    The Impact of International Outsourcing on Labour Market Dynamics in Germany

    Using an administrative data set containing daily information on individual workers’ employment histories, we investigate how workers’ labour market transitions are affected by international outsourcing. In order to do so,we estimate hazard rate models for match separations, as well as for worker flows from employment to another job, to unemployment, and to nonparticipation. Outsourcing is found to have no significant impact on overall job stability in the manufacturing sector, but it is associated with increased job stability in the service sector. Furthermore, the effect of outsourcing varies strongly across skill levels and age groups.This is especially the case in the manufacturing sector, where the hazard of transiting to nonemployment rises with international outsourcing for medium-skilled and older workers.Job stability, labour market transitions; worker flows, outsourcing,duration analysis

    Truth in art and law: Allocating the risks associated with attribution in the art auction house

    This thesis explores the interaction of law with art auction house practices in the area of authentication and attribution. A key issue which is addressed is whether the understanding of authorship which the contemporary art market has adopted is in conflict with the creative processes of artists, both past and present. It is considered whether any such conflict may generate uncertainty, providing a fertile ground for disputes relating to attribution. On the basis of this, an analysis of the complex relationship between the auctioneer and buyer at auction under the current law is made. In particular, the duties and liabilities the art auctioneer owes to the purchaser with regard to the description of lots made in the course of an auction are explored. In an attempt to find the fairest and most cost-efficient solution to the art world’s misattribution problem, a move from caveat emptor to caveat auctionator is discussed

    Comparison of methods for sampling particulate emissions from tires under different test environments

    Traffic-related emissions are strongly criticised by the public because they contribute to climate change and are classified as hazardous to health. Combustion engine emissions have been regulated by limit values for almost three decades. There is currently no legal limit for non-exhaust emissions, which include tire wear particle emissions and resuspension. As a result, the percentage of total vehicle emissions has risen continuously. Some of the particles emitted can be assigned to the size classes of particulate matter (≤10 µm) and are therefore of particular relevance to human health. The literature describes a wide range of concepts for sampling and measuring tire wear particle emissions. Because of the limited number of studies, the mechanisms involved in on-road tests and their influence on the particle formation process, particle transport and the measuring ability can only be described incompletely. The aim of this study is to compare test bench and on-road tests and to assess the influence of selected parameters. The first part describes the processes of particle injection and particle distribution. Based on this, novel concepts for sampling and measurement in the laboratory and in the field are presented. The functionality and the mechanisms acting in each test environment are evaluated on the basis of selected test scenarios. For example, emissions from external sources, the condition of the road surface and the influence of the driver are identified as influencing factors. These analyzes are used to illustrate the complexity and limited reproducibility of on-road measurements, which must be taken into account for future regulations

    Analysis of TRWP particle distribution in urban and suburban landscapes, connecting real road measurements with particle distribution simulation

    This article deals with methods and measurements related to environmental pollution and analysis of particle distribution in urban and suburban landscapes. Therefore, an already-invented sampling method for tyre road wear particles (TRWP) was used to capture online emission factors from the road. The collected particles were analysed according to their size distribution, for use as an input for particle distribution simulations. The simulation model was a main traffic intersection, because of the high vehicle dynamic related to the high density of start–stop manoeuvres. To compare the simulation results (particle mass (PM) and particle number (PN)) with real-world emissions, measuring points were defined and analysed over a measuring time of 8 h during the day. Afterwards, the collected particles were analysed in terms of particle shape, appearance and chemical composition, to identify the distribution and their place of origin. As a result of the investigation, the appearance of the particles showed a good correlation to the vehicle dynamics, even though there were a lot of background influences, e.g., resuspension of dust. Air humidity also showed a great influence on the recorded particle measurements. In areas of high vehicle dynamics, such as heavy braking or accelerating, more tyre and brake particles could be found

    Annexin A1 exerts renoprotective effects in experimental crescentic glomerulonephritis

    Non-resolving inflammation plays a critical role during the transition from renal injury towards end-stage renal disease. The glucocorticoid-inducible protein annexin A1 has been shown to function as key regulator in the resolution phase of inflammation, but its role in immune-mediated crescentic glomerulonephritis has not been studied so far. Methods: Acute crescentic glomerulonephritis was induced in annexin A1-deficient and wildtype mice using a sheep serum against rat glomerular basement membrane constituents. Animals were sacrificed at d5 and d10 after nephritis induction. Renal leukocyte abundance was studied by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. Alterations in gene expression were determined by RNA-Seq and gene ontology analysis. Renal levels of eicosanoids and related lipid products were measured using lipid mass spectrometry. Results: Histological analysis revealed an increased number of sclerotic glomeruli and aggravated tubulointerstitial damage in the kidneys of annexin A1-deficient mice compared to the wildtype controls. Flow cytometry analysis confirmed an increased number of CD45 + leukocytes and neutrophil granulocytes in the absence of annexin A1. Lipid mass spectrometry showed elevated levels of prostaglandins PGE2 and PGD2 and reduced levels of antiinflammatory epoxydocosapentaenoic acid regioisomers. RNA-Seq with subsequent gene ontology analysis revealed induction of gene products related to leukocyte activation and chemotaxis as well as regulation of cytokine production and secretion. Conclusion: Intrinsic annexin A1 reduces proinflammatory signals and infiltration of neutrophil granulocytes and thereby protects the kidney during crescentic glomerulonephritis. The annexin A1 signaling cascade may therefore provide novel targets for the treatment of inflammatory kidney disease

    Broadband Setup for Magnetic-Field-Induced Domain Wall Motion in Cylindrical Nanowires

    In order to improve the precision of domain wall dynamics measurements, we develop a coplanar waveguide-based setup where the domain wall motion should be triggered by pulses of magnetic field. The latter are produced by the Oersted field of the waveguide as a current pulse travels toward its termination, where it is dissipated. Our objective is to eliminate a source of bias in domain wall speed estimation while optimizing the field amplitude.
