Samsung Electronics Corporation is a fast growing and expanding company. Since its foundation in 1969, it was constantly exploring new markets and gaining market share. It became fast a respectable competitor even for the giants in the market, such as Intel, IBM, Motorola and Sony. Producing high quality at a low cost in Korea and China, Samsung Electronics scores high in the comparison between quality and price. [Jl] [J2] Using successful strategies, including for example Economy of Scale and Diversification, Samsung Electronics became the second fast growing company of that kind in the world (after Safeway), is market leader in semiconductor manufacturing such as DRAM and SRAM C\u27[G in flash memoryl and color monitors, and #2 in manufacturing micro wave ovens, just to claim a few. To make this more clear with a few numbers, the sales growth in the fiscal year reached 103.0%, the net income growth even a percentage of as much as 164.0%. [Jl] This paper is supposed to present the strategies which are understood to be responsive for the astonishingly positive and consistent development of Samsung Electronics. It covers an overview of Samsung Electronics\u27 history to show the development to the state of the art, a discussion of different strategies since 1993 which made the company that successful in the last few years, focusing on product, manufacturing and technology growth, R&D and venture investments, the management style, international brand management, the high end focus in the digital era and the reaction on the financial crisis in Asia. A short SWOT -analysis, demonstrates the company\u27s biggest challenges at the time. In the end, a conclusion will II \u27 evaluate the findings of the content

    DTNA CCI Project Selection Analyzer

As today’s banks collapse and stress is added to the global economies, it is getting harder for companies to borrow money, therefore it is more important then ever for decision makers to ensure extra capital, resources and durations in projects are minimized. This projects models basic concepts of OR with limited training in linear programming to solve a real world problem. The team worked with a decision maker at Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) to find a way to evaluate a selection of cost reduction projects and using simulation software, Crystal Ball, to analyze the uncertain values used in the model to ensure probability of results

Virtual Teams and Projects: Issues of the 21st Century

    No full text
The relative success or failure of a virtual team depends on many variables. In this paper we survey four key dimensions: overcoming barriers to management, managing team dynamics, creating trust, and leveraging technology to support the team infrastructure. Typical managerial barriers include temporal, geographic, and cross-cultural factors. Dynamic group factors include overcoming a lack of social proximity, creating a framework for establishing trust, and the importance of member autonomy. The dimension of trust encompasses the inherent uncertainty of non-proximal, virtual communications. This uncertainty makes the future behaviors of group members difficult to predict and it impedes group cohesion. Finally, the common thread of information and communication technologies as tools for removing managerial barriers, stimulating group dynamics, and promoting trust are discussed

Management and Engineering Challenges of Converting From 200mm to 300 mm Wafer Processing in the Electronic Microchip Fabrication Industry

    No full text
The largest Engineering Management challenge in the conversion from 200mm to 300mm wafer processing no longer lies within the cleanrooms of the fab plants themselves. Instead, the challenges are in establishing common interface standards between multiple vendors wafer handling, transportation and processing machinery. Especially between the FOUP (Front Opening Unified Pod) and processing machinery. In addition the Engineering Manager must integrate new designs for the buildings, material supply and infrastructure required into an optimum operating model

Multiancestry association study identifies new asthma risk loci that colocalize with immune-cell enhancer marks

    No full text
We examined common variation in asthma risk by conducting a meta-analysis of worldwide asthma genome-wide association studies (23,948 asthma cases, 118,538 controls) of individuals from ethnically diverse populations. We identified five new asthma loci, found two new associations at two known asthma loci, established asthma associations at two loci previously implicated in the comorbidity of asthma plus hay fever, and confirmed nine known loci. Investigation of pleiotropy showed large overlaps in genetic variants with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The enrichment in enhancer marks at asthma risk loci, especially in immune cells, suggested a major role of these loci in the regulation of immunologically related mechanisms
