    Tetramethylenedisulfotetramine (CAS 80-12-6), commonly referred to as TETS, was first synthesized in 1933 as a condensation product of sulfamide and formaldehyde. TETS was subsequently used as a rodenticide until banned worldwide in 1991. TETS is, however, still available illegally, primarily in rural China, and is responsible for accidental and intentional poisonings that cause a significant number of human deaths annually. TETS induces convulsive seizures mediated by antagonism of Îł-amino-butyric acid (GABA)-mediated chloride channels. There are no known antidotes for TETS poisoning, and in cases of severe TETS intoxication that progress to status epilepticus, prognosis is poor even with aggressive anti-convulsant treatment

    Examining Emotion Perception Agreement in Live Music Performance

    Current music emotion recognition (MER) systems rely on emotion data averaged across listeners and over time to infer the emotion expressed by a musical piece, often neglecting time- and listener-dependent factors. These limitations can restrict the efficacy of MER systems and cause misjudgements. In a live music concert setting, fifteen audience members annotated perceived emotion in valence-arousal space over time using a mobile application. Analyses of inter-rater reliability yielded widely varying levels of agreement in the perceived emotions. A follow-up lab study to uncover the reasons for such variability was conducted, where twenty-one listeners annotated their perceived emotions through a recording of the original performance and offered open-ended explanations. Thematic analysis reveals many salient features and interpretations that can describe the cognitive processes. Some of the results confirm known findings of music perception and MER studies. Novel findings highlight the importance of less frequently discussed musical attributes, such as musical structure, performer expression, and stage setting, as perceived across different modalities. Musicians are found to attribute emotion change to musical harmony, structure, and performance technique more than non-musicians. We suggest that listener-informed musical features can benefit MER in addressing emotional perception variability by providing reasons for listener similarities and idiosyncrasies

    Chemical Trends in the Lattice Thermal Conductivity of Li(Ni, Mn, Co)O₂ (NMC) Battery Cathodes

    While the transport of ions and electrons in conventional Li-ion battery cathode materials is well understood, our knowledge of the phonon (heat) transport is still in its infancy. We present a first-principles theoretical investigation of the chemical trends in the phonon frequency dispersion, mode lifetimes, and thermal conductivity in the series of layered lithium transition-metal oxides Li(NixMnyCoz)O2 (x + y + z = 1). The oxidation and spin states of the transition metal cations are found to strongly influence the structural dynamics. Calculations of the thermal conductivity show that LiCoO2 has highest average conductivity of 45.9 W·m–1·K–1 at T = 300 K and the largest anisotropy, followed by LiMnO2 with 8.9 W·m–1·K–1 and LiNiO2 with 6.0 W·m–1·K–1. The much lower thermal conductivity of LiMnO2 and LiNiO2 is found to be due to 1–2 orders of magnitude shorter phonon lifetimes. We further model the properties of binary and ternary transition metal combinations to examine the possible effects of mixing on the thermal transport. These results serve as a guide to ongoing work on the design of multicomponent battery electrodes with more effective thermal management

    We compute the expectation value of the circular Wilson loop in N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with N_f=2N hypermultiplets.     We derive the spectrum and the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with long range hopping and spin exchange using a set of maximal-spin eigenstates. This spectrum confirms the recent conjecture that the asymptotic Bethe-ansatz spectrum is exact.
