    Standard accounts of the ad baculum locate its fallaciousness either in irrelevance or dialogue shift. Such accounts, however, fail to explain its persuasiveness. This paper offers a new account where the real target of an ad baculum is an audience downstream from the initial ad baculum exchange. This means that the ad baculum consists in misrepresenting the quality of evidence by means of the forced adoption of a particular standpoint

    Effect of Dimple Pattern on the Suppression of Boundary Layer Separation on a Low Pressure Turbine Blade

    Three dimple patterns were investigated to ascertain their relative effectiveness on controlling boundary layer separation from a low-pressure turbine blade. The three cases included a single row of dimples at 65% of the axial chord with 2.22 cm spacing, a single row of dimples at 65% of the axial chord with 4.44 cm spacing, and a two-row staggered pattern with rows at 65% and 76% of the axial chord with 4.44 cm spacing. The multiple row case was such that the center of the upstream dimple set at the midpoint between two downstream dimples. The dimple spacing was measured center-on-center. Each of the dimple patterns was studied and compared to an unmodified blade at axial chord Reynolds numbers based on inlet velocity of 25k, 45k, and 100k. Experimental data was collected in a low-speed, draw down wind tunnel containing a linear turbine cascade of 8 Pak-B blades. Measurements of surface pressure, boundary layer parameters, wake velocity, and total pressure losses were made to examine the flow. No dimple pattern dramatically outperformed the others. Each of the dimple patterns studied improved the average total pressure loss coefficient by 34% for Re 25k and 1% Tu. Complementing the experimental effort was a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics study. Four models were built and analyzed. The models included an unmodified blade, blades with dimples at 65% of the axial chord with 2 cm or 4 cm spacing, respectively, and a multiple row case consisting of dimples at 65% and 76% of the axial chord with 2 cm spacing. Again the upstream dimple set at the midpoint between two downstream dimples. The computational fluid dynamics study provided detailed flow visualization in and around the dimples as well as a comparison to experimental data for solver verification. It was shown that the computational and experimental results showed similar trends in wake loss and boundary layer traverses

    Correlation between Subjective Nasal Patency and Intranasal Airflow Distribution

    Objectives (1) Analyze the relationship between intranasal airflow distribution and subjective nasal patency in healthy and nasal airway obstruction (NAO) cohorts using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). (2) Determine whether intranasal airflow distribution is an important objective measure of airflow sensation that should be considered in future NAO virtual surgery planning. Study Design Cross-sectional. Setting Academic tertiary medical center and academic dental clinic. Subjects and Methods Three-dimensional models of nasal anatomy were created based on computed tomography scans of 15 patients with NAO and 15 healthy subjects and used to run CFD simulations of nasal airflow and mucosal cooling. Subjective nasal patency was quantified with a visual analog scale (VAS) and the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE). Regional distribution of nasal airflow (inferior, middle, and superior) was quantified in coronal cross sections in the narrowest nasal cavity. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to quantify the correlation between subjective scores and regional airflows. Results Healthy subjects had significantly higher middle airflow than patients with NAO. Subjective nasal patency had no correlation with inferior and superior airflows but a high correlation with middle airflow (|r| = 0.64 and |r| = 0.76 for VAS and NOSE, respectively). Anterior septal deviations tended to shift airflow inferiorly, reducing middle airflow and reducing mucosal cooling in some patients with NAO. Conclusion Reduced middle airflow correlates with the sensation of nasal obstruction, possibly due to a reduction in mucosal cooling in this region. Further research is needed to elucidate the role of intranasal airflow distribution in the sensation of nasal airflow

    Prevalence of and factors associated with violations of a campus smoke-free policy: A cross-sectional survey of undergraduate students on a university campus in the USA

Objective: The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of smoking behaviour on campus and to identify the key factors that influence adherence to a campus smoke-free policy. Design & participants: This study employed a cross-sectional, self-administered survey of undergraduate students at University of Mississippi. A random sample of all available undergraduate classes was recruited for data collection. Students were provided a survey that included questions on demographics, alcohol use, smoking status, policy awareness, policy attitudes, smoking attitudes, policy support, barriers to policy success and policy violations. Results: The prevalence of past 30-day smoking was 23%. More than 63% of current smokers report ever smoking on campus, but less than 10% ever received a warning or a ticket for their violation. Nearly all respondents (92.5%) reported witnessing someone smoking on campus, and 22% reported witnessing someone receiving a ticket. Barriers to policy success include lack of reminders about the policy, lack of support from students and University administrators, and insufficient fines. Smoking behaviour (OR: 7.96; 95% CI: 5.13 to 12.36), beliefs about policy adherence (OR: 0.52; 95% CI: 0.40 to 0.69), support for the policy (OR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.55 to 0.91) and attitudes against smoking behaviour (OR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.25 to 0.49) were all significantly associated with self-reported policy violations. Conclusions: This study found that violations of the campus smoke-free policy were fairly frequent and the policy has been largely ineffective, indicating a need for other interventions. Approaches to improve adherence to the policy should address barriers such as reminders about the policy, better policy enforcement and support from the administration
