Matériaux isolants: Développement d'un produit expansé à base de cellulose
National audienceInsulation board market is largely dominated by mineral and iol based sources and presente a constant increase. Foamed products are expected to rise in the near future thanks to high performance products. However, the environmental impact is bad. As a consequence, WoTIM European project, funded by WoodWisdomâNet Research Program 2014, aims at developing insulation products based on cellulose obtained from wood. Two products are proposed: expending cellulose foam competing with polyurethane foams to be sprayed and boards of various dimensions. Thanks to highly porous and low density network, insulation performances are high. As an exemple, thermal conductivity as low as 0.035 W/K.m is obtained on under optimization products. During project, economic and environmental performance of products will be evaluated to propose competitive solutions. Partners are VTT in Finland; Holmen and Innventia in Sweden; Soprema and FCBA in France.
Book Review: True West: Authenticity and the American West
In the culture of the American West, the term authenticity comes close to frontier in its ubiquity, resonance, and elusiveness. The fifteen essays in this outstanding collection clarify how authenticity has functioned in cultural and literary settings. Instead of simply distinguishing the fake from the authentic, they explore the nature and consequences of quests for and claims to authenticity. Readers interested in the Great Plains will find rewarding essays on literature, environment, and the uses of American Indian history
Investigations on the vulnerability of advanced CMOS technologies to MGy dose environments
This paper investigates the TID sensitivity of silicon-based technologies at several MGy irradiation doses to evaluate their potential for high TID-hardened circuits. Such circuits will be used in several specific applications suc as safety systems of current or future nuclear power plants considering various radiation environments including normal and accidental operating conditions, high energy physics instruments, fusion experiments or deep space missions. Various device designs implemented in well established bulk silicon and Partially Depleted SOI technologies are studied here up to 3 MGy. Furthermore, new insights are given on the vulnerability of more advanced technologies including planar Fully Depleted SOI and multiple-gate SOI transistors at such high dose. Potential of tested technologies are compared and discussed for stand-alone integrated circuits

Septic cardiomyopathy
Depression of left ventricular (LV) intrinsic contractility is constant in patients with septic shock. Because most parameters of cardiac function are strongly dependent on afterload, especially in this context, the cardiac performance evaluated at the bedside reflects intrinsic contractility, but also the degree of vasoplegia. Recent advances in echocardiography have allowed better characterization of septic cardiomyopathy. It is always reversible providing the patient's recovery. Unlike classic cardiomyopathy, it is not associated with high filling pressures, for two reasons: improvement in LV compliance and associated right ventricular dysfunction. Although, it is unclear to which extent it affects prognosis, a hyperkinetic state is indicative of a profound and persistent vasoplegia associated with a high mortality rate. Preliminary data suggest that the hemodynamic response to a dobutamine challenge has a prognostic value, but large studies are required to establish whether inotropic drugs should be used to treat this septic cardiac dysfunction

TREM-1 expression on neutrophils and monocytes of septic patients: relation to the underlying infection and the implicated pathogen

Abstract

Background

Current knowledge on the exact ligand causing expression of TREM-1 on neutrophils and monocytes is limited. The present study aimed at the role of underlying infection and of the causative pathogen in the expression of TREM-1 in sepsis.

Methods

Peripheral venous blood was sampled from 125 patients with sepsis and 88 with severe sepsis/septic shock. The causative pathogen was isolated in 91 patients. Patients were suffering from acute pyelonephritis, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), intra-abdominal infections (IAIs), primary bacteremia and ventilator-associated pneumonia or hospital-acquired pneumonia (VAP/HAP). Blood monocytes and neutrophils were isolated. Flow cytometry was used to estimate the TREM-1 expression from septic patients.

Results

Within patients bearing intrabdominal infections, expression of TREM-1 was significantly lower on neutrophils and on monocytes at severe sepsis/shock than at sepsis. That was also the case for severe sepsis/shock developed in the field of VAP/HAP. Among patients who suffered infections by Gram-negative community-acquired pathogens or among patients who suffered polymicrobial infections, expression of TREM-1 on monocytes was significantly lower at the stage of severe sepsis/shock than at the stage of sepsis.

Conclusions

Decrease of the expression of TREM-1 on the membrane of monocytes and neutrophils upon transition from sepsis to severe sepsis/septic shock depends on the underlying type of infection and the causative pathogen.</p
