Fixation of virgin lunar surface soil
Two systems are shown to be suitable for fixing loose particulate soils with a polymer film, without visually detectable disturbance of the soil particle spatial relationships. A two-component system is described, which uses a gas monomer condensible at the soil temperature and a gas phase catalyst acting to polymerize the monomer. A one-component system using a monomer which polymerizes spontaneously on and within the top few millimeters of the soil is also considered. The two-component system employs a simpler apparatus, but it operates over a narrower temperature range (approximately -40 to -10 C). Other two-component systems were identified which may operate at soil temperatures as high as +100 C, at relatively narrow temperature ranges of approximately 30 C. The one-component system was demonstrated to operate successfully with initial soil temperatures from -70 C or lower to +150 C
Indian Meal Moth Survivability in Stored Corn With Different Levels of Broken Kernels
Survivability of Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepi-doptera: Pyralidae), larvae fed a standard laboratory diet and whole corn with 0, 5 to 7, and 100% broken corn kernels, was assessed under laboratory conditions at 28o C, 65% relative humidity, and 14:10 h (L:D) photoperiod. A conventional yellow dent corn hybrid (about 3.9% oil content, dry basis) and a high-oil corn hybrid (about 7.7% oil content, dry basis) were tested. Survivability was measured as the percentage of pre-pupae, pupae, and adults observed at the end of the rearing period. For the standard laboratory diet, a mean of 97.5% larvae survived. Percentage of larval survival increased as the percentage of broken corn increased. Mean percentages of larval survival for the conventional yellow dent corn were 6.7, 63.8, and 80.0 for 0, 7, and 100% broken kernels, respectively. The mean percentages of larval survival for the high-oil corn hybrid were 28.3, 81.3, and 100.0 for 0, 5, and 100% broken kernels, respectively. Larval growth rate for high-oil corn was faster than for conventional corn. Results indicate that cleaning corn before storage could reduce P. interpunctella problems
Propellant material compatibility program and results
The effects of long-term (up to 10 years) contact of inert materials with earth-storable propellants were studied for the purpose of designing chemical propulsion system components that can be used for current as well as future planetary spacecraft. The primary experimental work, and results to date are reported. Investigations include the following propellants: hydrazine, hydrazine-hydrazine nitrate blends, monomethyl-hydrazine, and nitrogen tetroxide. Materials include: aluminum alloys, corrosion-resistant steels, and titanium alloys. More than 700 test specimen capsules were placed in long-term storage testing at 43 C in the special material compatibility facility. Abundances on the Main Sequence of Omega Centauri
Abundance ratios of carbon, nitrogen and strontium relative to iron,
calculated using spectrum synthesis techniques, are given for a sample of main
sequence and turnoff stars that belong to the globular cluster omega Centauri.
The variations of carbon, nitrogen and/or strontium show several different
abundance patterns as a function of [Fe/H]. The source of the
enhancements/depletions in carbon, nitrogen and/or strontium may be enrichment
from asymptotic giant branch stars of low (1--3 solar masses) and intermediate
(3--8 solar masses) mass. Massive rotating stars which produce excess nitrogen
without carbon and oxygen overabundances may also play a role. These abundances
enable different contributors to be considered and incorporated into the

A Unified Near Infrared Spectral Classification Scheme for T Dwarfs
A revised near infrared classification scheme for T dwarfs is presented,
based on and superseding prior schemes developed by Burgasser et al. and
Geballe et al., and defined following the precepts of the MK Process. Drawing
from two large spectroscopic libraries of T dwarfs identified largely in the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Two Micron All Sky Survey, nine primary
spectral standards and five alternate standards spanning spectral types T0 to
T8 are identified that match criteria of spectral character, brightness,
absence of a resolved companion and accessibility from both northern and
southern hemispheres. The classification of T dwarfs is formally made by the
direct comparison of near infrared spectral data of equivalent resolution to
the spectra of these standards. Alternately, we have redefined five key
spectral indices measuring the strengths of the major HO and CH bands
in the 1-2.5 micron region that may be used as a proxy to direct spectral
comparison. Two methods of determining T spectral type using these indices are
outlined and yield equivalent results. These classifications are also
equivalent to those from prior schemes, implying that no revision of existing
spectral type trends is required. The one-dimensional scheme presented here
provides a first step toward the observational characterization of the lowest
luminosity brown dwarfs currently known. Future extensions to incorporate
spectral variations arising from differences in photospheric dust content,
gravity and metallicity are briefly discussed. A compendium of all currently

Radio Sources in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. I. Radio Source Populations
We present the first results from a study of the radio continuum properties
of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, based on thirty 2dF fields
covering a total area of about 100 square degrees. About 1.5% of galaxies with
b(J) < 19.4 mag are detected as radio continuum sources in the NRAO VLA Sky
Survey (NVSS). Of these, roughly 40% are star-forming galaxies and 60% are
active galaxies (mostly low-power radio galaxies and a few Seyferts). The
combination of 2dFGRS and NVSS will eventually yield a homogeneous set of
around 4000 radio-galaxy spectra, which will be a powerful tool for studying
the distriibution and evolution of both AGN and starburst galaxies out to

Lesions mimicking lacrimal gland pleomorphic adenoma
Aim: To report a series of patients with lacrimal gland lesions simulating the clinicoradiological features of lacrimal gland pleomorphic adenoma (LGPA). Methods: Multicentre retrospective, interventional case series. Clinical records of all patients with lesions mimicking LGPA seen in five orbital units were reviewed. Results: The study included 14 patients (seven men and seven women) with a mean age of 50.9 years. The diagnosis of LGPA was made in all cases by experienced orbital surgeons, based on clinicoradiological features, and lacrimal gland excision was performed. Postoperative histology revealed lymphoma (four patients), chronic dacryoadenitis (three patients), adenoid cystic carcinoma (two patients), Sjogren's syndrome (two patients), cavernous haemangioma (one patient), benign lymphoid hyperplasia (one patient) and granulomatous dacryoadenitis (one patient). Comparison with the total number of histologically confirmed LGPA cases seen during the study period revealed that 22.6% of cases of suspected LGPA were misdiagnosed based on clinicoradiological criteria. Conclusions: Many different lesions may mimic the clinicoradiological features of LGPA. The accepted clinicoradiological criteria used for the diagnosis of LGPA have a high false-positive rate, even in experienced hands. The S2 VLBI Correlator: A Correlator for Space VLBI and Geodetic Signal Processing
We describe the design of a correlator system for ground and space-based
VLBI. The correlator contains unique signal processing functions: flexible LO
frequency switching for bandwidth synthesis; 1 ms dump intervals, multi-rate
digital signal-processing techniques to allow correlation of signals at
different sample rates; and a digital filter for very high resolution
cross-power spectra. It also includes autocorrelation, tone extraction, pulsar

Scalable Task-Based Algorithm for Multiplication of Block-Rank-Sparse Matrices
A task-based formulation of Scalable Universal Matrix Multiplication
Algorithm (SUMMA), a popular algorithm for matrix multiplication (MM), is
applied to the multiplication of hierarchy-free, rank-structured matrices that
appear in the domain of quantum chemistry (QC). The novel features of our
formulation are: (1) concurrent scheduling of multiple SUMMA iterations, and
(2) fine-grained task-based composition. These features make it tolerant of the
load imbalance due to the irregular matrix structure and eliminate all
artifactual sources of global synchronization.Scalability of iterative
computation of square-root inverse of block-rank-sparse QC matrices is
demonstrated; for full-rank (dense) matrices the performance of our SUMMA
formulation usually exceeds that of the state-of-the-art dense MM
