Calculation of laminar heat transfer to the windward surfaces of straight wing shuttle vehicles at high angle of attack and with yaw

    Get PDF
Calculations of laminar heat transfer to windward wing and body surfaces of a straight wing MSC orbiter have been made at high angles of attack and with yaw. The predictions of heat transfer made by swept cylinder theory generally agree with measurements in areas free of external flow interference. An optimum elliptic cross section was then determined using swept cylinder theory for an aerodynamically heated windward body surface in radiation equilibrium

A brief review of airline meteorological/flight planning is presented. The effects of variations in meteorological parameters upon flight and operational costs are reviewed. Flight path planning through the use of meteorological information is briefly discussed

Matching of analytical and numerical solutions for neutron stars of arbitrary rotation

We demonstrate the results of an attempt to match the two-soliton analytical solution with the numerically produced solutions of the Einstein field equations, that describe the spacetime exterior of rotating neutron stars, for arbitrary rotation. The matching procedure is performed by equating the first four multipole moments of the analytical solution to the multipole moments of the numerical one. We then argue that in order to check the effectiveness of the matching of the analytical with the numerical solution we should compare the metric components, the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit (RISCOR_{ISCO}), the rotation frequency Ωdϕdt\Omega\equiv\frac{d\phi}{dt} and the epicyclic frequencies Ωρ,  Ωz\Omega_{\rho},\;\Omega_z. Finally we present some results of the comparison.Comment: Contribution at the 13th Conference on Recent Developments in Gravity (NEB XIII), corrected typo in M4M_4 of eq. 5 of the published versio

WordPress+Qualtrics: A Plugin Supporting Research and New Pedagogy to Develop Personal Sustainability via 360° Evaluation

Fostering deep and meaningful self-reflection that leads to action, growth, and personal change among students challengesprofessors of large classes. Over 280 students in a single lecture course on critical thinking were asked to take part in a selfanalysisand also were provided multisource (360°) feedback. The combination of personalized feedback from the self andfrom known others appears to facilitate processes related to self-insight and developmental goal setting. This pedagogicalapproach would not have been possible without the development of software integrating WordPress, a popular, free, opensourcecontent management system (CMS), with Qualtrics, an online survey tool. This paper describes how this technologyserved both as a pedagogical tool, as well as a research tool

The Meaning and Purpose of Quotation and Stylistic Reference In Hans Werner Henze\u27s Requiem: Nine Sacred Concertos For Piano Solo, Trumpet Concertante, and Large Chamber Orchestra (1990-92)

    Get PDF
Quotation and stylistic reference are important communicative devices in the musical language of Hans Werner Henze that serve as a means of expression in his multilayered approach to composition. This study examines the central role that quotation and reference play in Hans Werner Henze\u27s Requiem: Nine Sacred Concertos for piano solo, trumpet concertante, and large chamber orchestra (1990-92). While some studies have identified selected references, their primary focus has been on the work\u27s pitch organization and formal plan. This study instead considers Henze\u27s unique approach to quotation and reference. In addition to interviews with the composer, Henze\u27s own writings are used to shed light on his thoughts about music, events in his life, and socio-political ideas that were important in the shaping of the work. The result is a Requiem without words that is nonetheless a highly personal, distinctly humanistic interpretation of the Mass for the Dead

Measurement of Heat Transfer in the Turbulent Boundary Layer on a Flat Plate in a Supersonic Flow and Comparison with Skin Friction Results

    Get PDF
Local heat-transfer rates on the surface of a heated flat plate at zero incidence to an air stream flowing at Mach numbers of 1.69 and 2.27 are presented. The Reynolds number range for both Mach numbers was 1 million to 10 million. Surface temperatures were maintained near recovery temperature. It was found that the variation of heat transfer with Mach number was in agreement with previously reported variations of directly measured skin friction with Mach number on unheated bodies. The variation with Mach number of the average skin coefficient, as determined from impact-pressure surveys, was in agreement with that from other momentum loss measurements but differed from the variation obtained from directly measured skin friction as reported by others.
