    Quantum Voting and Violation of Gibbard-Satterthwaite's Impossibility Theorem

    In the realm of algorithmic economics, voting systems are evaluated and compared by examining the properties or axioms they satisfy. While this pursuit has yielded valuable insights, it has also led to seminal impossibility results such as Arrow's and Gibbard-Satterthwaite's Impossibility Theorems, which pose challenges in designing ideal voting systems. Enter the domain of quantum computing: recent advancements have introduced the concept of quantum voting systems, which have many potential applications including in security and blockchain. Building on recent works that bypass Arrow's Impossibility Theorem using quantum voting systems, our research extends Quantum Condorcet Voting (QCV) to counter the Gibbard-Satterthwaite Impossibility Theorem in a quantum setting. To show this, we introduce a quantum-specific notion of truthfulness, extend ideas like incentive compatibility and the purpose of onto to the quantum domain, and introduce new tools to map social welfare functions to social choice functions in this domain.Comment: 35 pages, 1 figure, 2 table

    Revitalizing Turtle Creek Park

    We current ENST 411 students, Abbey Jacoby, Michael Hardyway, Ethan Harm, and Casey Stephenson have chosen to work with Jim Knight, East Buffalo Township, the Merrill Linn Land and Waterways Conservancy, and many others in an attempt to revitalize Turtle Creek Park for a plethora of reasons. Three of us are majoring in biology, and two are majoring in environmental science, which makes much of the information and techniques relevant in Turtle Creek applicable to our courses of study. This project included heavy hands on work which allowed us students to leave a memorable and impactful influence on the Lewisburg community. Post-graduation, the Turtle Creek Project will provide a continued source of outdoor recreation and conservation for local species regardless of our presence on campus. In addition, several of us will be pursuing environmental studies and sciences careers after graduation, where we will use our skills and knowledge obtained from the Turtle Creek Park experience. Overall, the park revitalization project provided an opportunity to connect with the local natural ecosystem in ways we have not experienced before, and also allowed each of us to build unique connections to figures important in the field of conservation and environmental studies here in Pennsylvania

    Burning Surface Temperature Measurements of Propellants and Explosives using Phosphor Thermography

    Temperature measurements of propellants and explosives are necessary to create accurate models which lead to better understanding of energetic characteristics such as burning rate. Previous attempts at measuring surface temperatures of burning propellants and explosives using thermocouples have suffered from large uncertainty. Thermographic phosphor thermography employs ceramic powders called phosphors whose spectroscopic properties can be used to remotely and nearly non-intrusively measure temperature. Improved methods were developed for application of this technique to energetic materials to yield more accurate, two-dimensional temperature measurements. In this study, zinc oxide doped with gallium, a thermographic phosphor, was mixed into HMX and RDX powder, two propellant ingredients. These were excited by a laser while burning, and the resulting luminescence was captured by a high-speed camera. The ratio of the intensity of the luminescence at two wavelength bands was measured, and the corresponding temperature dependence was used to determine the surface temperature of the burning materials based on prior calibrations. High precision has been achieved, although further experiments must be performed to validate the accuracy of the data. Methods have been developed to achieve high resolution and more optimal signal strength for this application of phosphor thermography. The experimental data may lead to more accurate accepted values for reacting surface temperatures and improved modeling of these energetic materials

    Prevalence of and factors associated with violations of a campus smoke-free policy: A cross-sectional survey of undergraduate students on a university campus in the USA

Objective: The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of smoking behaviour on campus and to identify the key factors that influence adherence to a campus smoke-free policy. Design & participants: This study employed a cross-sectional, self-administered survey of undergraduate students at University of Mississippi. A random sample of all available undergraduate classes was recruited for data collection. Students were provided a survey that included questions on demographics, alcohol use, smoking status, policy awareness, policy attitudes, smoking attitudes, policy support, barriers to policy success and policy violations. Results: The prevalence of past 30-day smoking was 23%. More than 63% of current smokers report ever smoking on campus, but less than 10% ever received a warning or a ticket for their violation. Nearly all respondents (92.5%) reported witnessing someone smoking on campus, and 22% reported witnessing someone receiving a ticket. Barriers to policy success include lack of reminders about the policy, lack of support from students and University administrators, and insufficient fines. Smoking behaviour (OR: 7.96; 95% CI: 5.13 to 12.36), beliefs about policy adherence (OR: 0.52; 95% CI: 0.40 to 0.69), support for the policy (OR: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.55 to 0.91) and attitudes against smoking behaviour (OR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.25 to 0.49) were all significantly associated with self-reported policy violations. Conclusions: This study found that violations of the campus smoke-free policy were fairly frequent and the policy has been largely ineffective, indicating a need for other interventions. Approaches to improve adherence to the policy should address barriers such as reminders about the policy, better policy enforcement and support from the administration

    Study Protocol for a Stepped-Wedge Randomized Cookstove Intervention in Rural Honduras: Household Air Pollution and Cardiometabolic Health

    Growing evidence links household air pollution exposure from biomass-burning cookstoves to cardiometabolic disease risk. Few randomized controlled interventions of cookstoves (biomass or otherwise) have quantitatively characterized changes in exposure and indicators of cardiometabolic health, a growing and understudied burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Ideally, the solution is to transition households to clean cooking, such as with electric or liquefied petroleum gas stoves; however, those unable to afford or to access these options will continue to burn biomass for the foreseeable future. Wood-burning cookstove designs such as the Justa (incorporating an engineered combustion zone and chimney) have the potential to substantially reduce air pollution exposures. Previous cookstove intervention studies have been limited by stove types that did not substantially reduce exposures and/or by low cookstove adoption and sustained use, and few studies have incorporated community-engaged approaches to enhance the intervention
