Dissipative quantum systems modeled by a two level reservoir coupling
The coupling between a quantum dynamical system and a two-level system
reservoir is analysed within the framework of the Feynman-Vernon theory. We
stress the differences between this new reservoir and the well-known bath of
oscillators and show that, in order to obtain the Langevin equation for the
system of interest in the high temperature regime, we have to choose a spectral

Given its location, a delayed diagnosis is frequent and sometimes only made in an emergency context. The authors present a case of intestinal obstruction, where ultrasonography was pivotal in establishing a diagnosis. Improving the Knowledge on Seismogenic Sources in the Lower Tagus Valley for Seismic Hazard Purposes
The Lower Tagus Valley, that includes the metropolitan area of Lisbon, has been struck by several earthquakes which produced significant material damage and loss of lives. Their exact location remains unknown. Our goal is to shed some light into the seismogenic sources in the area using seismic reflection and geological data. In areas with no seismic coverage, potential-field data interpretation was carried out. Seismicity was overlaid to the potential seismogenic structures and high-resolution data was acquired in order to confirm which structures have been active into the Quaternary. Three major fault-zones affecting the Neogene were identified: V. F. Xira, Samora-Alcochete and Pinhal Novo. For the first fault, strong evidences suggest it is active. The other two fault-zones and other structures previously unknown can be correlated with several epicentres. Empirical relationships between maximum moment magnitude and fault area indicate that MW > 6.5 earthquakes can be expected for the larger structures
Circuit theory for decoherence in superconducting charge qubits
Based on a network graph analysis of the underlying circuit, a quantum theory
of arbitrary superconducting charge qubits is derived. Describing the
dissipative elements of the circuit with a Caldeira-Leggett model, we calculate
the decoherence and leakage rates of a charge qubit. The analysis includes
decoherence due to a dissipative circuit element such as a voltage source or
the quasiparticle resistances of the Josephson junctions in the circuit. The
theory presented here is dual to the quantum circuit theory for superconducting
flux qubits. In contrast to spin-boson models, the full Hilbert space structure
of the qubit and its coupling to the dissipative environment is taken into
account. Moreover, both self and mutual inductances of the circuit are fully

Entanglement versus Quantum Discord in Two Coupled Double Quantum Dots
We study the dynamics of quantum correlations of two coupled double quantum
dots containing two excess electrons. The dissipation is included through the
contact with an oscillator bath. We solve the Redfield master equation in order
to determine the dynamics of the quantum discord and the entanglement of
formation. Based on our results, we find that the quantum discord is more
resistant to dissipation than the entanglement of formation for such a system.
We observe that this characteristic is related to whether the oscillator bath
is common to both qubits or not and to the form of the interaction Hamiltonian.
Moreover, our results show that the quantum discord might be finite even for

Specificity and performance evaluation of a novel RNA-FISH probe for the identification of Rhodotorula sp.
To distinguish Rhodotorula sp., from other
microorganisms that produce the same type of alterations on CH materials, proper identification methods must be applied.
RNA-fluorescence and in situ hybridization (RNA-FISH) has the potential to specifically identify the target microorganism
of interest in complex microbial communities (it is based on hybridization of fluorescently-labeled oligonucleotide probes
targeting to specific regions of the ribosomal RNA). Thus, the aim of this study was to design a novel genus specific RNAFISH probe against Rhodotorula sp., and to evaluate its specificity and performance both in silico and experimentally. This

Localization on short-range potentials in dissipative quantum mechanics
In this Letter the problem of the existence of a state localized on a weak
short-range attractive potential in the presence of dissipation is considered.
It is shown that, contrary to the pure quantum case, a localized state is
produced in any number of dimensions, while in low dimensions dissipation leads
to much stronger localization. The results have physical implications for the
dissipative dynamics of objects such as heavy particles in Fermi liquids and

An alternative approach for the dynamics of polarons in one dimension
We developed a new method based on functional integration to treat the
dynamics of polarons in one-dimensional systems. We treat the acoustical and
the optical case in an unified manner, showing their differences and
similarities. The mobility and diffusion coefficients are calculated in the

Measurement induced quantum-classical transition
A model of an electrical point contact coupled to a mechanical system
(oscillator) is studied to simulate the dephasing effect of measurement on a
quantum system. The problem is solved at zero temperature under conditions of
strong non-equilibrium in the measurement apparatus. For linear coupling
between the oscillator and tunneling electrons, it is found that the oscillator
dynamics becomes damped, with the effective temperature determined by the
voltage drop across the junction. It is demonstrated that both the quantum
heating and the quantum damping of the oscillator manifest themselves in the
