction : a sequential code block that is atomic and isolated from other such code blocks. We have developed this idea in Domino, a C-like imperative language to express data-plane algorithms. We show with many examples that Domino provides a convenient and natural way to express sophisticated data-plane algorithms, and show that these algorithms can be run at line rate with modest estimated die-area overhead.Comment: 16 page

    Patient-reported outcomes measures and patient preferences for minimally invasive glaucoma surgical devices.

    BackgroundMany therapeutic options are available to glaucoma patients. One recent therapeutic option is minimally invasive glaucoma surgical (MIGS) devices. It is unclear how patients view different treatments and which patient-reported outcomes would be most relevant in patients with mild to moderate glaucoma. We developed a questionnaire for patients eligible for MIGS devices and a patient preference study to examine the value patients place on certain outcomes associated with glaucoma and its therapies.ObjectivesTo summarize the progress to date.MethodsQuestionnaire development: We drafted the questionnaire items based on input from one physician and four patient focus groups, and a review of the literature. We tested item clarity with six cognitive interviews. These items were further refined. Patient preference study: We identified important benefit and risk outcomes qualitatively using semi-structured, one-on-one interviews with patients who were eligible for MIGS devices. We then prioritized these outcomes quantitatively using best-worst scaling methods.ResultsQuestionnaire testing: Three concepts were deemed relevant for the questionnaire: functional limitations, symptoms, and psychosocial factors. We will evaluate the reliability and validity of the 52-item draft questionnaire in an upcoming field test. Patient preference study: We identified 13 outcomes that participants perceived as important. Outcomes with the largest relative importance weights were "adequate IOP control" and "drive a car during the day."ConclusionsPatients have the potential to steer clinical research towards outcomes that are important to them. Incorporating patients' perspectives into the MIGS device development and evaluation process may expedite innovation and availability of these devices

    Endothermic salts integrated in impermeable suits do not reduce heat strain during exercise

    Wearing impermeable garments during work inherently leads to heat strain, even in cold environments [1]. Phase change materials (mainly paraffin’s or salt [4]) may be used as a thermal buffer (e.g. [2]) to reduce initial heat stress. Salts can also be used to absorb sweat, which may enhance the cooling power from the skin. Recently, specific encapsulated salts utilising KSCN (potassium thiocyanate) have been developed that consume energy when the KSCN dissolves in water. The heat consumed when the KSCN (present inside 150 g of capsules containing 60% KSCN salt) dissolves in water is 22410 J (249 J/g * 60% * 150 g). When this solving takes place over a period of 30 minutes, the average power transfer is 12 W. One (1) g of KSCN-containing capsules absorbs close to 1 g of moisture. If we assume that 150 g sweat extra can be evaporated from the skin, this yields an extra cooling power of 182 W for 30 minutes. However this evaporated water from the skin is subsequently absorbed by the KSCN in the capsules. During this absorption from the gas phase, the condensation heat is released to the KSCN salt: about 182 W for 30 minutes. However, we hypothesise that this condensation heat will be partly transferred to the body and partly to the environment [3], providing a net benefit to the body. Thus, the total cooling effect due to the salt capsules is composed of two parts: • The cooling effect of about 12 W due to the heat consumption by the dissolving of the salts in water; • The cooling effect of maximal 182 W, which equals the difference between the evaporative heat and the condensation heat. The latter is generated in the salt capsules that transfer part of the heat to the environment. The overall cooling effect should therefore be in between 12 W and 194 W. The purpose of our study was to test the efficacy of a KSCN-based absorbing salt as a PCM for use within impermeable protective clothing. We tested the PCM during 20 min of moderate exercise in a hot (35°C, 40% relative humidity) environment, and hypothesized that thermal strain would be lower in the PCM compared to the non-PCM condition

    Cell–cell Interaction Underlies Formation of Fluid in the Male Reproductive Tract of the Rat

    The epithelia lining the epididymides of many species consists of several cell types. We have provided evidence that the basal cells are essential to the integrated functions of the epithelium. Basal cells, but not principal cells, and other cells in the epididymis express TRPC3 and COX-1. We have isolated basal cells from intact rat epididymis using antibody-coated Dynabeads and subjected them to whole-cell patch-clamp measurement of nonselective cation channel activity, a feature of TRPC3 protein, and Fluo-3 fluorescence measurement of intracellular Ca2+ concentration. The results show that a nonselective cation current blockable by La3+ (0.1 mM), Gd3+ (0.1 mM), or SKF96365 (20 μM) could be activated by lysylbradykinin (200 nM). In cells loaded with Fluo-3, addition of lysylbradykinin (100 nM) caused a sustained increase of intracellular Ca2+. This effect was blocked by Gd3+ (0.1 mM) or SKF96365 (20 μM) and was not observed in Fluo-3–loaded principal cells. Stimulation of basal cell/principal cell cocultures with lysylbradykinin (200 nM) evoked in principal cells a current with CFTR-Cl− channel characteristics. Isolated principal cells in the absence of basal cells did not respond to lysylbradykinin but responded to PGE2 (100 nM) with activation of a CFTR-like current. Basal cells, but not principal cells, released prostaglandin E2 when stimulated with lysylbradykinin (100 nM). The release was blocked by SKF96365 (20 μM) and BAPTA-AM (0.05 or 0.1 mM). Confluent cell monolayers harvested from a mixture of disaggregated principal cells and basal cells responded to lysylbradykinin (100 nM) and PGE2 (500 nM) with an increase in electrogenic anion secretion. The former response was dependent on prostaglandin synthesis as piroxicam blocked the response. However, cell cultures obtained from principal cells alone responded to PGE2 but not to bradykinin. These results support the notion that basal cells regulate principal cells through a Ca2+ and COX signaling pathway

    Evaluation of Concussion Incidence and Modulating Factors in the 2013-2017 Australian Football League

    The increasing awareness and popularization of concussions in the research realm over the last few years have begun to shed more light on the detrimental effects associated with repetitive head trauma. While the majority of the current literature focuses on the National Football League (NFL) and National Hockey League (NHL), several other high-impact sports have been implementing concussion management protocols to protect their players. The Australian Football League (AFL) is a prime example of a major contact sport that has undertaken recent changes to its concussion assessment and management modalities. We recognize the benefit of reporting potential changes in concussion rates over the 2013-2017 AFL seasons. We were interested in some of the factors not yet evaluated before, which may contribute to the overall concussion incidence such as “style-of-play” factors” (home/away, win/loss, points scored, time of season). We hope the results of this analysis shed light on the mechanisms by which concussion rates can be mitigated across major contact sports
