3DTouch: A wearable 3D input device with an optical sensor and a 9-DOF inertial measurement unit

We present 3DTouch, a novel 3D wearable input device worn on the fingertip for 3D manipulation tasks. 3DTouch is designed to fill the missing gap of a 3D input device that is self-contained, mobile, and universally working across various 3D platforms. This paper presents a low-cost solution to designing and implementing such a device. Our approach relies on relative positioning technique using an optical laser sensor and a 9-DOF inertial measurement unit. 3DTouch is self-contained, and designed to universally work on various 3D platforms. The device employs touch input for the benefits of passive haptic feedback, and movement stability. On the other hand, with touch interaction, 3DTouch is conceptually less fatiguing to use over many hours than 3D spatial input devices. We propose a set of 3D interaction techniques including selection, translation, and rotation using 3DTouch. An evaluation also demonstrates the device's tracking accuracy of 1.10 mm and 2.33 degrees for subtle touch interaction in 3D space. Modular solutions like 3DTouch opens up a whole new design space for interaction techniques to further develop on.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

Thoracic Radionecrosis Following Repeated Cardiac Catheterization

Radiodermatitis is a known complication in patients having undergone radiotherapy. It usually appears 2 to 5 years after irradiation. We are reporting on a case of radiodermatitis that occurred within months after coronary dilatation and stenting. It started with painful swelling, followed by a typical appearance on the skin surface. Histological finding confirmed the diagnosis. However, magnetic resonance imaging showed changes in the subcutaneous tissue extending into the ribs. A radical debridement was performed including removal of a partially necrotic 4th rib. The defect was closed with a latissimus dorsi transposition flap. Our findings are compared with the literature reports

The Role of Platelets in Allergic Inflammation and Asthma

    Get PDF
Platelets are a kind of blood cells derived from bone marrow megakaryocytes and play essential roles in thrombosis, hemostasis, and tissue repair. Platelets have been found to be crucially involved in various immune responses and actively involved in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases such as allergic asthma. Patients with allergic asthma have lower platelet counts and increased levels of markers of platelet activation after allergen exposure. Platelets have been found extravascularly in the airways, and platelet products have been measured in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid of asthmatic patients. Platelets are also crucially involved in the development of allergic diseases, including the development of allergic asthma via the regulation of allergic inflammation, especially type 2 inflammation mediated by active platelet-derived IL-33 protein activation. Both platelets and IL-33 are activated by tissue damage and involved in biological defense mechanisms and initiation of tissue repair. Therefore, platelets may be involved in the development of steroid-refractory asthma, including irreversible airway remodeling phenotypes

Effect of data scaling on color device model fitting

    Get PDF
Output devices in print production can be characterized by different characterization methods. One commonly used method of color device characterization is least squares fitting. In essence, the least squares fitting is used to determine the coefficients of a predetermined polynomial, such that the sum of squared differences between the values predicted by the model and the empirical data is minimal. The choice of the polynomial order and the cross product terms which best describe the behavior of a certain device is not obvious. This paper is a part of a larger study which investigates the criteria in the measurement data which can be used for optimal model selection. The part of the study covered in this paper addresses the data over fitting problem. It is investigated by comparing the performance of models of different polynomial orders on two different domains.Peer Reviewe

Zasnivanje novovekovne metafizike u stavu cogito ergo sum

The author aims to show how the foundation of modern metaphysics took place. In order to achieve that, it will be crucial to understand the meaning of the first principle, which carries the entire metaphysical construction. The principle in question will be formulated as cogito ergo sum. It will be necessary to master the framework in which the principle appears because we are trying to talk about a complete project that has its meaning only in its entirety. In addition to the framework, the method that appears to be appropriate for metaphysics is also important - methodic doubt. Only through that method, we are able to reach an absolute position that should ensure everything else, because that method is radical enough. Finally, the meaning of the principle will be presented in its metaphysical sense. This will be emphasized all the time, but in the end, it will be briefly accentuated. Thus, we want to show the foundation of a new metaphysics, which should be founding everything else, including scientific knowledge

Body Contouring Surgery Following Bariatric Surgery and Dietetically Induced Massive Weight Reduction: A Risk Analysis

    Get PDF
Background: This study analyzed the impact of weight reduction method, preoperative, and intraoperative variables on the outcome of reconstructive body contouring surgery following massive weight reduction. Methods: All patients presenting with a maximal BMI ≥35kg/m2 before weight reduction who underwent body contouring surgery of the trunk following massive weight loss (excess body mass index loss (EBMIL) ≥ 30%) between January 2002 and June 2007 were retrospectively analyzed. Incomplete records or follow-up led to exclusion. Statistical analysis focused on weight reduction method and pre-, intra-, and postoperative risk factors. The outcome was compared to current literature results. Results: A total of 104 patients were included (87 female and 17 male; mean age 47.9years). Massive weight reduction was achieved through bariatric surgery in 62 patients (59.6%) and dietetically in 42 patients (40.4%). Dietetically achieved excess body mass index loss (EBMIL) was 94.20% and in this cohort higher than surgically induced reduction EBMIL 80.80% (p < 0.01). Bariatric surgery did not present increased risks for complications for the secondary body contouring procedures. The observed complications (26.9%) were analyzed for risk factors. Total tissue resection weight was a significant risk factor (p < 0.05). Preoperative BMI had an impact on infections (p < 0.05). No impact on the postoperative outcome was detected in EBMIL, maximal BMI, smoking, hemoglobin, blood loss, body contouring technique or operation time. Corrective procedures were performed in 11 patients (10.6%). The results were compared to recent data. Conclusion: Bariatric surgery does not increase risks for complications in subsequent body contouring procedures when compared to massive dietetic weight reductio
