    Minimizing Psychological Distress and Promoting Resilience During Quarantine: Piloting the Town Hall Model

    Quarantine and isolation are important public health strategies for containing highly hazardous communicable disease outbreaks, particularly when vaccines and effective treatments are unavailable. Despite their effectiveness in disease containment, both quarantine and isolation, whether home- or facility-based, can lead to negative psychological outcomes in the short and long term. This article describes a novel, evidence-informed pilot intervention to prevent psychological deterioration during facility-based quarantine and isolation. Designed for the National Quarantine Unit during the repatriation of 15 American passengers exposed to COVID-19 on a cruise ship, the model incorporates findings from several areas of research, including factors that increase stress during quarantine and isolation, resources and competencies thought to contribute to individual resilience, and the role of social support in buffering stress. The high participation rate, in connection with positive feedback from guests, suggests that the pilot intervention holds promise for mitigating the potentially damaging psychological effects of facility-based quarantine and isolation

    Social and Nonsocial Decentration in Hearing-Impaired and Normal Hearing Children

    Tweny-three hearing-impaired and 25 normally hearing children between 7 and 14 years of age were administered a social decentration task, a nonsocial decentration task (a set of conservation problems), and a test of nonverbal intelligence. Although the two groups did not differ with respect to nonverbal intelligence, the hearing-impaired children obtained significantlv lower scores than their normally hearing peers on both the social and nonsocial decentration measures. Within both groups, there was a significant positive correlation between social decentration and nonsocial decentration, which is consistent with Piaget\u27s contention that centration-decentration is a cognitive dimension underlying the structuring of both social and nonsocial content. Within the hearing-impaired sample, degree of hearing loss was not associated with either social or nonsocial decentration

    Loss of Wdfy3 in mice alters cerebral cortical neurogenesis reflecting aspects of the autism pathology.

    Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are complex and heterogeneous developmental disabilities affecting an ever-increasing number of children worldwide. The diverse manifestations and complex, largely genetic aetiology of ASDs pose a major challenge to the identification of unifying neuropathological features. Here we describe the neurodevelopmental defects in mice that carry deleterious alleles of the Wdfy3 gene, recently recognized as causative in ASDs. Loss of Wdfy3 leads to a regionally enlarged cerebral cortex resembling early brain overgrowth described in many children on the autism spectrum. In addition, affected mouse mutants display migration defects of cortical projection neurons, a recognized cause of epilepsy, which is significantly comorbid with autism. Our analysis of affected mouse mutants defines an important role for Wdfy3 in regulating neural progenitor divisions and neural migration in the developing brain. Furthermore, Wdfy3 is essential for cerebral expansion and functional organization while its loss-of-function results in pathological changes characteristic of ASDs

    Behavioral clusters and coronary heart disease risk

    The purpose of the present study was to empirically identify individuals who differed in their patterns of components derived from the structured interview (SI), and to evaluate whether individuals characterized by the different patterns varied in terms of their risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). The present study represents a reanalysis of data from the Western Collaborative Group Study in which components of Type A were individually related to risk for CHD. Subgroups of individuals who differed in the patterns of their component scores were identified by means of cluster analytic techniques and were found to vary in their risk of CHD. As expected, a pattern of characteristics in which hostility was salient was found to be predictive of CHD. Moreover, another pattern of characteristics that appears to reflect pressured, controlling, socially dominant behavior in which hostility was not salient also was found to be predictive of CHD. Further, two patterns of characteristics were identified that were unrelated to CHD risk. Finally, two patterns of characteristics were identified that were related to reduced risk of CHD. Overall, these results suggest that future research should investigate variables in addition to hostility in regard to risk for and protection from CHD

    Unfolding dynamics of proteins under applied force

    Understanding the mechanisms of protein folding is a major challenge that is being addressed effectively by collaboration between researchers in the physical and life sciences. Recently, it has become possible to mechanically unfold proteins by pulling on their two termini using local force probes such as the atomic force microscope. Here, we present data from experiments in which synthetic protein polymers designed to mimic naturally occurring polyproteins have been mechanically unfolded. For many years protein folding dynamics have been studied using chemical denaturation, and we therefore firstly discuss our mechanical unfolding data in the context of such experiments and show that the two unfolding mechanisms are not the same, at least for the proteins studied here. We also report unexpected observations that indicate a history effect in the observed unfolding forces of polymeric proteins and explain this in terms of the changing number of domains remaining to unfold and the increasing compliance of the lengthening unstructured polypeptide chain produced each time a domain unfolds

    The Effects of Time Pressure on Social Cognitive Problem-Solving by Aggressive and Nonaggressive Boys

    This study evaluated the effects of one potential source of arousal, namely time pressure, on the attributions made and the solutions generated in hypothetical social problem situations by aggressive and nonaggressive boys. It was predicted that time pressure would be more disruptive to the social information-processing of aggressive boys as compared to their nonaggressive peers. Thirty aggressive and 32 nonaggressive third- and fourth-grade boys were administered attribution and solution generation tasks under both untimed and time pressured conditions. Level of arousal in both conditions was assessed by experimenter observation and subject self-report. The time pressure condition re-suited in greater arousal than the untimed condition across all subjects. The predicted interaction between group and condition did not reach statistical significance; however, there was a trend suggesting that the aggressive group made more hostile attributions in the time pressured as compared to the untimed condition, whereas the nonaggressive group did not differ between the two conditions. On the solution generation measure, the time pressure condition resulted in all subjects producing a greater number of solutions overall, more types of solutions, and proportionally more aggressive solutions. Results are discussed in terms of the influence of arousal on social information-processing

    Why Effective Medium Theory Fails in Granular Materials

    Experimentally it is known that the bulk modulus, K, and shear modulus, \mu, of a granular assembly of elastic spheres increase with pressure, p, faster than the p^1/3 law predicted by effective medium theory (EMT) based on Hertz-Mindlin contact forces. To understand the origin of these discrepancies, we perform numerical simulations of granular aggregates under compression. We show that EMT can describe the moduli pressure dependence if one includes the increasing number of grain-grain contacts with p. Most important, the affine assumption (which underlies EMT), is found to be valid for K(p) but breakdown seriously for \mu(p). This explains why the experimental and numerical values of \mu(p) are much smaller than the EMT predictions.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, http://polymer.bu.edu/~hmaks

    Gelation as arrested phase separation in short-ranged attractive colloid-polymer mixtures

    We present further evidence that gelation is an arrested phase separation in attractive colloid-polymer mixtures, based on a method combining confocal microscopy experiments with numerical simulations recently established in {\bf Nature 453, 499 (2008)}. Our results are independent of the form of the interparticle attractive potential, and therefore should apply broadly to any attractive particle system with short-ranged, isotropic attractions. We also give additional characterization of the gel states in terms of their structure, inhomogeneous character and local density.Comment: 6 figures, to be published in J. Phys. Condens.     Long-Term Assessment of the Effects of COVID-19 and Isolation Care on Survivor Disability and Anxiety

    We conducted an assessment of disability, anxiety, and other life impacts of COVID-19 and isolation care in a unique cohort of individuals. These included both community admissions to a university hospital as well as some of the earliest international aeromedical evacuees. Among an initial 16 COVID-19 survivors that were interviewed 6-12 months following their admission into isolation care, perception of their isolation care experience was related to their reporting of long-term consequences. However, anxiety and disability assessed with standard scores had no relationship with each other. Both capture of the isolation care experience and caution relying on single scoring systems for assessing long-term consequences in survivors are important considerations for on-going and future COVID-19 and other pandemic survivor research
