    Design e arquitetura escolares : currículo oculto

    A educação, enquanto conceito e condição fundamentais à transformação do homem nas suas múlplas dimensões, encontra nos seus recursos e contextos de referência um universo potencial que, projetando a escola para além da sua vocação meramente academizante, a legitima enquanto entidade promotora de uma pedagogia cultural. O design e a arquitetura, enquanto áreas concomitantes da própria realidade escolar, vêm afirmando novas formas de expressão estética e funcional e inaugurando novas perspetivas didáticas decorrentes da fusão entre utilizador, contexto e objeto - aspetos essenciais à redefinição do gosto e ao dever de parcipação cívica do indivíduo no quadro da (re)invenção e humanização dos espaços e objetos de usufruição comuns. No pressuposto das ideias expressas, vimos situar factos e refletir sobre a possibilidade da escola se declarar como centro de conhecimento, cultura e lazer com preocupações ecológicas, estéticas e cívicas, e na qual o design e a arquitetura se afirmem como currículo oculto – participando assim nesse desígnio integrador de ensinar, educar e formar.ABSTRACT: Education, as a fundamental concept and state for the transformation of man in its multiple dimensions, finds a potential universe in its resources and contexts of reference that, projecting the school besides its role merely academic, legimate the education as a promoter entity of a cultural pedagogy.     Cryopreservation of Byrsonima intermedia embryos followed by room temperature thawing

    Byrsonima intermedia is a shrub from the Brazilian Cerrado with medicinal properties. The storage of biological material at ultra-low temperatures (-196°C) is termed cryopreservation and represents a promising technique for preserving plant diversity. Thawing is a crucial step that follows cryopreservation. The aim of this work was to cryopreserve B. intermedia zygotic embryos and subsequently thaw them at room temperature in a solution rich in sucrose. The embryos were decontaminated and desiccated in a laminar airflow hood for 0-4 hours prior to plunging into liquid nitrogen. The embryo moisture content (% MC) during dehydration was assessed. Cryopreserved embryos were thawed in a solution rich in sucrose at room temperature, inoculated in a germination medium and maintained in a growth chamber. After 30 days, the embryo germination was evaluated. No significant differences were observed between the different embryo dehydration times, where they were dehydrated for at least one hour. Embryos with a MC between 34.3 and 20.3% were germinated after cryopreservation. In the absence of dehydration, all embryos died following cryopreservation. We conclude that B. intermedia zygotic embryos can be successfully cryopreserved and thawed at room temperature after at least one hour of dehydration in a laminar airflow bench

    Tuning in magnetic modes in Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C: from longitudinal spin-density waves to simple ferromagnetism

    Neutron diffraction and thermodynamics techniques were used to probe the evolution of the magnetic properties of Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C. A succession of magnetic modes was observed as x is varied: the longitudinal modulated k=(0.55,0,0) state at x=0 is transformed into a collinear k=([nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{2},0,[nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{2}) antiferromagnetic state at x= 0.2, 0.4; then into a transverse c-axis modulated k=(0,0,[nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{3}) mode at x= 0.6, and finally into a simple ferromagnetic structure at x= 0.8 and 1. Concomitantly, the low-temperature orthorhombic distortion of the tetragonal unit cell at x=0 is reduced smoothly such that for x >= 0.4 only a tetragonal unit cell is manifested. Though predicted theoretically earlier, this is the first observation of the k=(0,0,[nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{3}) mode in borocarbides; our findings of a succession of magnetic modes upon increasing x also find support from a recently proposed theoretical model. The implication of these findings and their interpretation on the magnetic structure of the RM_{2}B_{2}C series are also discussed

    The Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution in five-dimensional general relativity briefly revisited

    We briefly revisit the Schwarzschild-de Sitter solution in the context of five-dimensional general relativity. We obtain a class of five-dimensional solutions of Einstein vacuum field equations into which the four-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter space can be locally and isometrically embedded. We show that this class of solutions is well-behaved in the limit of lambda approaching zero. Applying the same procedure to the de Sitter cosmological model in five dimensions we obtain a class of embedding spaces which are similarly well-behaved in this limit. These examples demonstrate that the presence of a non-zero cosmological constant does not in general impose a rigid relation between the (3+1) and (4+1)-dimensional spacetimes, with degenerate limiting behaviour.Comment: 7 page

    Disordered two-dimensional superconductors: roles of temperature and interaction strength

    We have considered the half-filled disordered attractive Hubbard model on a square lattice, in which the on-site attraction is switched off on a fraction ff of sites, while keeping a finite UU on the remaining ones. Through Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations for several values of ff and UU, and for system sizes ranging from 8×88\times 8 to 16×1616\times 16, we have calculated the configurational averages of the equal-time pair structure factor PsP_s, and, for a more restricted set of variables, the helicity modulus, ρs\rho_s, as functions of temperature. Two finite-size scaling {\it ansatze} for PsP_s have been used, one for zero-temperature and the other for finite temperatures. We have found that the system sustains superconductivity in the ground state up to a critical impurity concentration, fcf_c, which increases with UU, at least up to U=4 (in units of the hopping energy). Also, the normalized zero-temperature gap as a function of ff shows a maximum near f0.07f\sim 0.07, for 2U62\lesssim U\lesssim 6. Analyses of the helicity modulus and of the pair structure factor led to the determination of the critical temperature as a function of ff, for U=3,U=3, 4 and 6: they also show maxima near f0.07f\sim 0.07, with the highest TcT_c increasing with UU in this range. We argue that, overall, the observed behavior results from both the breakdown of CDW-superconductivity degeneracy and the fact that free sites tend to "push" electrons towards attractive sites, the latter effect being more drastic at weak couplings.Comment: 9 two-column pages, 14 figures, RevTe

    Antimicrobial composite wound dressing

    Nowadays, a wound dressing is no longer a passive material, it must interact with the wound and improve the healing process. In fact, the actual requirements for a wound dressing are quite challenging. To achieve these demanding goal, wound dressing’ research have been focus on the development of composites that combine the best of two or more polymeric materials. Thus, our group developed a composite material of cotton functionalized with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose / cyclodextrins hydrogel to be used as antimicrobial wound dressing. Hydrogel polymer will improve the wearability and the drug delivery capacity of cotton textiles. And cotton will enhance the mechanical properties of hydrogel, facilitating the handle process. The composite synthesis was performed by one-step chemical crosslinking. The reaction parameters, such as crosslinker concentration and polymeric solution concentration, were optimized. The obtained composites were characterized base on their physicochemical and biological properties. To the best of our knowledge, loading and release of gallic acid (as antibacterial agent) into composites wound dressings, and its release for control wound infections, have not been evaluated until now. The developed composites have the combined properties of cotton and hydrogel. The gallic acid was successfully loaded into the polymeric network, and it release was sustained for 48 h. The loaded composites can destroy bacterial cells preserving the gallic acid antibacterial activity.
