Passive hearing protective devices, referred also as ear defenders, work by obstructing noise propagation through the ear canal of the receiver. These gadgets are a popular choice as they offer high attenuation over a broad frequency range, though at times inadequately, especially in the low frequency region, as per International Standards of occupational exposure to noise. Upward masking of speech signal by low frequency noise also degrades the intelligibility of speech in noise that may lead to decrement in performance and hamper the safety of individualsworking in noisy occupational environments. Active noise reducing hearing protective devices lend the possibility of avoiding these problems particularly where the major acoustic energy is centered at low frequencies, rendering these active contraptions a powerful tool in preventing noise induced hearing loss without hampering speech/oralcommunication. Accordingly, the present study was undertaken to investigate the potential of Telex Stratus 30 Headset in providing protection against noise induced hearing loss and to evaluate its efficacy in improving the speech intelligibility of our Armed forces personnel working in different noise spectral environment

Venous Thrombosis could be Gender Specific, Women Beware!

    Get PDF
Venous thrombosis (VT) is the third major cause of mortality in the world after heart attack and stroke. Its two major clinical manifestations are deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) which are serious medical conditions but often remain under-diagnosed. Although rate of occurrence of venous thrombosis in men is slightly higher, a number of studies have pointed out that woman poses higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) compared to men at various stages of life. Risk of VTE increases in women’s life particularly with use of oral contraceptives, during pregnancy and with exogenous administration of hormones like in post-menopausal hormone therapy. Various reports show that these factors increase risk of DVT and PE by several folds. DVT is considered as an important cause of maternal death in western countries. It is often asymptomatic and its signs and symptoms are similar to those of normal pregnancy. The hormonal changes at various stages of life and less physical activity increase the risk of VTE by blood flow stasis. It is extremely important for women to know the stages of life when they are prone to develop VTE, about its prevention and treatment. Detailed studies on differences in clinical manifestations of VTE between men and women are lacking. This review focusses on assessing the increased risk of VTE and its prognosis in women based on available literature

    Get PDF
Seabuckthorn (SBT) is an ecologically and economically important plant species of trans-Himalayan Ladakh. Once considered a thorny menace, SBT is now looked upon as a means for sustainable development of the trans-Himalayan region. Several antioxidant rich SBT-based products are being developed and commercialized. SBT berry collection from natural habitat has become an important activity in the region since the year 2001. Currently, the demand for SBT exceeds the supply capacity of the region. Cultivation of SBT on 2500 ha would result in annual net income of Rs 491 crore. Anticipating the high demand for SBT, studies are underway to meet the long term goal to introduce plantation of SBT on vast barren land. Potential of the lesser-known shrub has been recognized by several R&D organizations. In recent years a number of research institutes in India are working on the lesser known shrub. This article summarizes the advancement of research on SBT of trans-Himalayan Ladakh origin

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PERSONALITY WITH AYURVEDIC PRAKRITI

    Get PDF
Study of personality is one of the most fascinating sciences that attracted many researchers world wide. Personality is a dynamic and organized set of characteristics possessed by a person that uniquely influences his or her cognitions, emotions, motivations, and behaviors in various situations. The study of personality in modern psychology dates back to ancient Greek, when Plato, Aristotle and Hippocrates suggested their theories on personality. Through the centuries, their theories have evolved, changed and have continued to be the base and foundation of modern psychology. As centuries progressed, many philosophers, psychologist and physicians have expanded this field. Personality theories such as type, trait, humanistic, behaviorist, psychoanalytic, cognitive and psychobiologist theories have emerged from ancient times and continue to be present in modern times. Ayurvedic system of medicine is one of the ancient systems of medicine, which recognizes the individuality of an individual by means of Prakriti. Prakriti can be correlated as psycho-somatic constitution, Because Ayurveda believes that human organism behaves in a wholesome and complex manner and physical and mental factors of personality cannot be isolated. Ayurveda gives eloberated description about prakriti in terms of predominance of body humor, nature of sperm and ovum, season and condition of the uterus, food and regimen of mother, composition of Pancamahabhuta and how it getsinfluenced by race/religion, caste/family, habitat, nature of the season, age or stages of life and basic instincts. This way Ayurveda provides a comprehensive, multiphasic and multidimensional theory of personality, which gives a complete picture of an individual. This paper aims to study ayurvedic perspective of personality

    Fatigue behavior of aluminium alloy

    Get PDF
The present project deals with study of fatigue life of Aluminium alloy treated at two different temperatures. This temperature is above and below the recrystallisation temperature of Aluminium alloy. The specimen is commercially available Aluminium alloy which is annealed, tensile testing is done and then fatigue life of the specimen is determined. Failure of the specimen at different stress applied is determined and number of cycles to failure is noted. Fatigue has become progressively more prevalent as technology has developed a greater amount of equipment, such as automobiles, aircraft, compressors, pumps, turbines, etc., subject to repeated loading and vibration. A fatigue failure can usually be recognized from the appearance of the fracture surface, which shows a smooth region, due to the rubbing action. In our experiment we have done the annealing of aluminum alloy above and below recrystallisation temperature in the recovery range. The tensile testing of the specimen was done in INSTRON 1195. The results obtained from this test says that yield strength of the aluminum alloy was found to be more below recrystallisation temperature then that above recrystallisation temperature. The failure of the specimen here occurs at a very large number of cycles. This of the order of 10 5.this number of cycles decreases with an increase in the applied stress. As the load increases the failure of the specimen would occur at a less number of cycles. This alloy used fails at a large number of cycles. Also no endurance limit is obtained here. So for use of this alloy large number of cycles is required and also a lower yield stress. This aluminum alloy can be used for a large number of uses. Aircraft application, gas pipelines, oil tanks, pistons, etc

After the initial outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in China, the disease spreads rapidly across the whole world. It is observed that there is a rampant rise in the rate of infection in spite of best possible precautionary measures taken into consideration against Corona. As there is no scientifically validated full proofed medicine against COVID-19 till date, the only possible way is prevention against this infection by improving self-immunity, mass immunisation and controlling non-communicable diseases, if suffered from. Another possible way from the prevention from this deadly virus is development of herd immunity, but the process takes time and can be fatal for people with higher age groups and with co-morbidities. Yoga, an Indian way of mind-body purification, has been reported to improve functionality of human physiological systems and to prevent diseases. It is also observed that yoga, being a low to moderate intensity physical activity, breathing maneuvers and meditation, can also be performed by any person irrespective of age, with maximum benefit and having less stress in the vital organs during the practice. Therefore, a yoga package for improving immunity and other physical and physiological capacities and mental function to prevent Corona like disease has been formulated on the basis of knowledge from traditional yogic literature and evidence from available research publications on yoga. The yoga package might be beneficial across all age groups for improving health and wellbeing in this pandemic situation
