    Flow Structure Detection with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

    We discuss how existing flow structure detection methods can be realised in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamcs (SPH) simulations. We demonstrate the use of the Delta criterion for the detection of instantaneous Eulerian flow structures. The standard calculation of the velocity gradient tensor (VGT) results too noisy gradient field. We propose a correction method based on the idea of XSPH that yields a much smoother VGT field, enabling significantly more accurate structure detection. We also demonstrate on test cases the process in which the instantaneous Eulerian tools are used to locate Lagrangian coherent flow structures

    ANALYSIS OF THE CHLORIDE BINDING ABILITY OF CEMENTS

    We examined the binding process of NaCI penetrating into hardened cements from outer source through Hungarian manufactured cements representing both general and special fields of application. These types are the following: 450 Rpc, S 54, 350 ppc 20 and 250 kspc 60. We observed the effect of chlorides entering cements (between 1-28 and 28-56 days) by thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction analysis proved that the chloride ion of NaCI is bound by C₃A and C₄AF in the form C₃A· CaCl₂ · H₁₀ containing ferrite. Chloro-aluminate-hydrates were formed not only in the first phase of hydration but in the hardened cement as well by the substitution of anions of the present AFm phases: C₃A· CaS0₄· H₁₂,, C₃A· Ca(OH)₂ . H₁₂, C₃A· CaC0₃· H₁₁. Neither X-ray diffraction nor thermal analysis investigations detected any chlorous calcium-silicate-hydrates

    Large-N limit of a magnetic impurity in unconventional density waves

    We investigate the effect of unconventional density wave (UDW) condensate on an Anderson impurity using large-N technique at T=0. In accordance with previous treatments of a Kondo impurity in pseudogap phases, we find that Kondo effect occurs only in a certain range of parameters. The f-electron density of states reflects the influence of UDW at low energies and around the maximum of the density wave gap. The static spin susceptibility diverges at the critical coupling, indicating the transition from strong to weak coupling. In the dynamic spin susceptibility an additional peak appears showing the presence the UDW gap. Predictions concerning non-linear density of states are made. Our results apply to other unconventional condensates such as d-wave superconductors and d-density waves as well.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    The mutualistic fungus Piriformospora indica protects barley roots from a loss of antioxidant capacity caused by the necrotrophic pathogen Fusarium culmorum

    Fusarium culmorum causes root rot in barley (Hordeum vulgare), resulting in severely reduced plant growth and yield. Pretreatment of roots with chlamydospores of the mutualistic root-colonizing basidiomycete Piriformospora indica (Agaricomycotina) prevented necrotization of root tissues and plant growth retardation commonly associated with Fusarium root rot. Quantification of Fusarium infections with a real-time PCR assay revealed a correlation between root rot symptoms and the relative amount of fungal DNA. Fusarium-infected roots showed reduced levels of ascorbate and glutathione (GSH), along with reduced activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), and monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR). Consistent with this, Fusarium-infected roots showed elevated levels of lipid hydroperoxides and decreased ratios of reduced to oxidized forms of ascorbate and glutathione. In clear contrast, roots treated with P. indica prior to inoculation with F. culmorum showed levels of ascorbate and GSH that were similar to controls. Likewise, lipid peroxidation and the overall reduction in antioxidant enzyme activities were largely attenuated by P. indica in roots challenged by F. culmorum. These results suggest that P. indica protects roots from necrotrophic pathogens at least partly, through activating the plant’s antioxidant capacity

    Gapped optical excitations from gapless phases: imperfect nesting in unconventional density waves

    We consider the effect of imperfect nesting in quasi-one-dimensional unconventional density waves in the case, when the imperfect nesting and the gap depends on the same wavevector component. The phase diagram is very similar to that in a conventional density wave. The density of states is highly asymmetric with respect to the Fermi energy. The optical conductivity at T=0 remains unchanged for small deviations from perfect nesting. For higher imperfect nesting parameter, an optical gap opens, and considerable amount of spectral weight is transferred to higher frequencies. This makes the optical response of our system very similar to that of a conventional density wave. Qualitatively similar results are expected in d-density waves.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Order of current variance and diffusivity in the rate one totally asymmetric zero range process

    We prove that the variance of the current across a characteristic is of order t^{2/3} in a stationary constant rate totally asymmetric zero range process, and that the diffusivity has order t^{1/3}. This is a step towards proving universality of this scaling behavior in the class of one-dimensional interacting systems with one conserved quantity and concave hydrodynamic flux. The proof proceeds via couplings to show the corresponding moment bounds for a second class particle. We build on the methods developed by Balazs-Seppalainen for asymmetric simple exclusion. However, some modifications were needed to handle the larger state space. Our results translate into t^{2/3}-order of variance of the tagged particle on the characteristics of totally asymmetric simple exclusion.Comment: 23 pages; some minor typos correcte

    The technical developments leading to revolution in clinical genetic testing offer new approaches for patients with cancer. From one mutation or one gene approach the scale of genetic testing moved to whole exome or whole genome scale. It is well known that many tumours are genetically determined ans they are part of familial tumour syndromes. In addition, some mutations indicate specific molecular targeted therapies. Although sampling and sample preparation are different for testing germline and somatic mutations, the technical background of the analysis is the same. The aim of clinical genetic testing is to identify patients who are carriers of disease-causing mutations or to test tumour tissue for the presence of genetic alterations which may be targets for therapeutic approaches. In this review the authors summarize novel possibilities offered by next-generation sequencing in clinical genetic testing of patients with endocrine tumours.     Cannabidiol exerts sebostatic and antiinflammatory effects on human sebocytes.

    The endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates multiple physiological processes, including cutaneous cell growth and differentiation. Here, we explored the effects of the major nonpsychotropic phytocannabinoid of Cannabis sativa, (-)-cannabidiol (CBD), on human sebaceous gland function and determined that CBD behaves as a highly effective sebostatic agent. Administration of CBD to cultured human sebocytes and human skin organ culture inhibited the lipogenic actions of various compounds, including arachidonic acid and a combination of linoleic acid and testosterone, and suppressed sebocyte proliferation via the activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid-4 (TRPV4) ion channels. Activation of TRPV4 interfered with the prolipogenic ERK1/2 MAPK pathway and resulted in the downregulation of nuclear receptor interacting protein-1 (NRIP1), which influences glucose and lipid metabolism, thereby inhibiting sebocyte lipogenesis. CBD also exerted complex antiinflammatory actions that were coupled to A2a adenosine receptor-dependent upregulation of tribbles homolog 3 (TRIB3) and inhibition of the NF-kappaB signaling. Collectively, our findings suggest that, due to the combined lipostatic, antiproliferative, and antiinflammatory effects, CBD has potential as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of acne vulgaris
