Towards the elsewhere : Discourses on migration and mobility practices between Morocco and Italy.
peer reviewedThe objective of this article is to analyze the preparation process of young Moroccan migrants directed towards Italy. My focus is on the personal and collective formulation of their desire to leave and on concomitant action taken to realize these aspirations; highlighting the complexity of the imagination, which migration â and expected return â entails.
A second point of attention is the agency exerted by such youth during preparation for departure; even when they have not physically left the country yet. In addition, my observation is focussed on networks emerging as a result of having to deal with state-imposed, migration restrictions, as well as with the politics of humanitarian agencies and NGOs. My discourse argues that these aspiring migrants project themselves into the future and act in accordance with what they long to become. They shape themselves as mobile subjects through a process of self-making to overcome the above-mentioned constraints
Dimensions of Wisdom Perception Across Twelve Countries on Five Continents
Wisdom is the hallmark of social judgment, but how people across cultures recognize wisdom remains unclearâdistinct philosophical traditions suggest different views of wisdomâs cardinal features. We explore perception of wise minds across 16 socio-economically and culturally diverse convenience samples from 12 countries. Participants assessed wisdom exemplars, non-exemplars, and themselves on 19 socio-cognitive characteristics, subsequently rating targetsâ wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Analyses reveal two positively related dimensionsâReflective Orientation and Socio-Emotional Awareness. These dimensions are consistent across cultures and interact when informing wisdom ratings: wisest targetsâas perceived by participantsâscore high on both dimensions, whereas the least wise are not reflective but moderately socio-emotional. Additionally, individuals view themselves as less reflective but more socio-emotionally aware than most wisdom exemplars. Our findings expand folk psychology and social judgment research beyond the Global North, showing how individuals and cultures perceive desirable cognitive and socio-emotional qualities, and contribute to an understanding of mind perception
The primacy of the inner self in decision-making preferences across cultures
We investigated the universality versus cultural specificity of preferences for internal decision-making strategies (intuition or deliberation) over external strategies (advice from friends or crowds). Participants from diverse samples spanning five continents (N=3,517), including Indigenous communities, considered scenarios involving choosing between attractive options or balancing personal and social responsibilities. Most participants in each society preferred and expected to feel better using internal strategies. However, many participants believed their peers would seek out advice, revealing a discrepancy between personal preferences and expected preference of oneâs cultural group. The preference for internal strategies manifested across diverse cultural contexts and scenario types. Nevertheless, substantial sample-level and individual differences emerged, with individualism and need for cognition linked to stronger preference for internal decision-making, and collectivism and outsider view reflective style associated with greater preference for external decision-making. Our findings challenge traditional views of collectivist cultures as predominantly advice-following, inviting a revision of common understanding of cross-cultural differences in social dynamics and behavior
