The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that affect the secondary school students’ attitudes in science. This study was conducted using survey method. The sample of the study was 503 students from four different secondary schools in Bartın and Düzce. Data were obtained using the Survey of Factors Affecting Students’ Science Attitudes (SFASSA) and the Survey to Determine the Degree of Importance of Categories Affecting Students’ Science Attitudes (SDDICASSA). Qualitative data were subjected to a content analysis. For the analysis of the quantitative data, descriptive analysis was used. According to the results of the study, teacher is the most important category affecting the students’ science attitudesBu çalışmanın amacı ortaokul öğrencilerinin fen tutumlarını etkileyen faktörleri belirleyip, bu faktörlerden oluşan kategorilerin önemlilik derecesini tespit etmektir. Bu araştırmada nicel araştırma türlerinden deneysel olmayan araştırma desenlerinden tarama araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini 2014-15 eğitim-öğretim yılında Bartın ve Düzce illerindeki 4 farklı ortaokulda öğrenim görmekte olan 503 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veriler “Fen Tutumlarını Etkileyen Faktörler Anketi” ve “Fen Tutumlarını Etkileyen Kategorilerin Önemlilik Derecesini Belirleme Anketi” ile toplanmıştır. Nitel veriler içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Nicel verilerin analizinde betimsel analizden faydalanarak ortalama ve standart sapma değerleri hesaplanmıştır. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre öğrencilerin fen bilimleri dersine karşı tutumlarını etkileyen en önemli kategorilerin başında öğretmen kategorisi geldiği belirlenmiştir

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the basic knowledge and skills are attained within the scope of the course on Scientific Research Methods. In addition, the impact of the procedure, which is followed while implementing the course, on the students’ anxiety and attitude towards the course is examined. Besides, the study also tried to determine the pre-service teachers’ beliefs regarding their self-sufficiency in terms of doing a scientific research. The study was carried out the action research design as the basis. The sample of the study consisted of 27 pre-service teachers. They were in the third grade of the undergraduate program of Elementary Science Education in the fall semester of the school year of 2013-2014 in a state university in the northwest of Turkey, and they received the course on “Scientific Research Methods”. The implementation continued for 14 weeks with 2 hours a week. The study data was collected with the help of a questionnaire including nine open-ended questions in order to identify the opinions of the pre-service teachers about the course on Scientific Research Methods. A success test including short-answer, true-false, multiple-choice and open-ended questions is used in order to determine whether the course content was learnt by pre-service teachers. According to the research results, the pre-service teachers that took this course had decreased levels of anxiety towards doing scientific research. This study identified that the pre-service teachers have a medium-level attitude towards doing research. They stated that this course was important and necessary. It was found that this course ensured that the pre-service teachers gained some skills such as article writing, article review, and literature review

The aim of this study was to develop a Scientific Process Skills Test (SPST) in the context of Matter and its Nature. It was investigated whether there was a predictive effect of demographical features and participating out-of-school learning opportunities across the 7th and 8th grade students' Scientific Process Skill (SPS) levels. Quantitative research methods were used in this study. Data were collected from 289 middle school students for the validity and reliability of the test. The SPST consisted of 30 items and entailed three sub-dimensions (basic scientific process skills, causal scientific process skills and experimental scientific process skills). The reliability coefficient of the test was calculated using the KR-20 formula and was found to be 0.84. The SPST was applied to 472 middle school students with the aim of determining whether there is a predictive effect of gender, grade level, school location, parent's education level and participation in out-of-school learning opportunities across the 7th and 8th grade students' SPS levels. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine the effects of demographical features and out-of-school learning opportunities on students' SPS levels. As a result, it was determined that the grade level, gender or mother's education level were important predictor variables that affect middle school students' SPS levels. It was also determined that out-of-school learning opportunities such as participating in science fairs, designing projects or reading scientific journals had an important predictive effect on students' SPS levels
