    Dependence of the Electroluminescence on the Spacer Layer Growth Temperature of Multilayer Quantum-Dot Laser Structures

    Electroluminescence (EL) measurements have been performed on a set of In(Ga)As-GaAs quantum-dot (QD) structures with varying spacer layer growth temperature. At room temperature and low injection current, a superlinear dependence of the integrated EL intensity (IEL) on the injection current is observed. This superlinearity decreases as the spacer layer growth temperature increases and is attributed to a reduction in the amount of nonradiative recombination. Temperature-dependent IEL measurements show a reduction of the IEL with increasing temperature. Two thermally activated quenching processes, with activation energies of ˜ 157 meV and ˜ 320 meV, are deduced and these are attributed to the loss of electrons and holes from the QD ground state to the GaAs barriers. Our results demonstrate that growing the GaAs barriers at higher temperatures improves their quality, thereby increasing the radiative efficiency of the QD emission

    Near Their Thresholds for Detection, Shapes Are Discriminated by the Angular Separation of Their Corners

    Observers make sense of scenes by parsing images on the retina into meaningful objects. This ability is retained for line drawings, demonstrating that critical information is concentrated at object boundaries. Information theoretic studies argue for further concentration at points of maximum curvature, or corners, on such boundaries [1]-[3] suggesting that the relative positions of such corners might be important in defining shape. In this study we use patterns subtly deformed from circular, by a sinusoidal modulation of radius, in order to measure threshold sensitivity to shape change. By examining the ability of observers to discriminate between patterns of different frequency and/or number of cycles of modulation in a 2x2 forced choice task we were able to show, psychophysically, that difference in a single cue, the periodicity of the corners (specifically the polar angle between two points of maximum curvature) was sufficient to allow discrimination of two patterns near their thresholds for detection. We conclude that patterns could be considered as labelled for this measure.     Magneto-optical study of thermally annealed InAs-InGaAs-GaAs self-assembled quantum dots

    We report a magneto-optical study of InAs-InGaAs-GaAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) subjected to post-growth thermal annealing at different temperatures. At low temperatures annealing strongly affects the bimodal distribution of QDs; at higher temperatures a strong blueshift of the emission occurs. Magnetophotoluminescence reveals that the annealing increases the QD size, with a larger effect occurring along the growth axis, and decreases the carrier effective masses. The main contribution to the blueshift is deduced to be an increase in the average Ga composition of the QDs. The inadvertent annealing which occurs during the growth of the upper AlGaAs cladding layer in laser structures is also studied

    Integrating Evolutionary, Cultural, and Computational Psychiatry: A Multilevel Systemic Approach

    This paper proposes an integrative perspective on evolutionary, cultural and computational approaches to psychiatry. These three approaches attempt to frame mental disorders as multiscale entities and offer modes of explanations and modeling strategies that can inform clinical practice. Although each of these perspectives involves systemic thinking, each is limited in its ability to address the complex developmental trajectories and larger social systemic interactions that lead to mental disorders. Inspired by computational modeling in theoretical biology, this paper aims to integrate the modes of explanation offered by evolutionary, cultural and computational psychiatry in a multilevel systemic perspective. We apply the resulting Evolutionary, Cultural and Computational (ECC) model to Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) to illustrate how this integrative approach can guide research and practice in psychiatry

    Poorer Integration of Local Orientation Information Occurs in Students With High Schizotypal Personality Traits

    Contour integration is impaired in schizophrenia patients, even at the first episode, but little is known about visual integration abilities prior to illness onset. To examine this issue, we compared undergraduate students high and low in schizotypal personality traits, reflecting putative liability to psychosis, on two psychophysical tasks assessing local and global stages of the integration process. The Radial Frequency Jittered Orientation Tolerance (RFJOT) task measures tolerance to orientation noise at the local signal level, when judging global stimulus orientation, whilst the Radial Frequency Integration Task (RFIT) measures the ability to globally integrate the local signals that have been extracted during shape discrimination. Positive schizotypy was assessed with the Perceptual Aberration (PAb) scale from the Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales-Brief. On the RFJOT task, the High PAb group (n = 55) tolerated statistically significantly less noise (d = −0.494) and had a lower proportion of correct responses (d = −0.461) than the Low PAb group (n = 77). For the RFIT there was no statistically significant difference in integration abilities between the High and Low PAb groups. High and Low PAb groups also differed on other positive and disorganized (but not negative) schizotypy traits, hence poorer performance on the RFJOT may not be solely related to unusual perceptual experiences. These findings suggest that difficulties with local noise tolerance but not global integration occur in healthy young adults with high levels of schizotypal personality traits, and may be worth investigating as a marker of risk for schizophrenia
