Interactions of accessible solitons with interfaces in anisotropic media: the case of uniaxial nematic liquid crystals

    No full text
We investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, spatial soliton interaction with dielectric interfaces in a strongly anisotropic medium with non-locality, such as nematic liquid crystals. We throw light on the role of refractive index gradients as well as optic axis variations in both voltage- and self-driven angular steering of non-local solitons. We specifically address and then employ in experiments a suitably designed electrode geometry in a liquid crystalline cell in order to define and tune a graded dielectric interface by exploiting the electro-optic response of the material through the in-plane reorientation of the optic axis in two distinct regions. We study both refraction and total internal reflection as well as voltage controlled steering of spatial solitons

Analysis of body differences for the design of children's clothing

This paper discusses anthropometric data obtained through 3D body scanner technology, aiming the dimensioning of Portuguese children's measurements for the design of clothing. The study comprises boys and girls from the Northern Region of Portugal aged between two and ten years old. The main objective of this part of the study was to evaluate the possibility of grouping children with six and seven years old in a same garment size, proposing the same body measurements in the final standard measurements table. In addition to the children's anthropometric measurements, it was checked the body conformation of the children and the possibility of identifying the main biotypes. As a preliminary result, through cluster analysis it was found that it is possible to combine these children in the same group in the proposed standard measurements table.POFC - Programa Operacional Temático Factores de Competitividade(UID/CTM/000264

Can Quantum Gravitational Effects Influence the Entire History of the Universe?

In this work, a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe with dust and a cosmological constant is quantized. By means of a canonical transformation, the classical Hamiltonian is reduced to that of either a harmonic oscillator or anti-oscillator, depending on whether Λ0\Lambda0, respectively. In this way exact solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation can easily be obtained. It turns out that a positive cosmological constant alone may account for an early inflationary regime and a later accelerated expansion phase, with a period of decelerated expansion in between. This suggests that quantum gravitational effects can influence most of the history or even the entire history of the Universe.Comment: To appear in the Physical Review

Ocorrência de um Potyvirus associado ao mosaico da açucena-gigante.

Plants of spider lily (Crinum sp) showing mosaic symptoms were found in Londrina, Paraná. Electron microscopy examinations revealed flexuous rod shaped particles and lamellar inclusion bodies in the cell cytoplasm. RT-PCR products of 2 kb were amplified by a pair of genus specific primers suggesting the association of a potyvirus, being this the first time a virus infection in this host is reported in Brazil

Probing the time dependence of dark energy

A new method to investigate a possible time-dependence of the dark energy equation of state ww is proposed. We apply this methodology to two of the most recent data sets of type Ia supernova (Union2 and SDSS) and the baryon acoustic oscillation peak at z=0.35z = 0.35. For some combinations of these data, we show that there is a clear departure from the standard Λ\LambdaCDM model at intermediary redshifts, although a non-evolving dark energy component (dw/dz=0dw/dz = 0) cannot be ruled out by these data. The approach developed here may be useful to probe a possible evolving dark energy component when applied to upcoming observational data.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, LaTe

Fixed-bed column process as a strategy for separation and purification of Cephamycin C from fermented broth

    Get PDF
Fixed-bed column processes using the anionic resin Q Sepharose XL were evaluated for Cephamycin C (CepC) purification from fermentation broth. Breakthrough and desorption curves were obtained for different flow rates (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 mL/min). The elution method consisted of a stepwise gradient using NaCl solutions (0.1, 0.3 and 0.5%), which resulted in the separation of CepC from others antibiotics. The flow rate did not interfere on adsorption during loading of the column, but band broadening was observed during elution as the flow rate increased. After the ion exchange process, the fractions containing CepC were submitted to solid phase extraction using a C18 cartridge to remove salts. Analyses of the broth used to feed the column and of the salt-free fractions by LC-MS showed a reduction in the concentration of some contaminants (possibly penicillin N, deacetylcephalosporin C, and deacetoxycephalosporin C) compared to the concentration of CepC. In conclusion, ion exchange process followed by adsorption on a C18 adsorbent was demonstrated to be a selective and efficient procedure to purify CepC from fermentation broth. The authors acknowledge CAPES, CNPq, and FAPESP for the financial support
