The second generation of Louis XIV's painters, 1665-1715 : painting History : training, visual learning and production
Through which terms History painting is changing under the reign of Louis XIV? History painting evolves during the period which covers the second part of the reign of Louis XIV. This change is due to modifications dependent on the evolution of the Royal commissions and of the Academic framework itself, as well as the transformation of the context of creation apart from the Royal Academy which renews the way of apprehending and conceiving the History painting. From the study and analysis of the works of History painters members of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture between 1673 and 1694, this thesis reconsiders the criteria of evolution of historical style in painting at the turn of the XVIIe Century. To begin with, the artistsâ training and the definition of History painting at that time shall be discussed (I). Then we shall analyze the production of these painters for the Royal Academy and for the King after their approval within the Royal institution (II). Furthermore, in order to define better the History painting characteristics at this time, the study of the works for private individuals and religious institutions (i.e. apart from the Royal Academy) will question the historiographic vision which claims that History painting comes from a crisis; it will also clarify its new ways of transformation, in particular through the hybridization of styles (III)
By circumventing a still strict hierarchy between the different types of subjects, during the reign of Louis XIV history painting took on a hybrid form. The synthesis of pictorial genres occupied a large part of most paintersâ production. Of the major figures of this generation of painters, La Fosse was the only one not to adopt this evolution. By establishing himself as the precursor of the assimilation of Venetian and Nordic models, he revived the use of a certain colour and a free brushstroke. While he developed smiling figures that made his style unique, he remained faithful to the original historic genre, ignoring a new form, which for other painters marked the turn of the century

International audienceThe study carried out by the MusĂ©e de la Chasse et de la Nature and the University of Paris 1 as part of the PictOu project, supported by the DIM-MAP Ile de France, dedicated to Oudry's painting technique, allowed the examination of two pendants painted on copper by Oudry, Chien en arret sur deux faisans (inv. 012.1) and Deux chiens gardant du gibier mort (inv. 012.2) painted in 1747 for Louis XV. These works are similar to a second version of Chien en arret sur deux faisans (1748), which was originally engraved on a matrix of a royal hunting license. Little research has been devoted to painting on copper (1999, 2017). As for his practice in France in the 18th century, Ackroyd's publication on Lancret's Four Moments of the Day (2004) appears to be one of the few. Lancret, Watteau and Vernet remain the most frequently cited artists. Although Oudry's Conference is mentioned in the technical study of the previous artists, the production of Oudry on copper remains absent from the publications.

In parallel to the exhibition "Charles de la Fosse: The Triumph of Colour", the MusĂ©e National des ChĂąteaux de Versailles et de Trianon and the Research Centre of the ChĂąteau de Versailles organized an international conference focused on the artist. The exhibition, divided into five main sections (commissions for royal houses; La Fosse as draughtsman; Academic tradition; the triumph of colour; and a precursor to the eighteenth century), was an opportunity to examine a major artist from the second half of Louis XIVâs reign. The conference was able to better situate Charles de La Fosse (1636â1716) within the challenges facing artistic practice around 1700, the study of which has been profoundly advanced since the work of Antoine Schnapper. While remaining centred on Charles de la Fosseâs oeuvre, at once deepening and extending the exhibitionâs scope, the conference was structured around four main thematic sessions: The art of Charles de La Fosse; Charles de La Fosse and the grand dĂ©cor; Charles de La Fosse and mythology; Charles de La Fosse and the artistic capitals. Conference convenors: BĂ©atrice Sarrazin (heritage curator in charge of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century paintings at the MusĂ©e National des ChĂąteaux de Versailles et de Trianon) and Olivier Bonfait (Professor of Modern Art History, Centre Georges Chevrier â CNRS, University of Burgundy). The complete conference programme is available on the CRCV website. Thirteen of the fifteen papers presented at the conference are published here, edited by BĂ©atrice Sarrazin and Olivier Bonfait. Nine of the thirteen papers presented at the conference are published here, with two additional contributions and an introduction and conclusion written for this publication, edited by BĂ©atrice Sarrazin and Olivier Bonfait.
