Sequential optimization for efficient high-quality object proposal generation
We are motivated by the need for a generic object proposal generation algorithm which achieves good balance between object detection recall, proposal localization quality and computational efficiency. We propose a novel object proposal algorithm, BING ++, which inherits the virtue of good computational efficiency of BING [1] but significantly improves its proposal localization quality. At high level we formulate the problem of object proposal generation from a novel probabilistic perspective, based on which our BING++ manages to improve the localization quality by employing edges and segments to estimate object boundaries and update the proposals sequentially. We propose learning the parameters efficiently by searching for approximate solutions in a quantized parameter space for complexity reduction. We demonstrate the generalization of BING++ with the same fixed parameters across different object classes and datasets. Empirically our BING++ can run at half speed of BING on CPU, but significantly improve the localization quality by 18.5 and 16.7 percent on both VOC2007 and Microhsoft COCO datasets, respectively. Incommensurate superlattice and 90° twist boundaries in the superconducting phase of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O
We have observed an incommensurate superlattice structure in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system using electron diffraction. The wave vector of the superlattice, q=(0,1/4.7,1), has an incommensurate component along the b axis and a commensurate component along the c axis. Twist boundaries perpendicular to the c axis, across which the crystallographic a and b axes are rotated 90°, are commonly observed in this system
Evolution of asexual and sexual reproduction in the aspergilli
Aspergillus nidulans has long-been used as a model organism to gain insights into the genetic basis of asexual and sexual developmental processes both in
other members of the genus Aspergillus, and filamentous fungi in general. Paradigms have been established concerning the regulatory mechanisms of conidial
development. However, recent studies have shown considerable genome divergence in the fungal kingdom, questioning the general applicability of findings from
Aspergillus, and certain longstanding evolutionary theories have been questioned. The phylogenetic distribution of key regulatory elements of asexual reproduction in
A. nidulans was investigated in a broad taxonomic range of fungi. This revealed that some proteins were well conserved in the Pezizomycotina (e.g. AbaA, FlbA, FluG,
NsdD, MedA, and some velvet proteins), suggesting similar developmental roles. However, other elements (e.g. BrlA) had a more restricted distribution solely in the
Eurotiomycetes, and it appears that the genetic control of sporulation seems to be more complex in the aspergilli than in some other taxonomic groups of the
Pezizomycotina. The evolution of the velvet protein family is discussed based on the history of expansion and contraction events in the early divergent fungi. Heterologous expression of the A. nidulans abaA gene in Monascus ruber failed to induce development of complete conidiophores as seen in the aspergilli, but did result in
increased conidial production. The absence of many components of the asexual developmental pathway from members of the Saccharomycotina supports the hypothesis
that differences in the complexity of their spore formation is due in part to the increased diversity of the sporulation machinery evident in the Pezizomycotina. Investigations were also made into the evolution of sex and sexuality in the aspergilli. MAT loci were identified from the heterothallic Aspergillus (Emericella) heterothallicus
and Aspergillus (Neosartorya) fennelliae and the homothallic Aspergillus pseudoglaucus (=Eurotium repens). A consistent architecture of the MAT locus was seen in
these and other heterothallic aspergilli whereas much variation was seen in the arrangement of MAT loci in homothallic aspergilli. This suggested that it is most likely that
the common ancestor of the aspergilli exhibited a heterothallic breeding system. Finally, the supposed prevalence of asexuality in the aspergilli was examined. Investigations were made using A. clavatus as a representative ‘asexual’ species. It was possible to induce a sexual cycle in A. clavatus given the correct MAT1-1 and
MAT1-2 partners and environmental conditions, with recombination confirmed utilising molecular markers. This indicated that sexual reproduction might be possible in

Observation of Two New N* Peaks in J/psi -> and Decays
The system in decays of is limited to be
isospin 1/2 by isospin conservation. This provides a big advantage in studying
compared with and experiments which mix
isospin 1/2 and 3/2 for the system. Using 58 million decays
collected with the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, more than 100 thousand
events are obtained. Besides two well known
peaks at 1500 MeV and 1670 MeV, there are two new, clear peaks in
the invariant mass spectrum around 1360 MeV and 2030 MeV. They are the
first direct observation of the peak and a long-sought "missing"
peak above 2 GeV in the invariant mass spectrum. A simple
Breit-Wigner fit gives the mass and width for the peak as MeV and MeV, and for the new peak above 2 GeV
as MeV and MeV, respectively
Magnetic properties of epitaxial single crystal ultrathin Fe\u3csub\u3e3\u3c/sub\u3eSi films on GaAs (001)
Magnetic properties of Fe3Si films with thickness from 2 to 210 monolayers (ML) epitaxially grown on GaAs (001) were studied using a superconducting quantum interference device and alternating gradient force magnetometers. Growth of these single-crystal intermetallic compound films were carried out in a multichamber molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) system. The samples were covered in situ with Au 50 Ã… thick to prevent oxidation when the samples were removed from the MBE chamber. All the films are ferromagnetic even for samples as thin as 2 ML. The easy magnetization direction of the films is parallel to the film surface. The magnetic coercivity forces (Hc) of the samples increase as the film thickness decreases to 10 ML, and then decrease when the film thickness decreases further to 2 ML
Search for Invisible Decays of and in and
Using a data sample of decays collected with the BES
II detector at the BEPC, searches for invisible decays of and
in to and are performed.
The signals, which are reconstructed in final states, are used
to tag the and decays. No signals are found for the
invisible decays of either or , and upper limits at the 90%
confidence level are determined to be for the ratio
and for . These are the first

Superconducting Coherence and the Helicity Modulus in Vortex Line Models
We show how commonly used models for vortex lines in three dimensional
superconductors can be modified to include k=0 excitations. We construct a
formula for the k=0 helicity modulus in terms of fluctuations in the projected
area of vortex loops. This gives a convenient criterion for the presence of
superconducting coherence. We also present Monte Carlo simulations of a
continuum vortex line model for the melting of the Abrikosov vortex lattice in

The smallest eigenvalue of Hankel matrices
Let H_N=(s_{n+m}),n,m\le N denote the Hankel matrix of moments of a positive
measure with moments of any order. We study the large N behaviour of the
smallest eigenvalue lambda_N of H_N. It is proved that lambda_N has exponential
decay to zero for any measure with compact support. For general determinate
moment problems the decay to 0 of lambda_N can be arbitrarily slow or
arbitrarily fast. In the indeterminate case, where lambda_N is known to be
bounded below by a positive constant, we prove that the limit of the n'th
smallest eigenvalue of H_N for N tending to infinity tends rapidly to infinity
with n. The special case of the Stieltjes-Wigert polynomials is discussed
Normal Cones and Thompson Metric
The aim of this paper is to study the basic properties of the Thompson metric
in the general case of a real linear space ordered by a cone . We
show that has monotonicity properties which make it compatible with the
linear structure. We also prove several convexity properties of and some
results concerning the topology of , including a brief study of the
-convergence of monotone sequences. It is shown most of the results are
true without any assumption of an Archimedean-type property for . One
considers various completeness properties and one studies the relations between
them. Since is defined in the context of a generic ordered linear space,
with no need of an underlying topological structure, one expects to express its
completeness in terms of properties of the ordering, with respect to the linear
structure. This is done in this paper and, to the best of our knowledge, this
has not been done yet. The Thompson metric and order-unit (semi)norms
are strongly related and share important properties, as both are
defined in terms of the ordered linear structure. Although and
are only topological (and not metrical) equivalent on , we
prove that the completeness is a common feature. One proves the completeness of
the Thompson metric on a sequentially complete normal cone in a locally convex
space. At the end of the paper, it is shown that, in the case of a Banach
space, the normality of the cone is also necessary for the completeness of the

Combined CI+MBPT calculations of energy levels and transition amplitudes in Be, Mg, Ca, and Sr
Configuration interaction (CI) calculations in atoms with two valence
electrons, carried out in the V(N-2) Hartree-Fock potential of the core, are
corrected for core-valence interactions using many-body perturbation theory
(MBPT). Two variants of the mixed CI+MBPT theory are described and applied to
obtain energy levels and transition amplitudes for Be, Mg, Ca, and Sr
