The article discusses the use of international and domestic laws to capture suspected art thieves as of September 2012. International treaties reportedly impose criminal charges for the theft and trafficking of cultural properties such as works of art. The author argues that foreign nations should look to the U.S. as an example of how to successfully prosecute art thieves and corrupt art dealers under domestic fraud laws

Movement in Math - Integrating Movement-Based Activities into Kindergarten Math

    Get PDF
Gross-motor movements have shown promising effects on student academic achievement and engagement especially in kindergarten classrooms. The purpose of this study was to examine what happens when movement-based mathematical activities are introduced into a kindergarten math curriculum and its implications on how kindergarteners engage during math time. Using surveys, observational and reflective data, and semi-structured interviews of students and my cooperating teacher, this study aimed to examine student and teacher perceptions of incorporating movement-activities. When movement activities were introduced into math time, the students were more engaged in math. The movement activities served as form of play-based learning and relied on thorough planning and preparation. Through the constant-comparative method, I generated 12 level 1 and three level 2 codes from key themes and analyzed descriptive statistics for numerical data from my surveys. This study also strived to understand teachers’ feelings about incorporating movement-based activities into their regular math lessons

The condensation of formaldehyde and methyl acridine.

Very little is known about the acridine ring system. Such compounds as acriflavine, brucine and strychnine are generally believed to contain the acridine ring system. These compounds are all very important drugs. Acriflavine has been used in the treatment of diseases which are due, in whole or in part, to tropanasoma. Strychnine and brucine which may have many and varied uses need not be described here but they are natural plant products. For this reason, acridine derivatives are interesting. Other derivatives of the acridine type should be of some interest. Methylacridine lends itself to reactions readily. Its condensation with formaldehyde will be discussed in the following pages

Learning Community Coordinator Efforts to Address Students with Potential Psychiatric/Psychological Disabilities

    Get PDF
In structuring and providing leadership for learning community programs, learning community coordinators must address myriad issues and situations in order to create an experience that aids student learning and success. All types of students participate in learning communities, including students with psychiatric/psychological disabilities; however, learning community coordinators may not proactively consider ways of addressing the needs of this particular student population. This qualitative study explored the experiences of learning community coordinators working with students with psychiatric/psychological disabilities within the specific context of the learning community and sought to identify successes, challenges, and recommendations for working with these students. Participants highlighted the value of student self-disclosure, the benefits of utilizing peer mentors, colleague challenges, successes they experienced working with students with psychiatric/psychological disabilities, and recommendations for other learning community coordinators

Cultures of success: Recruiting and retaining new live-in residence life professionals

A qualitative inquiry designed to understand entry-level, live-in, professional staff recruitment and retention practices perceived as successful revealed a link to elements of organizational culture. Several important areas of understanding emerged: the actual recruitment and retention practices, the impact of leadership, and the role of organizational culture in the success of the department. This article addresses the impact of culture on the organization and its contribution to success in hiring and retaining entry-level staff. The discussion of findings and practical implications broadens our understanding of culture and better informs practice

Retail food environments have received attention for their influence on dietary behaviors and for their nutrition intervention potential. To improve diet-related behaviors, such as fruit and vegetable (FV) purchasing, it is important to examine its relationship with in-store environmental characteristics. This study used baseline data from the "El Valor de Nuestra Salud" study to examine how in-store environmental characteristics, such as product availability, placement and promotion, were associated with FV purchasing among Hispanic customers in San Diego County. Mixed linear regression models indicated that greater availability of fresh FVs was associated with a 0.36increaseinFVpurchasing(p=0.01).Placementvariables,specificallyeachadditionalsquarefootofdisplayspacededicatedtoFVs(p=0.01)andeachadditionalfreshFVdisplay(p=0.01),wereassociatedwitha0.36 increase in FV purchasing (p = 0.01). Placement variables, specifically each additional square foot of display space dedicated to FVs (p = 0.01) and each additional fresh FV display (p = 0.01), were associated with a 0.02 increase and 0.29decrease,respectively,inFVpurchasing.IntroducingFVpromotionsinthefinalmodelwasnotrelatedtoFVpurchasing.Exploratoryanalysesindicatedthatmenreportedspending0.29 decrease, respectively, in FV purchasing. Introducing FV promotions in the final model was not related to FV purchasing. Exploratory analyses indicated that men reported spending 3.69 fewer dollars on FVs compared to women, controlling for covariates (p = 0.02). These results can help inform interventions targeting in-store environmental characteristics to encourage FV purchasing among Hispanics

Intrauterine Devices in Adolescents: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Background: Adolescent pregnancy is a major public health problem in the United States associated with negative sequelae for women, families, and children. Most of the recent decline in adolescent pregnancy in the United States is due to contraception; however the rate of adolescent pregnancy in the United States is still higher than in other developed nations. Long-acting reversible contraception is underutilized in this respect. Purpose: To review the literature on the outcomes of pregnancy rate, expulsion rate, and continuation rate in adolescent women using an IUD for contraception Data sources: MEDLINE, ISI Web of Science, and POPLINE searches; relevant reference lists Data extraction: 2670 titles and abstracts were reviewed, of which 213 were given full text reviews. 13 studies were included in the final review. Study selection: Studies were given relative weight based on the type of study and their strength of internal and external validity Data synthesis: The data are mixed for all three primary outcomes of the review with a large amount of heterogeneity in types of devices used. More and higher quality studies are needed to determine the effective rates as compared to other contraceptive interventions. Conclusion: The evidence currently available in the literature is currently insufficient to ascertain the appropriateness of IUDs as a first-line contraceptive for adolescents.Master of Public Healt
