UTILITY OF PYROTECHNICS IN BIRD CONTROL
The balanced approach is essential for the proposed application of control methods for birds. The essential ingredients in a balanced approach are knowledge of the environment, both animal, plant and human; reasonable experience in the solution of biological problems; and an awareness of the possible solutions available. After these problems\u27 qualifying ingredients have been met, the control specialist or investigator may apply the tool of choice. In most instances he will have selected alternatives available to himself. In the selection of the tool of choice and alternative methods, the cost of time, labor, materials and equipment, the need or purpose of the control, and the effect upon the public or clientele are all involved. Careful attention to the consideration of all of these factors is essential in providing sufficient alternatives as well as the tool of choice. Safety must be considered as an integral part of the operation and not as a a separate item. Managerial evaluation which does not include safety as an integral part of the control operation invariably violates certain basic rules of safety, sometimes with unpleasant consequences. The tool of choice and secondary or alternative methods and their reasons for their relative priority should be discussed in lay terms with specialists or clientele involved. Final decisions on methods too frequently result in exposing the ignorance of individuals. Therefore, it is essential that the clientele understand the reasoning processes involved in the selection of the method used. Major areas of use for pyrotechnics and non-electronic audio-repellents are difficult to delineate; they generally are: (1) when the need for control is ephe-meral or short-lived; (2) when the labor or equipment costs of alternative methods are high (the material costs are less important); (3) when a bird roost needs to be moved to a location where it may be attacked by better methods; (4) when lethal methods cannot be used for a variety of reasons; (5) where disruption of a business or industrial operation is inconvenient and the fire hazard is low (I am generally not talking of pigeon problems; I\u27m speaking of pyrotechnic use in the case of starlings, blackbirds, or other birds with a high social structure); (6) where other methods, particularly detergents, have proved unsatisfactory in moving birds from a roos
PRICING
I would like to make six points concerning pricing. Number one, there is a great deal of time required in observation. Secondly, there is no such thing as a cheap bird job. Third point: there is no job that is routine. The fourth point: observations are necessary to delineate the species, the type of environment, human interference, the type of job it is going to be, and the needs of that job. The fifth point: bird work cannot be assigned to a person who does not appreciate the need for technical compliance with laws and regulations. Number six: do not price according to rodent control pricing techniques
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring: Is 24 hours necessary?
Background: The variability of blood pressure (BP) makes any single measurement a poor indicator of a patient’s true BP. Multiple studies have confirmed the superiority of ambulatory BP measurements over clinic BP measurements in predicting cardiovascular risk; however, this method presents the problem of patient acceptance as it causes frequent arm discomfort and sleep disturbance. We hypothesized that 6 h of daytime BP measurements would result in slightly higher BP readings, yet reveal similar clinical decision making when compared to24 h of BP measurements.Methods: The source for writing this article was a retrospective analysis of 30 patients who underwent ambulatory BP monitoring. Data obtained included: age, sex, ethnicity, baseline medical problems, medications, laboratory values, reason given for ordering 24-h ambulatory BP measurements, ambulatory BP measurements, and a subsequent decision to change medication.Results: The average BP of the 24-h measurements was 127/75 mm Hg and the average BP of the 6-h daytime measurements was 131/79 mm Hg (SD 15, p = 0.009). Twenty-six out of 30 patients were at goal or pre-hypertensive. Two out of 30 patients had stage 1 hypertension and 2 out of 30 patients had stage 2 hypertension. Thirteen out of 30 patients had nocturnal dipping. Twelve out of 30 patients had a change in medication, but those changes were not associated with the presence or absence of nocturnal dipping (p = 0.5) or other factors beyond mean BP.Conclusions: Although there was a statistically significant, 4 mm Hg systolic difference between 24-h and 6-h average BP readings, there was no evidence that this difference led to changes in clinical management. The presence or absence of nocturnal dipping was not associated with a change in medication. We conclude that 6-h daytime ambulatory BP measurements provide sufficient information to guide clinical decision making without the problems of patient acceptance, arm discomfort, and sleep disturbance associated with 24-h BP measurements
The Miocene mammal Necrolestes demonstrates the survival of a Mesozoic nontherian lineage into the late Cenozoic of South America
The early Miocene mammal Necrolestes patagonensis from Patagonia, Argentina, was described in 1891 as the only known extinct placental "insectivore" from South America (SA). Since then, and despite the discovery of additional well-preserved material, the systematic status of Necrolestes has remained in flux, with earlier studies leaning toward placental affinities and more recent ones endorsing either therian or specifically metatherian relationships. We have further prepared the best-preserved specimens of Necrolestes and compared them with newly discovered nontribosphenic Mesozoic mammals from Argentina; based on this, we conclude that Necrolestes is related neither to marsupials nor placentals but is a late-surviving member of the recently recognized nontherian clade Meridiolestida, which is currently known only from SA. This conclusion is supported by a morphological phylogenetic analysis that includes a broad sampling of therian and nontherian taxa and that places Necrolestes within Meridiolestida. Thus, Necrolestes is a remnant of the highly endemic Mesozoic fauna of nontribosphenic mammals in SA and extends the known record of meridiolestidans by almost 45 million years. Together with other likely relictual mammals from earlier in the Cenozoic of SA and Antarctica, Necrolestes demonstrates the ecological diversity of mammals and the mosaic pattern of fauna replacement in SA during the Cenozoic. In contrast to northern continents, the Cenozoic faunal history of SA was characterized by a long period of interaction between endemic mammalian lineages of Mesozoic origin and metatherian and eutherian lineages that probably dispersed to SA during the latest Cretaceous or earliest Paleocene.Fil: Rougier, Guillermo W.. EXP1 is required for organisation of EXP2 in the intraerythrocytic malaria parasite vacuole
Intraerythrocytic malaria parasites reside within a parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM) that closely overlays the parasite plasma membrane. Although the PVM is the site of several transport activities essential to parasite survival, the basis for organisation of this membrane system is unknown. Here, we performed proximity labeling at the PVM with BioID2, which highlighted a group of single-pass integral membrane proteins that constitute a major component of the PVM proteome but whose function remains unclear. We investigated EXP1, the longest known member of this group, by adapting a CRISPR/Cpf1 genome editing system to install the TetR-DOZI-aptamers system for conditional translational control. Importantly, although EXP1 was required for intraerythrocytic development, a previously reported in vitro glutathione S-transferase activity could not account for this essential EXP1 function in vivo. EXP1 knockdown was accompanied by profound changes in vacuole ultrastructure, including apparent increased separation of the PVM from the parasite plasma membrane and formation of abnormal membrane structures. Furthermore, although activity of the Plasmodium translocon of exported proteins was not impacted by depletion of EXP1, the distribution of the translocon pore-forming protein EXP2 but not the HSP101 unfoldase was substantially altered. Collectively, our results reveal a novel PVM defect that indicates a critical role for EXP1 in maintaining proper organisation of EXP2 within the PVM
Developmental origins of transgenerational sperm histone retention following ancestral exposures
Numerous environmental toxicants have been shown to induce the epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of disease and phenotypic variation. Alterations in the germline epigenome are necessary to transmit transgenerational phenotypes. In previous studies, the pesticide DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) and the agricultural fungicide vinclozolin were shown to promote the transgenerational inheritance of sperm differential DNA methylation regions, non-coding RNAs and histone retention, which are termed epimutations. These epimutations are able to mediate this epigenetic inheritance of disease and phenotypic variation. The current study was designed to investigate the developmental origins of the transgenerational differential histone retention sites (called DHRs) during gametogenesis of the sperm. Vinclozolin and DDT were independently used to promote the epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of these DHRs. Male control lineage, DDT lineage and vinclozolin lineage F3 generation rats were used to isolate round spermatids, caput epididymal spermatozoa, and caudal sperm. The DHRs distinguishing the control versus DDT lineage or vinclozolin lineage samples were determined at these three developmental stages. DHRs and a reproducible core of histone H3 retention sites were observed using an H3 chromatin immunoprecipitation-sequencing (ChIP-Seq) analysis in each of the germ cell populations. The chromosomal locations and genomic features of the DHRs were analyzed. A cascade of epigenetic histone retention site alterations was found to be initiated in the round spermatids and then further modified during epididymal sperm maturation. Observations show that in addition to alterations in sperm DNA methylation and ncRNA expression previously identified, the induction of differential histone retention sites (DHRs) in the later stages of spermatogenesis also occurs. This novel component of epigenetic programming during spermatogenesis can be environmentally altered and transmitted to subsequent generations through epigenetic transgenerational inheritance.•Environmental induction of new transgenerational sperm histone retention sites.•Identification of a developmental cascade of histone retention.•Potential role of novel sperm histone retention in epigenetic inheritance
Asking, Learning, Seeking Out : An Exploration of Data Literacy for Teaching
The current study explored preservice and inservice teachers’ perspectives on data literacy for teaching. Semi-structured interviews were employed with 12 teacher candidates in elementary and special education. The findings revealed participants’ misconceptions regarding formative and summative data; their understanding of the value of formative data; perceptions of challenges related to data literacy for teaching including time, making sense of data, and reliability and validity; and candidates’ preferences for authentic data literacy instruction
CBT for people with intellectual disabilities : emerging evidence, cognitive ability and IQ effects
Historically people with intellectual disabilities have not been offered or received cognitive behavioural interventions that have been shown to be effective for mental health and emotional problems experienced by those without such disabilities. This is despite many people with intellectual disabilities having life experiences that potentially result in them having an increased risk to such problems. This paper discusses whether such therapeutic disdain is justified based on the evidence that is available and emerging concerning the application of cognitive behavioural interventions for this population. Issues concerning access to services, the ability of people with intellectual disabilities to engage in and benefit from the cognitive components of CBT, and the effect of cognitive abilities and IQ level on treatment effectiveness are explored in relation to this question
Hemodialyzer mass transfer-area coefficients for urea increase at high dialysate flow rates
Hemodialyzer mass transfer-area coefficients for urea increase at high dialysate flow rates. The dialyzer mass transfer-area coefficient (KoA) for urea is an important determinant of urea removal during hemodialysis and is considered to be constant for a given dialyzer. We determined urea clearance for 22 different models of commercial hollow fiber dialyzers (N = ~5/model, total N = 107) in vitro at 37°C for three countercurrent blood (Qb) and dialysate (Qd) flow rate combinations. A standard bicarbonate dialysis solution was used in both the blood and dialysate flow pathways, and clearances were calculated from urea concentrations in the input and output flows on both the blood and dialysate sides. Urea KoA values, calculated from the mean of the blood and dialysate side clearances, varied between 520 and 1230ml/min depending on the dialyzer model, but the effect of blood and dialysate flow rate on urea KoA was similar for each. Urea KoA did not change (690 ± 160 vs. 680 ± 140 ml/min, P = NS) when Qb increased from 306 ± 7 to 459 ± 10ml/min at a nominal Qd of 500ml/min. When Qd increased from 504 ± 6 to 819 ± 8ml/min at a nominal Qb of 450ml/min, however, urea KoA increased (P < 0.001) by 14 ± 7% (range 3 to 33%, depending on the dialyzer model) to 780 ± 150ml/min. These data demonstrate that increasing nominal Qd from 500 to 800ml/min alters the mass transfer characteristics of hollow fiber hemodialyzers and results in a larger increase in urea clearance than predicted assuming a constant KoA
