Educational outcomes in secondary schools in Bologna

    Get PDF
In recent years the analysis of educational outcomes has become increasingly important due mainly to the importance of success at school and the role of the modern school, where students are trained on how to make inroads and work towards planning their lives. In keeping with law no 144/1999, the Province of Bologna local authority collects data on student individuals of compulsory schooling age. This survey represents a complete coverage of the territory. The aim of this study is to use the data on individuals to explain the educational outcomes of these students. We have analysed the data on 5,944 students who were born in 1988 and who attended secondary schools in the province of Bologna in one or more of the five school years from 2002/03 to 2006/07. At first we calculated the success probabilities by gender and institute; later, in order to determine and quantify the influence of students' individual characteristics on final outcomes we estimated five logistic regressions, one for each school year and class attended. Our models confirm the exploratory analysis: variables such as gender, citizenship and the type of school attended do affect educational outcomes.Esiti scolastici, Probabilità di successo, Regressione logistica Educational Outcomes, Success Probabilities, Logistic Regression

Seneca storytelling : Effect of the Kinzua Dam on interpretations of supernatural stories

    Get PDF
Supernatural tales among the Seneca and other Iroquois, or Hodinohsyoni,1 nations have been a critical part of their culture before recorded history and are still enjoyed today. While the specific content and way of telling the stories may have changed over time, the popularity of supernatural themes remains, and many of the stories' characters still feature prominently in both text and storytelling in the community. The building of the Kinzua Dam on the Seneca Allegany Territory in the late 1960s and the subsequent upheaval in the community have deepened the tradition of stories about supernatural incidents. The upheaval has also served as a means through which old stories have gained strength and aided community members removed by the dam's construction in overcoming those tragic events

Factors affecting growth and survival of snowy egret nestlings

    Get PDF
It is widely believed that wading birds in the Everglades have declined as a result of historic water management practices. I determined growth rates for Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) chicks by assessed the nestling body condition through measurement of body weight and skeletal traits. A growth index was calculated as a residual of body weight regressed on age. A body condition index was calculated as the residual of body weight regressed on a skeletal trait (tarsus). Growth was significantly related to water level and hatch date. Survival rates were calculated to day 14, 21, and 50. Survival to 50 days of age was significantly related to hatch date and order. Survival to 21 days of age was significantly related to water level and hatching order. Survival to 14 days of age was marginally related to hatching order. Growth and survival is greatly influenced by water level and hatch date

Measurement of the CP Violating Asymmetry a^s_sl using Bs0-\u3e(Ds-\u3ephi pi) mu nu

The time-integrated measurement of the semileptonic CP violating asymmetry, assl, with data acquired at the Large Hadron Collider with the LHCb experiment is presented. This measurement can help physicists understand some peculiarities in the Standard Model, which is the fundamental framework of knowledge of the universe. Should this asymmetry diverge from zero, new physics may be a main motivator. Using 1 fb-1 of collected data in 2011 with proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the measured value of assl presented is (-0.06 ± 0.50 ± 0.36)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is in very good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of (0.0019±0.0003)%, however divergent from the d0 collaboration measurement of (-1.12 ± 0.74 ± 0.17)%

Cilicia and the Roman Empire: reflections on Provincia Cilicia and its romanisation

    Get PDF
This paper aims at the study of the Roman province of Cilicia, whose formation process was quite long (from the 1st century BC to 72 AD) and complicated by various events. Firstly, it will focus on a more precise determination of the geographic limits of the region, which are not clear and quite ambiguous in the ancient sources. Secondly, the author will thoroughly analyze the formation of the province itself and its progressive Romanization. Finally, political organization of Cilicia within the Roman empire in its different forms throughout time will be taken into account. This paper aims at the study of the Roman province of Cilicia, whose formation process was quite long (from the 1st century BC to 72 AD) and complicated by various events.
