A comparison of forensic toolkits and mass market data recovery applications
Digital forensic application suites are large, expensive, complex software products, offering a range of functions to assist in the investigation of digital artifacts. Several authors have raised concerns as to the reliability of evidence derived from these products. This is of particular concern, given that many forensic suites are closed source and therefore can only be subject to black box evaluation. In addition, many of the individual functions
integrated into forensic suites are available as commercial stand-alone products, typically at a much lower cost, or even free. This paper reports research which compared (rather than individually evaluated) the data recovery function of two forensic suites and three stand alone `non-forensic' commercial applications. The research demonstrates that, for this function at least, the commercial data recovery tools provide comparable performance to that of the forensic software suites. In addition, the research demonstrates that there is some variation in results presented by all of the data recovery tools
Invisible Pixels Are Dead, Long Live Invisible Pixels!
Privacy has deteriorated in the world wide web ever since the 1990s. The
tracking of browsing habits by different third-parties has been at the center
of this deterioration. Web cookies and so-called web beacons have been the
classical ways to implement third-party tracking. Due to the introduction of
more sophisticated technical tracking solutions and other fundamental
transformations, the use of classical image-based web beacons might be expected
to have lost their appeal. According to a sample of over thirty thousand images
collected from popular websites, this paper shows that such an assumption is a
fallacy: classical 1 x 1 images are still commonly used for third-party
tracking in the contemporary world wide web. While it seems that ad-blockers
are unable to fully block these classical image-based tracking beacons, the
paper further demonstrates that even limited information can be used to
accurately classify the third-party 1 x 1 images from other images. An average
classification accuracy of 0.956 is reached in the empirical experiment. With
these results the paper contributes to the ongoing attempts to better
understand the lack of privacy in the world wide web, and the means by which

What makes Cryptococcus neoformans a pathogen?
Life-threatening infections caused by the encapsulated fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans have been increasing steadily over the past 10 years because of the onset of AIDS and the expanded use of immunosuppressive drugs. Intricate host-organism interactions make the full understanding of pathogenicity and virulence of C. neoformans difficult. We discuss the current knowledge of the characteristics C. neoformans must possess to enter the host and establish progressive disease: basic growth requirements and virulence factors, such as the polysaccharide capsule; shed products of the organism; melanin production; mannitol secretion; superoxide dismutase; proteases; and phospholipases
Costs of Collective Decisions, Choice of Tax Base, and Median Voter Equilibrium
This note examines the relationship between public expenditure growth and tax base elasticity in the context of the median voter model. If the revenue elasticity of the tax base and the median voter's income elasticity of demand for public services are not identical, the automatic increase in public revenue resulting from an increase in voter income will not match the median voter's increase in demand for public service expenditures. If adjusting tax rates is costly, the short-run rate of growth ofpublic expenditures will be biased in the direction of the automatic growth in tax revenue rather than being tied directly to changes in the median voter's demand for public services. The welfare loss occasioned by these positive decision-making costs can be reduced by choosing that tax base for which revenue elasticity most closely corresponds to income elasticity and also by evaluating tax rates in a multiperiod context at the time they are imposed.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

Investigating collaborative annotation on slate PCs
Mobile reading is becoming evermore popular with the introduction of eInk devices such as the Kindle, as well as the many reading applications available on slate PCs and cellular handsets. The portable nature and large storage capacity of these modern mobile devices is making reading a more technology orientated activity. One aspect of mobile reading that has been given surprisingly little attention is collective reading - which is a common activity with paper documents. We investigate the support of group reading using slate PCs, focussing on collective annotation. In the past, desktop PCs have proved inferior in many ways for reading, when compared to paper. Notably, user evaluations of our new system, BuddyBooks, demonstrate that the slate PC form factor can, in contrast, provide advantages for group reading. While annotation practices change with the new format, coordinating within the group can be improved when touch-interaction is carefully exploited
Kinetic pathways of multi-phase surfactant systems
The relaxation following a temperature quench of two-phase (lamellar and
sponge phase) and three-phase (lamellar, sponge and micellar phase) samples,
has been studied in an SDS/octanol/brine system. In the three-phase case we
have observed samples that are initially mainly sponge phase with lamellar and
micellar phase on the top and bottom respectively. Upon decreasing temperature
most of the volume of the sponge phase is replaced by lamellar phase. During
the equilibriation we have observed three regimes of behaviour within the
sponge phase: (i) disruption in the sponge texture, then (ii) after the sponge
phase homogenises there is a lamellar nucleation regime and finally (iii) a
bizarre plume connects the lamellar phase with the micellar phase. The
relaxation of the two-phase sample proceeds instead in two stages. First
lamellar drops nucleate in the sponge phase forming a onion `gel' structure.
Over time the lamellar structure compacts while equilibriating into a two phase
lamellar/sponge phase sample. We offer possible explanatioins for some of these
observations in the context of a general theory for phase kinetics in systems

Co-reading: investigating collaborative group reading.
Collaborative reading, or co-reading as we call it, is ubiquitous—it occurs, for instance, in classrooms, book-clubs, and in less coordinated ways through mass media. While individual digital reading has been the subject of much investigation, research into co-reading is scarce. We report a two-phase field study of group reading to identify an initial set of user requirements. A co-reading interface is then designed that facilitates the coordination of group reading by providing temporary ‘Point-out’ markers to indicate specific locations within documents. A user study compared this new system with collaborative reading on paper, with a positive outcome; the differences in user behavior between paper and the new interface reveal intriguing insights into user needs and the potential benefits of digital media for co-reading
The Electronic and Superconducting Properties of Oxygen-Ordered MgB2 compounds of the form Mg2B3Ox
Possible candidates for the Mg2B3Ox nanostructures observed in bulk of
polycrystalline MgB2 (Ref.1) have been studied using a combination of
Z-contrast imaging, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and
first-principles calculations. The electronic structures, phonon modes, and
electron phonon coupling parameters are calculated for two oxygen-ordered MgB2
compounds of composition Mg2B3O and Mg2B3O2, and compared with those of MgB2.
We find that the density of states for both Mg2B3Ox structures show very good
agreement with EELS, indicating that they are excellent candidates to explain
the observed coherent oxygen precipitates. Incorporation of oxygen reduces the
transition temperature and gives calculated TC values of 18.3 K and 1.6 K for
Mg2B3O and Mg2B3O2, respectively.Comment: Submitted to PR
Aortic Embolism in Cats: Prevalence, Surgical Treatment and Electrocardiography
Aortic embolism (caudal arterial thromboembolism) was diagnosed over a four-year-period in 14 out of 2,000 cats in a hospital clinic population (7/1,000). Including 35 cases reported in the literature, the average age of 50 cats with aortic embolism was 6-8 years (range one to 16 years). Of these, 37 were males and 13 were females. Endocarditis with thrombosis was the most frequently observed cause of aortic embolism, although aortic arteriosclerosis was reported in one cat.
The clinical and pathological features of aortic embolism in five cats are described in this report. In electrocardiograms of four of these, arrhythmias or conduction disturbances were recorded. Intact emboli in the aorta and external iliac arteries were removed by abdominal aortic embolectomy in two cats within hours after the onset of posterior paralysis. Death resulted in one case from cardiac complications and in the other by euthanasia at the later date because of probably recurrent aortic embolism. In the other three cases, multiple sections of the aorta with the embolus in situ were examined, but no microscopic changes in the aortic wall were noted.
Surgical removal of an aortic embolus is technically and economically feasible and is considered the treatment of choice when treatment is requested within hours after the onset of clinical signs. Although embolectomy can yield a good immediate result; the long range justification for such therapy requires further evaluation, since recurrent embolization may develop
