    On the central helium-burning variable stars of the LeoI dwarf spheroidal galaxy

    We present a study of short period, central helium-burning variable stars in the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy LeoI, including 106 RR Lyrae stars and 51 Cepheids. So far, this is the largest sample of Cepheids and the largest Cepheids to RR Lyrae ratio found in such a kind of galaxy. The comparison with other Local Group dwarf spheroidals, Carina and Fornax, shows that the period distribution of RR Lyrae stars is quite similar, suggesting similar properties of the parent populations, whereas the Cepheid period distribution in LeoI peaks at longer periods (P \sim 1.26d instead of ~0.5d) and spans over a broader range, from 0.5 to 1.78d. Evolutionary and pulsation predictions indicate, assuming a mean metallicity peaked within -1.5<= [Fe/H]<=-1.3, that the current sample of LeoI Cepheids traces a unique mix of Anomalous Cepheids (blue extent of the red--clump, partially electron degenerate central helium-burning stars) and short-period classical Cepheids (blue-loop, quiescent central helium-burning stars). Current evolutionary prescriptions also indicate that the transition mass between the two different groups of stars is MHeF \sim 2.1 Mo, and it is constant for stars metal-poorer than [Fe/H]\sim-0.7.     Cepheid Mass-loss and the Pulsation -- Evolutionary Mass Discrepancy

    I investigate the discrepancy between the evolution and pulsation masses for Cepheid variables. A number of recent works have proposed that non-canonical mass-loss can account for the mass discrepancy. This mass-loss would be such that a 5Mo star loses approximately 20% of its mass by arriving at the Cepheid instability strip; a 14Mo star, none. Such findings would pose a serious challenge to our understanding of mass-loss. I revisit these results in light of the Padova stellar evolutionary models and find evolutionary masses are (17±517\pm5)% greater than pulsation masses for Cepheids between 5<M/Mo<14. I find that mild internal mixing in the main-sequence progenitor of the Cepheid are able to account for this mass discrepancy.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, ApJ accepte

    Variable Stars in Local Group Galaxies. I: Tracing the Early Chemical Enrichment and Radial Gradients in the Sculptor dSph with RR Lyrae Stars

    We identified and characterized the largest (536) RR Lyrae (RRL) sample in a Milky Way dSph satellite (Sculptor) based on optical photometry data collected over \sim24 years. The RRLs display a spread in V-magnitude (\sim0.35 mag) which appears larger than photometric errors and the horizontal branch (HB) luminosity evolution of a mono-metallic population. Using several calibrations of two different reddening free and metal independent Period-Wesenheit relations we provide a new distance estimate μ\mu=19.62 mag (σμ\sigma_{\mu}=0.04 mag) that agrees well with literature estimates. We constrained the metallicity distribution of the old population, using the MIM_I Period-Luminosity relation, and we found that it ranges from -2.3 to -1.5 dex. The current estimate is narrower than suggested by low and intermediate spectroscopy of RGBs (Δ\Delta[Fe/H] \le 1.5). We also investigated the HB morphology as a function of the galactocentric distance. The HB in the innermost regions is dominated by red HB stars and by RRLs, consistent with a more metal-rich population, while in the outermost regions it is dominated by blue HB stars and RRLs typical of a metal-poor population. Our results suggest that fast chemical evolution occurred in Sculptor, and that the radial gradients were in place at an early epoch.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS accepte

    El objetivo de este estudio fue examinar en una muestra de 16 mujeres, el efecto los de rasgos de personalidad y la valoración subjetiva ante un estresor social de laboratorio (hablar en público) en la respuesta cardiovascular y electrodérmica. Se midieron las respuestas de conductancia de la piel, la frecuencia cardiaca (FC) y el volumen del pulso periférico (VPP) durante un periodo de descanso, preparación, tarea y recuperación ante un discurso académico. Los sujetos fueron clasificados según sus puntuaciones altas o bajas en el cuestionario de personalidad EPQ, el STAI y en las medidas subjetivas. Los sujetos mostraron un aumento de la activación fisiológica significativo durante las fases de preparación y ejecución del discurso, esta activación estuvo modulada por las variables de personalidad y la valoración subjetiva. Los sujetos más extrovertidos mostraron mayor frecuencia de respuestas electrodérmicas (RED) a lo largo de todo el registro. Los sujetos que percibieron la tarea como más difícil mostraron los valores más altos en frecuencia cardiaca. Por último, aquéllos que percibieron un mayor estrés y esfuerzo mostraron un porcentaje de cambio mayor en volumen de pulso. Estos resultados apoyan el uso de la tarea de hablar en público como un buen estresor de laboratorio y la importancia de la experiencia subjetiva y los rasgos de personalidad del individuo como variables que modulan dicha respuesta

    Weak Galactic Halo--Fornax dSph Connection from RR Lyrae Stars

    For the first time accurate pulsation properties of the ancient variable stars of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) are discussed in the broad context of galaxy formation and evolution. Homogeneous multi-band BVIBVI optical photometry of spanning {\it twenty} years has allowed us to identify and characterize more than 1400 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) in this galaxy. Roughly 70\% are new discoveries. We investigate the period-amplitude distribution and find that Fornax shows a lack of High Amplitude (A_V\gsim0.75 mag) Short Period fundamental-mode RRLs (P\lsim0.48 d, HASPs). These objects occur in stellar populations more metal-rich than [Fe/H]\sim-1.5 and they are common in the Galactic halo (Halo) and in globulars. This evidence suggests that old (age older than 10 Gyr) Fornax stars are relatively metal-poor. A detailed statistical analysis of the role of the present-day Fornax dSph in reproducing the Halo period distribution shows that it can account for only a few to 20\% of the Halo when combined with RRLs in massive dwarf galaxies (Sagittarius dSph, Large Magellanic Cloud). This finding indicates that Fornax-like systems played a minor role in building up the Halo when compared with massive dwarfs. We also discuss the occurrence of HASPs in connection with the luminosity and the early chemical composition of nearby dwarf galaxies. We find that, independently of their individual star formation histories, bright (M_V\lsim-13.5 mag) galaxies have HASPs, whereas faint ones (M_V\gsim-11 mag) do not. Interestingly enough, Fornax belongs to a luminosity range (--11<<MV<_V<--13.5 mag) in which the occurrence of HASPs appears to be correlated with the early star formation and chemical enrichment of the host galaxy.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, A&A, accepte

    On the helium content of Galactic globular clusters via the R parameter

    We estimate the empirical R parameter in 26 Galactic Globular Clusters covering a wide metallicity range, imaged by WFPC2 on board the HST. The improved spatial resolution permits a large fraction of the evolved stars to be measured and permits accurate assessment of radial populaton gradients and completeness corrections. In order to evaluate both the He abundance and the He to metal enrichment ratio, we construct a large set of evolutionary models by adopting similar metallicities and different He contents. We find an absolute He abundance which is lower than that estimated from spectroscopic measurements in HII regions and from primordial nucleosynthesis models. This discrepancy could be removed by adopting a C12O16 nuclear cross section about a factor of two smaller than the canonical value, although also different assumptions for mixing processes can introduce systematical effects. The trend in the R parameter toward solar metallicity is consistent with an upper limit to the He to metal enrichment ratio of the order of 2.5.Comment: accepted for pubblication on Ap

    Astrometry with MCAO: HST-GeMS proper motions in the globular cluster NGC 6681

    Aims: for the first time the astrometric capabilities of the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) facility GeMS with the GSAOI camera on Gemini-South are tested to quantify the accuracy in determining stellar proper motions in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6681. Methods: proper motions from HST/ACS for a sample of its stars are already available, and this allows us to construct a distortion-free reference at the epoch of GeMS observations that is used to measure and correct the temporally changing distortions for each GeMS exposure. In this way, we are able to compare the corrected GeMS images with a first-epoch of HST/ACS images to recover the relative proper motion of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy with respect to NGC 6681. Results: we find this to be (\mu_{\alpha}cos\delta, \mu_{\delta}) = (4.09,-3.41) mas/yr, which matches previous HST/ACS measurements with a very good accuracy of 0.03 mas/yr and with a comparable precision (r.m.s of 0.43 mas/yr). Conclusions: this study successfully demonstrates that high-quality proper motions can be measured for quite large fields of view (85 arcsec X 85 arcsec) with MCAO-assisted, ground-based cameras and provides a first, successful test of the performances of GeMS on multi-epoch data.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures.     Probing the early chemical evolution of the Sculptor dSph with purely old stellar tracers

    We present the metallicity distribution of a sample of 471 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars in the Sculptor dSph, obtained from the II-band Period-Luminosity relation. It is the first time that the early chemical evolution of a dwarf galaxy is characterized in such a detailed and quantitative way, using photometric data alone. We find a broad metallicity distribution (FWHM=0.8 dex) that is peaked at [Fe/H]\simeq-1.90 dex, in excellent agreement with literature values obtained from spectroscopic data. Moreover, we are able to directly trace the metallicity gradient out to a radius of \sim55 arcmin. We find that in the outer regions (r>>\sim32 arcmin) the slope of the metallicity gradient from the RRLs (-0.025 dex arcmin1^{-1}) is comparable to the literature values based on red giant (RG) stars. However, in the central part of Sculptor we do not observe the latter gradients. This suggests that there is a more metal-rich and/or younger population in Sculptor that does not produce RRLs. This scenario is strengthened by the observation of a metal-rich peak in the metallicity distribution of RG stars by other authors, which is not present in the metallicity distribution of the RRLs within the same central area.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures.
