Metabrain for Embedded Cognition (MBEC)
This study presents the application of Hidden Markov Models (HMM) to determine specialized features without expert input. Specifically, the application of such a method for classification of high multi-path fading is targeted, for demonstrating the feasibility of such an approach. This is the first step in the development of a meta-brain for embedded cognition (M-BEC) suite that can be used to apply machine learning to various communication systems at NASA GRC. The project explores the concept of fading and how it affects communication systems in a negative way. Currently, supervised learning methods are used to study the effects of fading on space links. However, such models rely on expert features to make predictions as to the state of a link and whether fading is present. This project offers the possibility of having the HMM learn what characteristics are important and make predictions based on those characteristics. This project explores Hidden Markov Models, their theory and applications to various problems, as well as the underlying equations and assumptions. A preliminary result is presented and recommendations are made as to the use of such an approach for communications systems
Averages of b-hadron Properties at the End of 2005
This article reports world averages for measurements on b-hadron properties
obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFAG) using the available results
as of at the end of 2005. In the averaging, the input parameters used in the
various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and all known
correlations are taken into account. The averages include lifetimes, neutral
meson mixing parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays, branching fractions
of B meson decays to final states with open charm, charmonium and no charm, and
measurements related to CP asymmetries
Higher analogues of the discrete-time Toda equation and the quotient-difference algorithm
The discrete-time Toda equation arises as a universal equation for the
relevant Hankel determinants associated with one-variable orthogonal
polynomials through the mechanism of adjacency, which amounts to the inclusion
of shifted weight functions in the orthogonality condition. In this paper we
extend this mechanism to a new class of two-variable orthogonal polynomials
where the variables are related via an elliptic curve. This leads to a `Higher
order Analogue of the Discrete-time Toda' (HADT) equation for the associated
Hankel determinants, together with its Lax pair, which is derived from the
relevant recurrence relations for the orthogonal polynomials. In a similar way
as the quotient-difference (QD) algorithm is related to the discrete-time Toda
equation, a novel quotient-quotient-difference (QQD) scheme is presented for
the HADT equation. We show that for both the HADT equation and the QQD scheme,
there exists well-posed -periodic initial value problems, for almost all
\s\in\Z^2. From the Lax-pairs we furthermore derive invariants for
corresponding reductions to dynamical mappings for some explicit examples.Comment: 38 page
Variation in Seagrass-Associated Macroinvertebrate Communities Along the Gulf Coast of Peninsular Florida: An Exploration of Patterns and Ecological Consequences
Seagrasses form vast meadows of structurally complex habitat that support faunal communities with greater numbers of species and individuals than nearby unstructured habitats. The Gulf coast of peninsular Florida represents a natural laboratory ideally suited to the study of processes that shape seagrass-associated invertebrate and fish communities within meadows of a single species of seagrass, Thalassia testudinum. This suitability arises from a pronounced structural and chemical gradient that exists over ecologically relevant spatial and temporal scales, as revealed by extensive monitoring of water quality and seagrass. We hypothesized that seagrass-associated invertebrate communities would vary across five estuarine systems spread along a spatial gradient in phosphorus concentration, an important driver of seagrass and phytoplankton growth in this region. The quantitative results based on data acquired at 25 stations (75 samples, 52,086 specimens, and 161 taxa) indicated that each of the five estuarine systems were distinct with regard to species composition and differences among systems were driven by abundant or relatively common species. In addition, we found evidence to indicate food webs in seagrass meadows along this gradient may differ, especially in the relative dominance of algal grazers and predatory invertebrates. These changes in species composition and trophic roles could be driven by phosphorus directly, through increases in rates of primary production with higher concentrations of phosphorus, or indirectly, through nutrient-mediated changes in the physical structure of the seagrass canopy. Our results suggest that differences in the habitat created by T. testudinum under differing phosphorus supplies lead to ecologically significant shifts in macroinvertebrate communities
Averaging lifetimes for B hadron species
The measurement of the lifetimes of the individual B species are of great interest. Many of these measurements are well below the 10 level of precision. However, in order to reach the precision necessary to test the current theoretical predictions, the results from different experiments need to be averaged. Therefore, the relevant systematic uncertainties of each measurement need to be well defined in order to understand the correlations between the results from different experiments. \par In this paper we discuss the dominant sources of systematic errors which lead to correlations between the different measurements. We point out problems connected with the conventional approach of combining lifetime data and discuss methods which overcome these problems
In vivo blockade of pemphigus vulgaris acantholysis by inhibition of intracellular signal transduction cascades
BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune disease characterized by mucocutaneous intraepithelial blisters and pathogenic autoantibodies against desmoglein 3. The mechanism of blister formation in pemphigus has not been defined; however, in vitro data suggest a role for activation of intracellular signalling cascades. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the contribution of these signalling pathways to the mechanism of PV IgG-induced acantholysis in vivo. METHODS: We used the passive transfer mouse model. Mice were injected with IgG fractions of sera from a patient with PV, with or without pretreatment with inhibitors of proteins that mediate intracellular signalling cascades. RESULTS: Inhibitors of tyrosine kinases, phospholipase C, calmodulin and the serine/threonine kinase protein kinase C prevented PV IgG-induced acantholysis in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: These observations strongly support the role of intracellular signalling cascades in the molecular mechanism of PV IgG-induced acantholysis
