Networks as a case of distributed cognition
Within the development of recent theories of epistemologies, notions of situated, embodied, extended and distributed cognition has been objects of study. Cognition is here seen as instantiated within different relationships, or networks, obtaining among humans and the world. However, what is shared by participating in a network is seldom addressed. This article will analyse and sketch the possibility of understanding a cognitive network, exemplified by a crime scene investigation, involving shared cognition understood as distributive ampliative cognition
On Vagueness:A Wittgensteinian Discussion
I will here use Wittgenstein’s scarce comments on vagueness in Philosophical Grammar as a perspective for discussing Boulanger’s use of the same concept. The aim is presenting a view on the vagueness not presupposing that vague concepts can be treated as determinable in the same way as non-vague concepts, instead vagueness calls for a high degree of context sensitivity and understanding of purposefulness
Frequency Dependent Specific Heat from Thermal Effusion in Spherical Geometry
We present a novel method of measuring the frequency dependent specific heat
at the glass transition applied to 5-polyphenyl-4-ether. The method employs
thermal waves effusing radially out from the surface of a spherical thermistor
that acts as both a heat generator and thermometer. It is a merit of the method
compared to planar effusion methods that the influence of the mechanical
boundary conditions are analytically known. This implies that it is the
longitudinal rather than the isobaric specific heat that is measured. As
another merit the thermal conductivity and specific heat can be found
independently. The method has highest sensitivity at a frequency where the
thermal diffusion length is comparable to the radius of the heat generator.
This limits in practise the frequency range to 2-3 decades. An account of the
3omega-technique used including higher order terms in the temperature
dependency of the thermistor and in the power generated is furthermore given.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, Substantially revised versio
Localized Surface Plasmons in Vibrating Graphene Nanodisks
Localized surface plasmons are confined collective oscillations of electrons
in metallic nanoparticles. When driven by light, the optical response is
dictated by geometrical parameters and the dielectric environment and plasmons
are therefore extremely important for sensing applications. Plasmons in
graphene disks have the additional benefit to be highly tunable via electrical
stimulation. Mechanical vibrations create structural deformations in ways where
the excitation of localized surface plasmons can be strongly modulated. We show
that the spectral shift in such a scenario is determined by a complex interplay
between the symmetry and shape of the modal vibrations and the plasmonic mode
pattern. Tuning confined modes of light in graphene via acoustic excitations,
paves new avenues in shaping the sensitivity of plasmonic detectors, and in the
enhancement of the interaction with optical emitters, such as molecules, for
future nanophotonic devices
The application of industrialised building system in residential project
Industrialised Building System (IBS) is an alternative of construction that can change many aspects in building construction. The Industrialised Building System (IBS) is a construction system that is built using prefabricated
components and is systematically done using machine, formworks and other forms of mechanical equipment. Before this, the construction industry in Malaysia had faced so many problems related to the increasing of using foreign workers, waste of building materials, uncontrolled quality of building materials, unsafe construction site and delay of construction period. This study is done in order to identify the number of Industrialised Building
System (IBS) used in residential project, to analyze the types of Industrialised Building System (IBS) used in residential project, and to analyze the method to
expand the use of Industrialised Building System (IBS) in residential project. The study is done by distributing the questionnaire by postage delivery and conducting an interview. Through detailed reading and distributed
questionnaire, the number of Industrialised Building System used in residential project is identified. To conclude, the Industrialised Building System is still not
widely used in the residential project. Most of the housing companies are using precast-concrete framing, panel and box system in residential project. Based on
the results obtained, to reduce the Industrialised Building System (IBS) component price rate is the most preferable solution to this matter
