Guiding properties of a non-isothermal atmosphere for acoustic-gravity waves

    Get PDF
The propagation of pressure waves in a stratified, non-isothermal atmosphere is studied in the linear approximation. It is found that acoustic and acoustic-gravity waves can be horizontally guided by the effect of the Earth’s thermocline alone, under very mild conditions on the temperature gradient steepness. The effect of the Earth’s surface is also studied. Lamb’s modes associated with the rigid surface are, then, identified and their behaviour, as a function of the Earth’s position, is discussed. Finally, dissipation is included, and its effect is derived using a perturbation technique

A case of capecitabine-induced coronary microspasm in a patient with rectal cancer

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is the most frequently used chemotherapy agent concomitant with radiotherapy in the management of patients with rectal cancer. Capecitabine is an oral fluoropyrimidine that mimics the pharmaconkinetics of infusional 5-FU. This new drug is replacing 5-FU as a part of the combined-modality treatment of a number of gastrointestinal cancers. While cardiac events associated with the use of 5-FU are a well known side effect, capecitabine-induced cardiotoxicity has been only rarely reported. Here, we reviewed the case of a patient with rectal cancer who had a capecitabine-induced coronary vasospasm. The most prominent mutation of the dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase gene was also analyzed

This study aims to describe the experience of Swiss oncological patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. A national multi-center study including five hospitals covering the three main language regions of Switzerland was conducted between March and July 2021. Patients with melanoma, breast, lung, or colon cancer receiving active systemic anti-cancer treatment at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic were included. We conducted semi-structured telephone or onsite interviews alongside the administration of distress and resilience-validated questionnaires. Thematic analysis was performed for the qualitative data and descriptive statistics for the quantitative data. Sixty-two cancer patients with a mean age of 61 (SD=14) (58% female) were interviewed. Based on the interviews, we identified that the experience of having cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic was related to five dimensions: psychological, social, support, healthcare, and vaccination. Three themes transverse the five dimensions: (a) needs, (b) positive changes, and (c) phases of the pandemic. In general, patients did not experience delays or disruptions in their cancer treatment nor felt additionally burdened by the pandemic. Lockdown and isolation were reported as mixed experiences (positive and negative), and access to vaccination reassured patients against the risk of infection and instilled hope to return to normalcy. Additionally, we found low distress levels (M=2.9; SD=2.5) and high resilience scores (M=7; SD=1.3) in these patients. Swiss patients with cancer did not express major needs or disruptions in their care during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results identify the mixed experiences of patients and highlight the high resilience levels

Sociodemographic and behavioral factors associated with physical activity in Brazilian adolescents

    Get PDF
Background\ud Physical activity in adolescents is associated with short- and long-term health benefits. Physical activity can occur in various domains and is influenced by a complex network of factors. The aims of this study are 1) to describe the physical activity of Brazilian adolescents in physical education classes, during leisure time, and during active commuting and 2) to investigate the socio-demographic and behavioral factors associated with physical activity.\ud \ud \ud Methods\ud The representative sample included 109,104 Brazilian students in the final year of elementary school from 2,842 schools. The weekly frequency and duration of physical activity were assessed. A variety of socio-demographic and behavioral factors were studied. A multiple Poisson regression analysis was used to test for associations between physical activity and the socio-demographic and behavioral variables.\ud \ud \ud Results\ud Most of the students (97.0%) engaged in physical activity in at least one of the domains studied, especially physical education at school (81.7%) and leisure time physical activity (67.5%). However, only 29% of the adolescents reached the recommended level of physical activity. Among the adolescents who reached the minimum recommended time for physical activity, the various domains contributed the following proportions to total physical activity: leisure time physical activity (PR 12.5; 95% CI 11.17-13.97), active commuting (PR 1.63; 95% CI 1.59-1.67), and physical education at school (PR 1.36; 95% CI 1.29-1.44). The weekly frequency of all activities was greater among boys than among girls. Moreover, nearly two-thirds (61.8%) of students spent more than two hours per day engaging in sedentary behaviors; the prevalence of sedentary behaviors was similar between boys and girls (59.0 and 64.5%, respectively).\ud Total level of physical activity, leisure time physical activity, and active commuting were associated with higher nutritional scores.\ud \ud \ud Conclusions\ud Physical activity is important in any health promotion program. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in policies and interagency initiatives that promote all domains and to ensure that the general population helps determine the scope and design of such policies.USP/FM/PROAP CAPES/PROAP - 055/2013 Medicina Preventiva/\ud CGC.63.025.530/0018-5

Chirality scenario of the spin-glass ordering

Detailed account is given of the chirality scenario of experimental spin-glass transitions. In this scenario, the spin glass order of weakly anisotropic Heisenberg-like spin-glass magnets including canonical spin glasses are essentially chirality driven. Recent numerical and experimental results are discussed in conjunction with this scenario.Comment: Submitted to J. Phys. Soc. Japan "Special Issue on Frustration

Whey block freeze concentration aiming a functional fermented lactic beverage with the addition of probiotic and guabiroba pulp (Campomanesia xanthocarpa O. Berg), a native Brazilian fruit.

Abstract. The scientific importance involved in this study was the use of whey, a co-product of the cheese industry, and its performance during the freeze concentration process. Moreover, the best-concentrated whey from the freeze concentration process, about the total solids, proteins, and mineral contents, was used to prepare two functional fermented lactic beverages. Therefore, whey was subjected to the freeze concentration in blocks with gravitational thawing. Process performance indicated better yields and efficiency for the second stage of freeze concentration. Concentrated whey 2 was used to prepare two fermented lactic beverages added with probiotics: one without adding guabiroba pulp (control) and a beverage incorporated with 10% guabiroba pulp. Containing guabiroba pulp was not enough to modify the total solids, proteins, and mineral contents. However, it decreased pH values, changed the color to an orange hue, and decreased luminosity. The fermented lactic beverage added with probiotic and 10% guabiroba pulp showed 1.61× more phenolic compounds and an increase of 164% for each evaluated carotenoid content compared with the control beverage
