Statistics Of The Burst Model At Super-critical Phase
We investigate the statistics of a model of type-I X-ray burst [Phys. Rev. E,
{\bf 51}, 3045 (1995)] in its super-critical phase. The time evolution of the
burnable clusters, places where fire can pass through, is studied using simple
statistical arguments. We offer a simple picture for the time evolution of the
percentage of space covered by burnable clusters. A relation between the
time-average and the peak percentage of space covered by burnable clusters is
also derived.Comment: 11 Pages in Revtex 3.0. Two figures available by sending request to

Space shuttle contamination due to backflow from control motor exhaust
Spacecraft contamination of the space shuttle orbiter and accompanying Spacelab payloads is studied. The scattering of molecules from the vernier engines and flash evaporator nozzle after impingement on the orbiter wing surfaces, and the backflow of molecules out of the flash evaporator nozzle plume flow field due to intermolecular collisions in the plume are the problems discussed. A method was formulated for dealing with these problems, and detailed results are given
Theory of enhanced performance emerging in a sparsely-connected competitive population
We provide an analytic theory to explain Anghel et al.'s recent numerical
finding whereby a maximum in the global performance emerges for a
sparsely-connected competitive population [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 058701 (2004)].
We show that the effect originates in the highly-correlated dynamics of
strategy choice, and can be significantly enhanced using a simple modification
to the model.Comment: This revised version will appear in PRE as a Rapid Com
Three-dimensional finite element analysis for high velocity impact
A finite element algorithm for solving unsteady, three-dimensional high velocity impact problems is presented. A computer program was developed based on the Eulerian hydroelasto-viscoplastic formulation and the utilization of the theorem of weak solutions. The equations solved consist of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy, equation of state, and appropriate constitutive equations. The solution technique is a time-dependent finite element analysis utilizing three-dimensional isoparametric elements, in conjunction with a generalized two-step time integration scheme. The developed code was demonstrated by solving one-dimensional as well as three-dimensional impact problems for both the inviscid hydrodynamic model and the hydroelasto-viscoplastic model
A Solvable Model of Two-Dimensional Dilaton-Gravity Coupled to a Massless Scalar Field
We present a solvable model of two-dimensional dilaton-gravity coupled to a
massless scalar field. We locally integrate the field equations and briefly
discuss the properties of the solutions. For a particular choice of the
coupling between the dilaton and the scalar field the model can be interpreted
as the two-dimensional effective theory of 2+1 cylindrical gravity minimally
coupled to a massless scalar field.Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Toward RADSCAT measurements over the sea and their interpretation
Investigations into several areas which are essential to the execution and interpretation of suborbital observations by composite radiometer - scatterometer sensor (RADSCAT) are reported. Experiments and theory were developed to demonstrate the remote anemometric capability of the sensor over the sea through various weather conditions. It is shown that weather situations found in extra tropical cyclones are useful for demonstrating the all weather capability of the composite sensor. The large scale fluctuations of the wind over the sea dictate the observational coverage required to correlate measurements with the mean surface wind speed. Various theoretical investigations were performed to establish a premise for the joint interpretation of the experiment data. The effects of clouds and rains on downward radiometric observations over the sea were computed. A method of predicting atmospheric attenuation from joint observations is developed. In other theoretical efforts, the emission and scattering characteristics of the sea were derived. Composite surface theories with coherent and noncoherent assumptions were employed
Regional Capital Mobility in China: 1978-2006
We examine cross-region capital mobility in China and track how the degree of mobility has changed over time. The effects of fiscal and redistributive activities of different levels of government in China on private capital mobility are taken into account. Our results indicate that there was a significant improvement in capital mobility over time in China, particularly for private capital in the more developed regions. The central and provincial governments, via their taxation, spending, and transfers, loosen the relationship between private saving and investment and appear to promote capital mobility, particularly for less developed regions. There are considerable differences between more and less developed regions in terms of the degree of capital market integration and the improvement in capital mobility over time. The results have important policy implications on global re-balancing as well as regional development gap and risk-sharing within China.Feldstein-Horioka; Chinese cross-region capital mobility; saving-investment relationship; Chinese capital market integration
Lagrangian Floer superpotentials and crepant resolutions for toric orbifolds
We investigate the relationship between the Lagrangian Floer superpotentials
for a toric orbifold and its toric crepant resolutions. More specifically, we
study an open string version of the crepant resolution conjecture (CRC) which
states that the Lagrangian Floer superpotential of a Gorenstein toric orbifold
and that of its toric crepant resolution coincide after
analytic continuation of quantum parameters and a change of variables. Relating
this conjecture with the closed CRC, we find that the change of variable
formula which appears in closed CRC can be explained by relations between open
(orbifold) Gromov-Witten invariants. We also discover a geometric explanation
(in terms of virtual counting of stable orbi-discs) for the specialization of
quantum parameters to roots of unity which appears in Y. Ruan's original CRC
["The cohomology ring of crepant resolutions of orbifolds", Gromov-Witten
theory of spin curves and orbifolds, 117-126, Contemp. Math., 403, Amer. Math.
Soc., Providence, RI, 2006]. We prove the open CRC for the weighted projective
spaces using an equality between open
and closed orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants. Along the way, we also prove an
open mirror theorem for these toric orbifolds.Comment: 48 pages, 1 figure; v2: references added and updated, final version,
